ELLIOTT UPDATE! Cont’d

ELLIOTT

“I was found as a kitten on the streets of Kuwait, with very badly infected eyes. A kind rescue group run by a foreign lady took me to a vet; however, by this time I was blind. My eyes were removed as they could not be saved. I was treated with antibiotics and recovered but, alas, there would be very little chance of me getting adopted now. Not only was I a domestic cat, I was also blind. In Kuwait, domestic cats are often dumped in the street, as most people there want designer kitties with papers. Sadly, I have no papers and am a regular cat. The rescue group in Kuwait was willing to pay for my flight to Canada but needed a shelter to take me on. An animal shelter in Langley, BC, (wherever that is) stepped up to the plate.

“You might think that I would have trouble getting around. Yes, I did bump into a few walls in the beginning, but with my great hearing I got the lay of the land and in no time I knew where everything was, including the litter box which I always used.

“I spent time at the C.A.R.E.S. shelter where I was allowed to play, even though I was blind; I still could do it all: going up and down the big scratching post was not a problem. C.A.R.E.S. had a feather wand with a bell; I could feel the wind in the air as the people passed by me and I could hear the bell; and then the play would begin. I was a hit with the volunteers, who at first thought the whole thing was a bit crazy, but as they got to know me, they began to love me and supported me.

“Lots of friendly people came in and out to see me and give me pets. I like to talk and can be a bit vocal; maybe this is why I have so much company. You might agree with me that I have a lot to say, what with all my adventures!

“C.A.R.E.S. did find me a home. I live in a one-bedroom apartment with a nice lady. She goes to work every day but my hearing is so good, I know when it is her coming down the hall and I always meet her at the door. It took me a bit but I know where everything is in the apartment, even the litter box. Like people, my other senses have compensated for my blindness. The people at C.A.R.E.S. knew that I also deserved a chance at life and enjoyment and kept working to find me that special home.

“Jodi, the lady who fostered me on a trial basis, decided to adopt me and call me her own. I give lots of love and attention to her and she returns it to me. I am one lucky cat to have her in my life!

“THANK YOU C.A.R.E.S. FOR SAVING ME AND FOR HELPING THE CATS AND KITTENS WHO NEED YOU!”

CAT TALES SUMMER 2020

Simba: Giving you an update as promised! Simba has a new name: Wallace (Wally for short). Wally is settling into his new home wonderfully. He is a very affectionate cat, loves being around people and very kitten-like and playful. He made himself right at home immediately and is not shy or hiding. He has some unusual behavior which we will work on. The humping and blanket suckling is still happening a couple times a day, which makes me think he was taken away from his mom too soon as a kitten. He also has some aggressive tendencies. He will attack my legs when I walk by him too quickly. He will park himself on my lap and purr, and rub his face into my neck but all of a sudden attack me even without me petting him. I understand why a home with children would not be suitable. I’m very used to cats that bite so you don’t have to worry, I know he has gone through a lot at a young age and is anxious. I will rehabilitate his behaviour and I’m prepared that this will take time. I’m so happy he is mine! Thank you so much! I have attached some photos as well so you can see that he is happy and settling in well. – Alexis

Taffy:

So, I was put on special diet food and my intake was closely monitored. To date, I have

lost 7 pounds and my grooming habits and litter box issues are resolved! Without the

good work of the C.A.R.E.S. medical team, I would have been doomed.

Carl:

I arrived at this place a week ago. I was a stray and a nice couple started to feed me.

Then they let me come into their home. I am a super friendly guy, love attention and

am a big talker. I chit-chat all day and usually someone pays attention. The couple

loved me, but they were allergic and so, sadly, they surrendered me to C.A.R.E.S. I’d

make a great companion!

CAT TALES SPRING 2020

“I must tell you that

I do not like diets.”

I was surrendered because I was so fat (20 pounds)

and could no longer groom myself which resulted in

poor litter box habits. I am a sweet girl who, like many

others, just loves her food a bit too much.

The C.A.R.E.S. team knew I needed to go on a diet; I

must tell you that I do not like diets. But without some

weight loss, there was little hope of me finding a new

home, not to mention it would be better for my

health.

Buddy:

My first name was THE TAZ, but now it’s Buddy. I was a stray who found my way into

the back yard of Carol, an active volunteer of the C.A.R.E.S. group.

Carol’s cats were not impressed with me and whenever I wandered over, looking for

food, a cat fight would begin, with lots of cat hollering in protest. Even Carol’s dog

would get into it and run to the backyard yapping away. So, Carol named me THE

TAZ, after an animal called the Tasmanian Devil. Carol made sure there was food

and water for me and for the last year I have been visiting her; I even started to get

along with her cats and the howling ended. I came and went peacefully.

I liked to wander the area and found myself at a nice townhouse complex but soon,

I did get into conflict with the other indoor kitties and of course I did some nasty

hissing and howling. Well, it would appear that another C.A.R.E.S. volunteer lived at

the complex (these people seem to be everywhere). She was a bit more determined

than Carol to catch me, so I was trapped and ended up at the vet.

I was not too happy and did make quite the fuss so naturally everyone thought that I

was a feral cat. The vet thought so as well. I was neutered and the plan was to release

me. Carol, however, felt that I was not a feral cat but a cat who had been abandoned

and on his own for a long time. So, she encouraged the C.A.R.E.S. shelter to take me in

and see if they could tame me and maybe, with some luck, get me my own home.

Babe, Victor (and Smoke):

Hello, we are Babe and Victor. We were adopted as kittens

and we are now one year old. Our prior owner did not get us

neutered or provide any shots. We were surrendered because

he was a renter who lived in a non-animal friendly rental,

therefore we could not stay. We understand that this happens

a lot to us cats; people think we are cute kittens and take us in,

only to face heartbreak when they are confronted with eviction.

We are brothers and are bonded. We like to sleep and cuddle

together and would like to go to a new home together. We are a

bit shy at first but once we know you, we warm up. The girls at the

shelter think we are good lookers.

C.A.R.E.S. has ensured that we are ready to move on to a new home. We have been to

the vet, we have had our shots, been defleaed, dewormed and neutered. Come and get

us!

Bessie:

Hi, I’m Bessie. I am a very sweet 9-year-old girl. I love to play and curl up on your lap. I’m

a good cat to have, even if I say so myself. Meow!

I have been a foster cat for many years because I have

allergies and most people don’t want a cat with allergies

because I have to be on special food (Natural Balance

Salmon & Green Pea – wet and dry) and an antihistine.

But that’s okay because I get foster parents who treat

me so well and love me so much. They keep me for a

year or two and then I’m returned to C.A.R.E.S. because

they either move or are not well themselves.

I’m currently looking for a home that I can stay in,

hopefully for more than a couple of years.

Flash: Guess what? I’ve been adopted! Wheeee!

Thank you, C.A.R.E.S.!

Skye:

My name is SKYE. I am a four-year-old female girl who came

to the shelter with my brother, MacGyver, who’s 2 years old.

I am a very social girl and I love to be petted and given attention.

MacGyver is a bit more apprehensive about strangers, but once

he warms up, he is okay.

We are good with other cats and dogs but not so great with kids.

We have been indoor cats only. We were surrendered as our

owner could no longer afford to care for us.

FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS

COVID-19 has made fundraising a challenge; unfortunately, we had to cancel some

events like our pub night and adoptathons. Nevertheless, we have come up with

some new ideas that have worked.

Thanks to the social media team, Andrew, Allison, Natalie, Tanya, Avery, Donna

and Bill, we have been able to reach people to let them know that we are still here

and we are still open to adopt and take in the cats and kittens. Thanks to this

group, we have been able to communicate with our supporters.

The raffle ticket sales have done well and on September 7th we will be pulling out

the names of the lucky winners. You can still buy tickets on line, by going to our

website www.carescatshelter.com

The tickets are: One for $ 15.00 or Four for $ 40.00

• 1st Prize : Holland America cruise for two for seven days to Alaska,

Caribbean, Mexico or Canada/New England. No expiry

date.

• 2nd Prize: 55” Sharp TV

• 3rd Prize: Two nights at the Tiki Shores Beach Resort,

Penticton, plus Sunshine Wine Tour for two during the

Okanagan Wine Festival, as well as dinner for two.

I would like to thank Cedar Rim Nurseries for their contribution of plants for our

site. As always, Russ and his group support our shelter and community.

We will be doing our walk for the cats this year, probably in a different format.

Updates and news will be coming via our social network.

AT THE SHELTER

Hello, my name’s Skye. Well, the volunteers are busy working away every day at the

shelter. I have been here for a week or two.

I have had a chance to meet all of the

morning volunteers, a nice lot of people.

There is a different set each day of the

week. They work as a team of between,

five to six people. They clean all the

cages, do the laundry, clean the windows,

clean the floors, and clean all the dishes

and the litter boxes. Then they give us

fresh water and food.

I love when they stop being so busy and just stop to pet me. This is the best time of

all! I understand that these volunteers do this because they love cats and want to

help us. Without them the shelter would not be able to operate, it is the volunteers

who make the difference.

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities, night meds , adoptions, kitty kisser (these

are people who come and sit and

visit with us), fundraising, social

media people and a person who does

cat intakes as well.

If you are interested in helping, please

contact the shelter, ask for Allison, at

[email protected] or

go to our web site at

for more information.

Thank you!

C.A.R.E.S. CAT SHELTER & COVID-19

As with so many industries in different sectors of our world today, COVID-19 has had a

devastating effect on our animal shelters as well!

Here at C.A.R.E.S, we are now faced with our normal means of fundraising being greatly

impacted by Covid-19……. our Pub Nights have been cancelled, meat draws cancelled,

various markets that we would set up tents and sell our tickets at cancelled and the list

goes on. However, our homeless cats and kitties are still needing our love and care at

these challenging times as well, whether it be shelter, food, on-going medical care and

attention, operations…. they have all one by one found refuge in our shelter and are still

depending on us and needing our help during these worrisome times as well!

This has us at C.A.R.E.S. very concerned and we’ve all been trying to come up with

different ways on how to proceed under these challenging times. With our various

fundraisers being cancelled this year due to Covid-19, we are now trying to reach out in

different ways, using social media for our “appeal” to all of our supporters.

On behalf of our 125 homeless cats/kitties at our shelter, thank you so much for caring!

“July 10th was National Kitten Day, a day intended to remind us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don’t find homes. National Kitten Day was founded by Colleen Paige, pet and family lifestyle expert, author and animal advocate. Paige wanted a day to highlight the fight that kittens face in shelters and to encourage safe adoption.”

Shaw

My name is Shaw.

I am now three years old. I am still shy, but once you get to know me, and I

develop trust, you will find that I am a likeable guy. I love attention, pats,

brushing and also, I am very fond of Temptation treats.

Another problem is that I am an ordinary black cat—not as pretty as some of

the others. Black cats are often neglected, but I hope some kind human will

come and see my good qualities and adopt me. I have been here for two years

and C.A.R.E.S has been here for me! Will that special someone be you?

"If there were to be a universal sound depicting peace, I would surely vote for the purr." Barbara Dimond.

I lived in a barn with my siblings in

Langley. We were all surrendered

to C.A.R.E.S.

As barn cats, we were not used to

people and were very afraid of

them.

I have had a lot of trouble adjusting

to the shelter, mostly because I am

afraid. A few of the volunteers

have taken notice of me and have

been giving me some special

attention.

My cat Harley and I.--Natalie

Gus and Walter were very easy travel companions, curled up together all the way home. Here they are with their new mom in their forever home.
