1500 Possibly Joannes Eucharius Carolus Alberti (1777-ca.1850), oil oncanvas (relined), Nude man with two spears and shield in the left armand one spear in the right arm, appr. 1810, dim. 112 x 88 cm. Theartist J.E. Alberti was born in Maastricht (baptized in the parish of St.Martinus in Wijk) as the son of an Italian lawyer and his Liège wife. Inhis youth he lives and works in Amsterdam. At the beginning of the19th century, he wins a gold medal which launches his career. Duringthe reign of King Louis Napoleon, Alberti travels to Paris and Rome. Inthe French capital, he is apprenticed to Jacques Louis David, theneoclassical painter of that time. In Rome he works diligently in theAcademy but apparently he cannot choose 1 art subject and 'he ishindered in his progress'. This painting represents a classic warrior.This may be Titus Tatius, the Sabine opponent of the founder ofRome, Romulus. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has two similarwarrior portraits (link:https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/collectie/SK-A-651).
