LAST TIME OUT: CASTLETONThe Spartans dropped to 4-2 with a 26-21 loss to Mount Ida on Saturday. Castleton trailed 20-0 with 12 minutes left in the second quarter and was behind 26-7 at the half. The Spartans scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 26-21 and had the ball with two minutes left, before an interception ended the comeback bid. The defense held the Mustangs to 273 yards of total offense and just 113 rushing yards on 49 attempts. The

offense, meanwhile, gained 307 total yards, 249 of which came through the air.

LAST TIME OUT: HUSSONThe Eagles improved to 4-1 with a 12-6 victory over Gallaudet on Saturday in Bangor, Maine. Husson got on the board with four minutes left in the first quarter on a rushing touchdown and then added another score with 1:03 remaining in the half for a 12-0 lead. The Bison finally broke through with 1:47 left in the game to make it 12-6, but the Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. Husson allowed only 155 yards

of total offense, including 68 yards rushing on 33 attempts and held Gallaudet to 1-for-11 on third down. The Eagles gained 366 yards of offense, including 215 on the ground.

RECENT HISTORYCastleton is 3-2 against Husson overall, despite losing on the road 34-3 last year. In its three wins the Spartans have scored at least 34 points, while scoring 20 and three points in its losses. They are 1-1 overall in Spartan Stadium as the teams haven’t played in Vermont since a 40-20 Castleton win in 2011. Last season the Eagles held the Spartans to 194 yards of total offense while racking up 520 of their own, including 356 on the ground in a 31-point win.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANSOffense: Castleton continues to be one of the most balanced offenses in the ECFC, ranking first in total yards (328.0), first in passing yards (188.0) and fifth in rushing yards per game (139.2). Quarterback George Busharis has seen extended time over the past two games and in that span is 22 of 50 for 351 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore Corey Brimmer has been the featured back this year and is averaging 62.4 yards per game with one touchdown, while Matt Rafus and Kevin Alberque have combined for 366 yards and six touchdowns. Alberque also leads the team with 25 receptions for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Zachary Howe is second with 14 catches for 173 yards while Makai Hawkins has 13 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Defense: The Spartan defense has been a turnover machine, tying for first in the nation with 23 turnovers gained. They also rank in the top 20 in both fumble recoveries (12) and interceptions (11). Opponents are averaging 164.3 rushing yards and 176.5 passing yards

per game while scoring 18.7 points per game. Ryan Stanek leads the team with 52 tackles and two interceptions while Darren Callan has 48 tackles and two sacks. Derek McAdoo leads the team with three interceptions on the year. As a team Castleton has 14 sacks with four players recording at least 2.0 sacks.

John Smith leads the team with 81.6 yards per game on 6.7 yards per carry with five touchdowns. Logan Steward, meanwhile, is second with 49.5 rushing yards per game and three touchdowns. Ryan Stroud leads the team with 19 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns while Deon Wiggins has 16 receptions for 227 yards and one score.

Defense: The Eagles are only allowing 15.6 points per game this year, including just 16 total over the past three games. They rank first in the nation, giving up just 62 first downs and are 14th in the nation allowing 245.6 total yards per game. On the ground, teams are rushing for 96.4 yards per game and averaging only 2.8 yards per rush. Husson has picked off six passes while recovering six fumbles and recording 11 sacks. Stephan Dance leads the team with 46 tackles while Ellis Throckmorton is second on the team with 37 tackles and has a team-high 8.5 tackles for a loss. Three different players have 2.0 sacks, including Matt Pellerin, who also has 22 tackles.

ECFC Weekly Honors for Week Seven

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKAl Georgio, Norwich(Sr, RB - West Greenwich, R.I.)

Georgio had another big game for Noriwch rushing for 193 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries for a 7.4 yards per carry average. The senior running back scored a 66-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to help pull the Cadets even at 7-7 enroute to a 37-20 victory over Becker.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKChris Klass, Maritime (N.Y.)(Sr, DB - Nanuet, N.Y.)

Senior cornerback Chris Klass had two interceptions, one of which he returned 60-yards for a touchdown, along with two tackles and a pass breakup in a 40-12 victory over Anna Maria.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEKDiogo Dietrich, Maritime (N.Y.)(Jr, K - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich converted on a pair of field goals, from 43 and 44 yards, and was perfect on all four of his extra point attempts in a 40-12 victory over Anna Maria.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEKDavid Jones, Gallaudet(So, RB - Washington, D.C.)

Jones led the Gallaudet offense in rushing and receiving and threw a touchdown pass on a halfback option play in the final minutes of Saturday’s 12-6 loss at Husson. The sophomore runningback carried the ball seven times for 42 yards and caught two passes for 26 yards. Jones also returned two kickoffs for 30 yards.
