The liners will be made from premium grade ma-terials in the form of extruded pipe for diameters 25 through 600mm. Adherence to the structural laminate will be achieved by surface treatment of the external surface of the liner pipe, over-wrapped with a chopped strand mat impreg-nated with a specific polyester resin offering ad-hesive properties to the liner material for the PVC based materials and for PP will be achieved by fusion of suitable fiberglass woven roving into the external surface of the liner. Pipe and fittings larger than 400 mm will be made from glass backed polypropylene sheets manu-factured from identical grade material.

Welds may be carried out by either hot gas or butt fusion welding. Unless otherwise specified the structural laminate of all pipe shall be made by filament winding using an isothalic polyester resin and 2400 tex. continuous roving. Fittings will be laminated using combinations of contact and compression molding, or both.

Dimensions in this document are based upon the raw materials known to-day, and the specifi-cation of alternative raw materials may cause small modifications in thickness and diameter.

CATALOGUE TECHNIQUE TYPE B/ TECHNICAL CATALOGUE B TYPE

The fittings described in the CTRA DIN type B catalogue are subject to a limitation in allow-able service pressure and temperature as a function of diameter in conformity with the stan-dard. Subsequently it is often impossible to manufacture a complete pipe system in confor-mity with the standard when in the presence of higher service pressures and / or temperatures. Taking into account the evolution of chemical manufacturing technologies, which require lar-ger diameters and higher service pressures and temperatures throughout the range, together with the introduction of the European directive concerning pressurized equipment, initiatives have been undertaken to remedy this situation. situation

We offer you an alternative specification, follow-ing the requirements of the DIN standards as far as the configuration and overall dimensions of the fittings are concerned, but with an in-creased thickness.

We offer you a summary of this alternative specification

● The raw materials and procedures for manu-facturing and control remain unchanged. ● The dimensions of pipes and junctions remain unchanged, but diameters 700 through 1000mm are added. ● The overall dimensions of elbows, tees and reducers remain unchanged, whereas the thick-ness of the structural laminate is increased, and by consequence, the individual weight. ● Fixed flanges are not available within this specification. ● The collars are modified as detailed on the attached table. The thickness of the collars indi-cated in the table have been defined by the engineering company UHDE GmbH because of their requirements in the construction of chlorine plants, the calculations, based upon specific mechanical properties, have been approved by TÜV Munich, and the collars have been sub-sequently qualified by physical testing on proto-types manufactured and tested by our com-pany.

Dilatation Expansion

Thermal expansion and contraction

One of the most significant sources of stress in-duced in reinforced plastic pipe systems is de-veloped from thermal expansion or contraction of the piping components. Moreover, thermal expansion and contraction of metallic compo-nents such as pumps or vessels, which are rigidly connected to the pipe system, can induce stress in the pipe. There are 4 commonly used methods to handle thermal expansion and con-traction in reinforced plastic piping systems. pip-ing piping piping piping piping piping piping piping 1. – Totally restrained or “Blocked” system

This method entails anchoring the system at every directional change using sufficiently heavy anchors to constrain the end loads im-posed upon them. Most buried systems can be considered as blocked. In buried systems, the back filled trench serves to constrain the pipe system and prevents lateral displacement. In above ground systems consideration must be given as to the design and location of guides. Guides serve to prevent buckling and lateral displacement when the pipe system attempts to elongate against the anchoring constraints. Constraints constraints constraints constraints constraints constraints constraints constraints

2. – Absorbing expan-sion and contraction with directional changes

In fairly complex sys-tems there are usually a sufficient number of elbows such that a slight bending of the elbow can absorb ex-pansion. This ap-

proach is widely used to deal with thermal ex-pansion, but care should be taken in checking

This method of handling thermal expansion is generally reserved for long straight runs, and in-volves the designer simply introducing 4 direc-tional changes in the pipe run in order to absorb the expansion.

4. – Expansion joint

This approach is widely used in above ground installations, and is by far the simplest method to deal with thermal expansion and con-traction. In most cases an elastomer bellow is used .

Supportage Support

1. Supports

1. – Supports

Supports are an integral part of the pipe system and absorb vertical loads from such sources as the dead weight of the system itself, the fluid being conveyed within the sys-tem, and various equipment such as valves, expansion joints etc...

2. – Anchors and restraints

These bracing components are used to absorb those end loadings imposed by thermal stresses

and the internal pressure to which the pipe system is exposed. If the designer elects to specify expan-sion joints to accommodate ther-mal expansion and contraction,

the system still requires restraint, otherwise inter-nal pressure will act to extend the expansion joint to its full length, which in turn will impose excessive bending loads on tees and elbows.

The important consideration for an-chors and restraints is that they are sufficiently strong to constrain the movements for which they are in-tended to resist. Generally, such

items as vessels and pumps (when not con-nected to the piping system with flexible con-nectors) function as anchors. In the absence of such equipment anchors and restraints should

be included where analysis indi-cates that excessive loads will be induced in the system. Different configurations of anchors and re-straints are illustrated below. Below below below below below below

CTRA recommends that it cannot be overem-phasized that in line equipment such as valves,

flow meters, expansion joints etc. must be inde-pendently supported. Various support configu-rations are illustrated below.

It is always desirable that the performance of restraints, guides and supports be observed dur-ing initial start up to see if they perform as in-tended. Adjustment is required if unanticipated stress occurs which could distort or damage the piping system.

1. - Handling, transporting and storing of piping materials Generally, when pipe is received, it is unloaded and stored in a central area until such time as the installation crew is ready to move it to the installation site. The designer or the project engi-

neer should be certain that the personnel who are responsible for unloading the piping materials are familiar with the recommended precautions. Under no circumstances should the pipe be thrown to the ground from the

height of the truck bed.

One should never at-tempt to carry several joints of loose pipe.

The project manager should also keep in mind the fact that reinforced plastic pip-ing materials are con-siderably lighter than

their steel equivalents, and that strong winds can wreak havoc to pipe joints stacked without precaution.

Certain projects should be observed in lifting pipe joints and this is especially relevant if the installer is lifting double-jointed pipe assemblies. A spreader bar should always be used when lifting pipe joints with mechanical machinery. The pipe should be sus-

pended with slings from the spreader bar. The bar should be half the length of the pipe joint (or double jointed assem-bly) to be lifted. Do not lift ad-hesive bonded joints or lami-nated joints until the resin sys-tem has developed a full cure.

If piping materials arrive at the job site in a dam-aged condition, it is important to notify the manufacturer immediately by telephone, and this verbal notification should be followed up by written notification. The written notification should be quite detailed, and should include photographs of the damaged goods. The car-rier should also be notified immediately.
