This week Ms.Gleeson has sent a Kahoot survey for parents to complete in lieu of one day’s work. The link is included in a text sent to parents.

Literacy:-Rhyme of the week: ‘My Parents sent me to the store’ by Kenn Nesbitt

My parents sent me to the storeto buy a loaf of bread.

I came home with a puppyand a parakeet instead.

I came home with a guinea pig,a hamster and a cat,a turtle and a lizard

and a friendly little rat.

I also had a monkeyand a mongoose and a mouse.

Those animals went crazywhen I brought them in the house.

They barked and yelped and hissedand chased my family out the door.

My parents never let medo the shopping anymore.

Note: Exposing your child to real coins is the best way to teach him/her. There is nothing better than hands on experience. Explore the coins and describe them.Game 1: Spot the coins hidden in the various roomshttps://ulsterbankroi.mymoneysense.com/students/students-5-8/spot-the-coins/ (Beginners level is simply finding the coins and advanced is placing coins in order of value)

Game 2: Sorting coins Collect as many 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 cent coins as you can. Place them in a pile in the centre of the table. Give your child five boxes/cups/plastic cups, bags, etc. Write the amounts 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c on Post-it notes and place each Post-it note on one of the boxes. Ask your child to sort the coins into the correct boxes.

S.E.S.E.: This week’s topic is the lifecycle of the ladybird:

Ladybird Facts: A ladybird is an insect. It is a small, round, flying beetle It hibernates in winter and comes out in spring Not all ladybirds are ladies –some are female and some are male! A ladybird has 6 legs It has 2 antennae, which allow it to touch, taste and smell It uses its two front legs to clean its head and antennae It has black spots on its body Its coloured, spotted body is really a shell that protects two pairs

of delicate wings Ladybirds eat aphids (greenfly)

Page 8: castlejordan-school.weebly.com · Web viewYour child is learning about 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 cent coins. (The 1c and 2c coins are still used to teach basic values of exchange in money).Your

Work for week of : 25/5/20

The female lays her eggs on the underside of a leaf, near aphids so that her babies will have food to eat when they hatch in batches of 40 . Eggs are a yellow or orange colour and usually hatch within 4 to 10 days

The next stage is known as a larva . A larva sheds its skin four times over a 3-6 week period, before attaching itself to a leaf or stem and becoming a pupa.

A pupa: The pupal stage lasts two weeks. He is inside his sleeping bag changing his appearance. This is called metamorphosis.

Ladybird: All ladybirds emerge bright yellow and over the next few hours the distinctive colours and patterns develop

Day 4: Literacy:

-Phonics : Pages 44 and 45 ( Revising vowel digraphs) Just to remind you vowel digraphs are when two vowels come together to make a single vowel sound like oa in boat, ai in rain, ee in sweet and ea in treat. Some find it easier to remember the rule : When two vowels go out talking the first vowel does the talking (Saying his letter name, the other vowel stays quiet)https://safeYouTube.net/w/sw7G (Two vowels song)https://www.arcademics.com/games/coconuts (Tricky enough can you fit the vowel digraph in to make a word?)

- Revise spellings and new words

-Reader: Revise this week’s or continue with one of your supplementary readers

Numeracy: Game 2: Shop - Ask your child to help you make a play shop in a section of a room in the house. Collect a number of easily-sourced items – they can be items that you have bought in the shop. Use Post-it notes or pieces of paper as price tags. Place the price tags on/under the items. No item should cost more than 10c. Make up some questions about the items or get your child to make up some questions, for example: How much does the packet of cereal cost? Which is dearer/more expensive: the apple or the orange? I have 6c. Have I enough money to buy the carrot? Which item is the dearest/most expensive/cheapest/ least expensive?

Maths Book: Part A :Page 113 Lily needs 12c, Leo needs 8c, Emily needs 10c, Leah needs 7c, Jacob needs 20c) While there are various options of coins that can be used e.g. 20c = 1 20c coin, 2 x10c coins, 4 x 5c coins etc we encourage the children to choose the option that requires the least amount of coins or to begin with the coin with the greatest value.

Gaeilge: Listen again to the stories of The three Pigs and The Three Bears

Religion: -Grow In Love Programme/Seasonal Lessons: Summer-Watch video about summer and answer the questions : ‘Which picture is your favourite? Why?’, ’Which of the things in the video have you done before?’, ‘What would it be like if it was sunny all of the time ?’, ‘What kinds of things would you like?’, ‘Is there anything you would miss?’-Say the following poem and prayer

Tg 4 (Gaeilge version of school at home) at 10am will contain some subjects suitable for younger ages . The Irish word for infants is Naíonáin and your child might recognise some of the Gaeilge topic

The theme being explored by the teachers on Cúla4 ar Scoil this week is ‘At Home’. Caitríona will interview the wolf from the story The Three Little Pigs and rewrite the story from the wolf’s perspective. He isn’t the baddie in the story at all, who would have known?! In the history lesson, Caitríona will teach sequences by putting pictures from this and other stories in the correct order. Materials used to build houses will be explored in the science lesson and in the music lesson, Caitríona creates graphic symbols of household sounds and uses them to make music.

After Fiachra the auctioneer (teacher in role) shows us various homes from around the country, we learn how to describe our own home to entice people to buy it. In the art lesson, Fiachra builds the bedroom of his dreams by using recycled materials from the home.

In the geography lesson, Fiachra looks at homes from around the globe and explores one of the major issues of our community at the moment ‘Homelessness’ in the SPHE lesson.

In the maths lesson both teachers will help us identify and expand patterns. Fiachra will explore the rules and properties of sequences in numbers.
