Dale LaFollettes Vintage MOTORPHOTO Spring 2002 Most of the photos in this catalog are single images only, meaning that I have only one of them and I do not own the negatives. I do not sell copy photos unless they are of a really rare subject and then this fact is mentioned in the description. Most photos by known photographers have the photographer's stamp on the reverse and many have writing on them in the form of a description and\or cropping notes. No claims are made for photo authorship unless I have conclusive proof, therefore many of the photos listed under ANONYMOUS could very well have been taken by well known photographers. It is probable that most photos were the only one, or one of few printed from the negative. All photos are black and white unless "color" in mentioned. All photos are printed on fiber based paper unless RC to denote "resin coated" is in the description (see legend). None of the photos listed are mounted permanently (unless specifically noted) so you will be free to use or display them as you wish. THE GRAND SPORT SERIES

I just made that name up but the following photos fit that description as they are negatives that I have chosen for their quality and style, they are the BEST! I do not own these negatives, they reside in Europe so when I order photos from them sometimes it takes up to six months to receive them.

I have sold dozens of these photos at races and shows, they all measure 12 X 16 and are matted with archival mat board to 16 X 20. These images are available in Europe but they are printed on Resin Coated paper over there. I pay the extra to have them on Fiber Based paper as the blacks are blacker and they will last indefinitely compared to the Resin paper.

A couple of catalogs ago I printed little thumbnail photos of some of these but it took too much space and was a real pain to move around. I can and will send digital photos of each of these by e-mail if you ask.

The price is $160 on each of these and shipping is now $10 on 16 X 20 photos in the U.S., still at cost overseas.

(GS1) Peter Collins, Ferrari, Dutch GP 1958, 1/4ing front view, action, car well out of shape, crowd behind. $160(GS2) Elevated rear view of George Eyston, MG K3, Brooklands, a posed photo, George is looking back at the camera over his shoulder, car on the rough concrete of Brooklands, wonderful! $160

(GS3) The Clement/Watney Bentley Speed Six, LeMans 1930, rounding a corner, 1/4ing front view, two men peering through a fence in the foreground, policemen, spectators, houses in background. This is a great photo, I have one left and the negative has been sold out from under me so this is the last one. $160

(GS5) Tazio Nuvolari, Bugatti Type 59, Spain 1934, 1/4ing front view, in pits, mechanics behind car, stylish lady approaches from the rear, looks exactly like Betty Boop, Nuvolari in looking at her in his rear view mirror, the devil! $160

If this is your subject you will love this photo so much that you will put me in your will JUST FOR SELLING IT TO YOU!! . . . .well, maybe not. $160

(GS14) Fangio, Mercedes Benz W196, action side view, tight, winning the Italian GP at Monza 1955, the man is really racing, he is covered in grime and he is so placid, fabulous. $160

FRAMING! The above photos deserve to be framed and I see too many black and white photos framed incorrectly so I am going to give you my humble opinion on the subject and you can take it from there. (I spent 5 years in art school and this is what I learned!)

In a word; METAL FRAMES. They do not leach toxic gases that can affect a photograph like wood or plastic.

GRAY. Sometimes called gun metal gray, metallic gray, etc. This is the best color to use on black and white photos as black frames (many peoples choice) takes away from the blackest part of the photo thus making a stronger statement than the photograph. Silver can be used as an alternative to gray.

BROWN or GOLD. Sepia photos should be framed with a brown or gold frame, I much prefer brown but it is your choice. (I hate gold frames so just dont tell me you did it.)

Finally, use UV protective glass over the photos, it is more expensive but the photos last much longer when displayed.

EPHEMERA (THE RARE BITS!) (10% discount on two (2) or more items in AUT or EPH catagory when total exeeds $300 except where noted)

(EPH55) Youve read the books, you know the story. The 1933 Grand Prix of Tripoli had a lottery attached to it, the lottery winners were announced too early, one winner assigned to each driver entered. Varzi (some say) made contact with his winner and made a deal, if he would split the lottery winnings with the drivers Varzi would see to it that the drivers would let him win. Nuvolari led most of the race only to be passed by Varzi while he was in the pits. He then chased down Varzi and passed him. But Varzi repassed on the last corner to win. The whole truth of this race is still unknown. Now you can own an actual artifact from that day, a handbill that advertises the Lottery in Tripoli in 1933. It measures 11 X 16 and is folded 4 ways. It is a greenish black ink printed on cream paper, minor pencil writing to the front, otherwise excellent. We will not see one of these again. $175. No discounts apply.

They are available for the following drivers, remember, each is signed by the driver and, of course, there is only one of each:

(EPH68) Sunday August 8, 1937, the Monaco Grand Prix, von Brauchitsch wins in his Mercedes W125. Did you have the winning lottery ticket? It is probably a little late to win but you can buy a beautifully engraved, three color lottery ticket with a Grand Prix car featured in the middle. (It is supposed to be an Alfa but not quite as they must not have wanted to insult the German contingent.) These are genuine 1937 Monaco GP lottery tickets in mint condition, 2 1/4 X 4. I have several so I can even offer them in consecutive numbers if you wish more than one. Mount it on your wall and tell your friends it was the winner, what do they know? While they last. $25 each.

(EPH73) Ellery Garfield, engineer, worked for Renault in the 20s designing and driving both the 1925 Renault 40CV open car and the 1926 Renault 40CV cabin speedster that claimed 24 hour speed records at Montlhery, the 1926 car being the first car to record speeds over 100 mph in 24 hours beating the Bentleys to the record. Garfield wrote of his exploits in two letters sent to C. Harold Wills, principal in Wills St Clair automobiles. The first letter is a four page hand-written letter written and signed sometime after the 1925 record. The second letter was type-written and signed after the 1926 100 mph record, it is two pages long. Also included are four photos of the 1925 car in action and during a pit stop and six photos of the 1926 cabin speedster including action, pit stops and three different views of the car at rest. (EPH89) This one is so cool it makes my hands sweat! How about a four color folding road map depicting the actual roads to be used for the GRAND PRIX de lA.C.F, 2 Juillet 1907 or the French Grand Prix of July 2, 1907 Folded it measures 3 1/4 X 8, expanded it is 16 X 37 .. Attached to it is a 12 page booklet with the entry lists, advertisements, and if I could read French, a whole lot more. Considering its age I would say it is in excellent condition with minimal wear. Some goon has put transparent tape in some locations on the back (blank side) of the map to re-enforce folds and some of the folds are separating but it can easily be restored. The paper is a very even cream color and the colors on the map and advertisements are bright. $175 No discounts apply.

Finally, if you are looking for books on racing or on any part of automotive history, shop manuals, brochures, hand books or even old Road & Track Magazines you could do a lot worse than call my good friend and event partner, Logan Gray of Vintage Motorbooks. He can be reached at 503 2924227 or fax at 503 292 5636. His e-mail address is [email protected]. Dont look to Logan for a catalog as he does not have one but do ask him if he has what you want. His prices are always reasonable and he is very knowledgeable. He also has a huge warehouse full of cool stuff.
