DESIGN & TRAFFICA POLICY ON GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS (THE “GREEN BOOK”), 6TH EDITION

A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, 6th Edition, 2011, commonly referred to as “the Green Book,” contains the current design research and practices for highway and street geometric design. Developed by the Technical Committee

on Geometric Design, a technical committee of the Subcommittee on Design, the document provides guidance to highway engineers and designers who strive to make unique design solutions that meet the needs of highway users while maintaining the integrity of the environment. It is also intended as a comprehensive reference manual to assist in administrative, planning, and educational efforts pertaining to design formulation. Design guidelines are included for freeways, arterials, collectors, and local roads, in both urban and rural locations, paralleling the functional classification used in highway planning. This new edition was written in coordination with the terms and concepts of the new fourth edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide. 2011. 912 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 6

ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITIONThis book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units—metric and U.S. Customary. This edition supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which

included an update of the Median chapter. The guide is intended to be used as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. It includes a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside. It focuses on safety treatments that can minimize the likelihood of serious injuries when a motorist leaves the roadway. This guide was written for use by design engineers and professionals involved in roadside safety and is considered a significant toll that combines current research with practical experience. 2011. 354 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 7

HIGHWAY SAFETY MANUAL, 1ST EDITIONThe Highway Safety Manual was developed to provide highway professionals with analytical tools to enhance the consideration of safety in the highway development process. With no widely accepted tools previously available, the manual is an effective resource for

highway agencies and safety practitioners, which contains information and science-based tools to better quantify and predict the expected impact of safety decisions in all phases of highway project development: planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. 2010. 972 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 9

GUIDE FOR DESIGN OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURES, 4TH EDITION, WITH 1998 SUPPLEMENT

Provides approaches to pavement design including design and management principles, procedures for new construction or reconstruction, and procedures for rehabilitation of existing pavements. Provides material on overlay design

methodology and rehabilitation, including seven overlay procedures and associated options. Supersedes 1986 edition of the same title. 1993. 630 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 10

GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE FACILITIES, 4TH EDITION

This guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. It is intended to present sound guidelines that result in facilities that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway users. Sufficient flexibility is

permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. However, in some sections of this guide, suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These are recommended only where further deviation from desirable values could increase crash frequency or severity. This guide has been updated from the previous guide published in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the initiation of improvement projects. The intent of this document is to provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing a recommended range of design values and describing alternative design approaches. 200 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 11

AASHTO GUIDE FOR THE PLANNING, DESIGN, AND OPERATIONS OF PEDESTRIAN FACILITIES, 1ST EDITION

The purpose of this guide is to provide guidance on the planning, design, and operation of pedestrian facilities along streets and highways. Specifically, the guide focuses on identifying effective measures for accommodating pedestrians on public rights-of-way.

Appropriate methods for accommodating pedestrians, which vary among roadway and facility types, are described in this guide. The primary audiences for this manual are planners, roadway designers, and transportation engineers, whether at the state or local level, the majority of whom make decisions on a daily basis that affect pedestrians. This guide also recognizes the profound effect that land-use planning and site design have on pedestrian mobility and addresses these topics as well. 2004. 142 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 11

MANUAL ON UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES, 2009 EDITION

The MUTCD 2009 Edition replaces the MUTCD 2003 Edition with Revisions 1 and 2. The MUTCD is incorporated into Federal regulations as the national standard for traffic control devices on all public roads and bike paths. Make sure you have the latest

edition. Written by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 2009 Edition is available as a high quality, printed publication through a cooperative effort between AASHTO, ATSSA, and ITE. The printed version includes: a comprehensive copyrighted index, high-quality print and color-matched graphics, a lay-flat binding designed to withstand continued use, and larger format three-hole drilled pages. Look for these and many other important changes in the MUTCD 2009 Edition: interim approval process for new traffic control devices; chapter on traffic incident management; section on countdown pedestrian signals; considerations for pedestrians and workers in temporary traffic control zones; provision for in-street pedestrian signs; recommendations for letter height on street name signs; use of yield markings at un-signalized mid-block pedestrian crosswalks; and provision for high visibility clothing for workers. 2009. 864 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 12

It also supersedes the Manual for Bridge Evaluation–1st Edition with Interims. It serves as a single standard for the evaluation of highway bridges of all types. 2010. 548 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 19

AASHTO GUIDE MANUAL FOR BRIDGE ELEMENT INSPECTION, 1ST EDITION

The Bridge Element Inspection Manual builds on the element level condition assessment methods developed in the AASHTO Guide for Commonly Recognized Structural Elements. Improvements have been made to fully capture the condition of the elements

by reconfiguring the element language to utilize multiple distress paths within the defined condition states. The multi-path distress language provides the means to fully incorporate all possible defects within the overall condition assessment of the element. The overall condition of an element can be utilized in this aggregate form, or broken down into specific defects present as desired by the agency for Bridge Management System (BMS) use. The Bridge Element Inspection Manual provides a comprehensive set of bridge elements that is designed to be flexible in nature to satisfy the needs of all agencies. The complete set of elements capture the components necessary for an agency to manage all aspects of the bridge inventory utilizing the full capability of a BMS. 2011. 172 pp.FULL DETAILS: PAGE 19

CHAPTER 11, ERECTING MAILBOXES ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS, ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION

Chapter 11 of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide deals with privately owned mailboxes, mailbox supports, and mailbox turnout designs. Highway safety is the primary reason for a transportation agency to become involved in this type of design. Limited data exist for vehicle-mailbox collisions because most record systems do not specifically isolate these types of crashes. However, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System showed 294 deaths in 2008 in which an impact with a mailbox was the first harmful event. Although this number includes crashes in which the mailbox may not have been the direct cause of the fatal injuries, it is significant because it is associated with an unnecessary hazard. Because

many jurisdictions incorporate this chapter by reference into their mailbox regulations, the information in this chapter is frequently of interest to non-engineers and private citizens. Consequently, AASHTO makes this chapter available for purchase separate from the rest of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide at a reduced price. Its content is identical to that found in the full book.

This book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units—metric and U.S. Customary. This edition supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which included an update of the Median chapter. 2011. 354 pp.

A GUIDE FOR ACHIEVING FLEXIBILITY IN HIGHWAY DESIGN, 1ST EDITIONContext-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development.FORMATS: PRINT, ONLINE DOWNLOADPRINT ITEM CODE: 29-FHD-1ONLINE DOWNLOAD ITEM CODE: 29-FHD-1-ULPRICE PER COPY: $60 • AASHTO MEMBERS: $50

PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE DESIGN

GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE FACILITIES, 4TH EDITIONThis guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. It is intended to present sound guidelines that result in facilities that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway users. Sufficient flexibility is permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. 200 pp.FORMAT: PRINT, ONLINE DOWNLOADPRINT ITEM CODE: 29-GBF-4 • ONLINE DOWNLOAD ITEM CODE: 29-GBF-4-ULPRICE PER COPY: $144 • AASHTO MEMBERS: $120

AASHTO GUIDE FOR THE PLANNING, DESIGN, AND OPERATION OF PEDESTRIAN FACILITIES, 1ST EDITIONThe purpose of this guide is to provide guidance on the planning, design, and operation of pedestrian facilities along streets and highways. Specifically, the guide focuses on identifying effective measures for accommodating pedestrians on public rights-of-way. Appropriate methods for accommodating pedestrians, which vary among roadway and facility types, are described in this guide. The primary audiences for this manual are planners, roadway designers, and transportation engineers, whether at the state or local level, the majority of whom make decisions on a daily basis that affect pedestrians. the Guide for Contracting, Selecting, and Managing Consultants in Preconstruction Engineering, published by AASHTO in 1996. In order to assess current practices, questionnaires were developed for both state and consultant practitioners. The responses showed significant growth in the volume of work done by consultants and in the range of services provided by consultants. The results of these surveys, along with the collective experience and expertise of the technical committee membership, were used to restructure much of the guide and to update and expand the discussion of current practices for the effective use of consultants. 2008. 128 pp.FORMATS: PRINT, ONLINE DOWNLOADPRINT ITEM CODE: 29-GCC-1ONLINE DOWNLOAD ITEM CODE: 29-GCC-1-ULPRICE PER COPY: $150 • AASHTO MEMBERS: $125

AASHTO GUIDE MANUAL FOR BRIDGE ELEMENT INSPECTION, 1ST EDITION

The Bridge Element Inspection Manual builds on the element level condition assessment methods developed in the AASHTO Guide for Commonly Recognized Structural Elements. Improvements have been made to fully capture the condition of the elements by reconfiguring the element language to utilize multiple distress paths within the defined condition states. 2011. 172 pp.

TRANSPORTATION ASSET MANAGEMENT GUIDE, 1ST EDITION State transportation officials at all levels face the task of managing a wide range of assets to meet public, agency, and legislative expectations. These assets include the physical transportation infrastructure (e.g., guideways, structures, and associated features and appurtenances) as well as other types of assets: e.g., an agency’s human resources, financial capacity, equipment and vehicle fleets, materials stocks, real estate, and corporate data and information. This study therefore interprets transportation asset management as a strategic approach to managing physical transportation infrastructure. Transportation asset management in this context promotes more effective resource allocation and utilization based upon quality information.
