The canine protagonist of the short lm“Guard Dog”, by Bill Plympton, has justarrived in Rio de Janeiro. In 2004, this
faithful yet paranoid dog made audiences roarwith the violent acts that he imagined could
be perpetrated against his owner by creatures so inoffensive as a buttery, a bird and a squirrel.
This year, besides appearing again in the short lm “Guide Dog”, this famous character willbe the visual ID of Anima Mundi 2006. Andas a tribute to this edition of the festival, he
even brought along a tambourine, a zabumba(typical drum) and a viola, trading in hisusual cautiousness for spontaneity. After all,
he is on vacation.
The creator of this year’s illustrations, Bill Plympton, is an old friend of ours. Bill was present at Anima Mundi in 1994, explaining how he turned his “Microtons” and other short lms into popular attractions on MTV. Atthat time, he also presented his rst feature-
lm “The Tune”.
Since then, Bill Plympton has become one ofthe most successful independent animators
in the world, known for his sarcastic andirreverent humor – which suits us Brazilians

importantes do mundo. Conrma, assim,
a solidez de uma trajetória absolutamente
singular.
outros segmentos do ofício cinematográco.
Reiteramos, desta forma, nosso compromisso
com o cinema do Brasil. Temos plena
consciência da importância da Petrobras para
a indústria cinematográca brasileira atual, e
desenvolvimento do Brasil.
desenvolvido.

Anima Mundi reaches its 14th edition as
one of the three most important animation
festivals in the world. Its durability conrmsthe solid foundation of its truly individual
trajectory. And it does this while preserving
two of its principal characteristics: to
contribute both to the diffusion of animation
cinema in our country and to the training of
professionals in this and other segments of
the movie business.
In the course of its editions, Anima Mundi
seeks to democratize information and
training. It does this through workshops,
debates, seminars, round-table discussions
and speeches that bring together some of
the most world-renowned professionals. Itis worth noting, by the way, that a good
part of the Brazilians who participate
in animation festivals have at some time
passed through Anima Mundi’s workshops
and courses, that make room for the most
advanced technologies as well as for the
more traditional methods of animation
cinema.
Thanks to all of this, Anima Mundi attracts
each year a larger and larger public to the
activities in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The 14th edition counts, one more time, with the support of Petrobras, the largest
Brazilian company and the largest patron of
the arts and culture in our country.
We reafrm, in this way, our commitment
to Brazilian cinema. We are completely
conscious of the importance of Petrobras tothe contemporary Brazilian cinematographic
industry and reafrm the breadth of this
role. We support the work of some of the
most distinguished names in the business
without losing sight, at any time, of the
impact of the work of new generations and
the production of lms and videos in the most diverse of formats. We could not leave
out, therefore, animation cinema.
Stronger even than our support for cinema,
Petrobras has, since its foundation, a
primordial obligation: to contribute to the
development of Brazil.
And we all know that a country that does
not recognize, respect and disseminate the
work of its artists will hardly become a
developed country.

anteriores do Anima Mundi.
cursos livres, workshops e palestras gratuitos.
criatividade do nosso povo e contribui paradivulgar e preservar nossa cultura.

The largest and most important animation
festival in the Americas reaches its 14th
edition respected as a showcase for the very
best in the international scene and also as avaluable tool for the growth of national lm
production, by revealing and inspiring new
talent. A partner in this initiative since the
festival began in 1993, the Cultural Center
of the Banco do Brasil points out with pride
that some of the lms and videos now on
display were created by artists whose rstexperiences in the eld occurred in previous
editions of Anima Mundi.
One of the main points of the festival is
exactly to provide the public with the
opportunity to either get to know or to
delve deeper into the various animation
techniques presented in the workshops, free
courses and free lectures. It proposes as
well to work as a space in which Brazilian
authors – many of whom nanced thework they submitted themselves – can have
contact with potential supporters and large
production companies and studios.
Convinced of the power of communication
and fascination that animation cinema
has over adults and children, the Banco do Brasil reiterates its support for one more
Anima Mundi that, by encouraging the local
industry, values the creativity of our people
and contributes to spreading and preserving
our culture.

IBM has been a technological partner with
Anima Mundi for four years. The software
MUAN (Motion Universal Analyzer) was
born out of this fruitful partnership, and is featured in the animation workshops of this
the14th edition of the festival.
Developed on Linux platform, MUAN makes
simple and quick the digital capturing
and editing of scenes made in a variety
of techniques. Also, it makes possible a specic methodology for the introduction
of animation into elementary school
curriculums, as the Anima Escola project has
been doing for already ve years .
That initiative stimulates students andteachers to express themselves through
audiovisual language and makes possible
the discovery of new talents in animation

Much like our dear Michaela Pavlatova, we festival directors also await anxiously for the moment when we will all be able to communicatewithout relying so much on words. One day, as in
Michaela’s lm, images alone will do the job.
There are yet many years, and many Anima Mundi festivals, to come before this happens. Meanwhile, let’s get going:
The language of animation continues to growthroughout the world and in Brazil. As each day
goes by, more and more people are able to “talk”
through images thanks to this medium. We are allbecoming very familiar with the innite formatsand styles that this idiom without frontiers allowsand inspires, as well as with the multiples toolsthat make this art possible.
From the phenakistoscope to the cintiq (it’s up to you to gure out what these weird words referto), a variety of devices lead to one sole truth: the
human being can communicate and think throughimages. These might lead to less translation errorsthan the good old words, and humanity might
nally come to an understanding... then again, maybe not.
So let’s get started, enough with the words, and now to the lms, the world is here to talk to us.
We want to listen to your images, so if you don’t have pencils and paper please use our own, alongwith clay, sand, bodies, cut-outs and whateverelse you come up with in our Open Studio… and a
great festival to us all!!!
* “Reci, reci, reci”, by Michaela Pavlatova, is one of
the masterpieces included in the fourth volume ofthe DVD “The Best of Anima Mundi”, that is comingout during this 14th edition of the festival.

Canal Futura, TVE, Cartoon Network e TV
Cultura.
as linguagens do Super 8 e vídeo. Mais
tarde compraram um Macintosh e a TV
PinGuim foi pioneira no país na produção
de animação 2D digital, ao utilizar esta
técnica na produção da série de vinhetas
Rita, para a TV Cultura, em 1993.
A produtora atualmente cria, viabiliza e
canadenses.

Célia Catunda and Kiko Mistrorigo created
TV PinGuim in 1989 with the goal of developing
quality programming for TV, video, cinema and
later, the internet. TV PinGuim specializes in the
creation of programming for children. Its shows
have aired on the main Brazilian channels such
as TV Bandeirantes, Rede Globo, Canal Futura, TVE,
Cartoon Network and TV Cultura.
When they met each other at FAU (College of
Architecture and Urban Development at Sao Paulo
University), both animators were experimentingwith Super 8 and video. Later on, they bought a
Macintosh and TV PinGuim became a pioneer in 2D
digital animation in Brazil. In 1993, they used this
technique to create a series of vignettes with the
character Rita, for TV Cultura.
The production company now creates, developsand produces series for the international market.

The recent experience of the partners of TV
PinGuim includes the series Peixonauta (52 x 11

were made in co-production with Canadian
producers. In the Animated Chat, partners
Catunda and Mistrorigo will talk about their

also discuss potential production techniques
for TV series and the importance of the script in

metragens premiados como “The Reluctant
Dragon” e “The Fool of the World”.
A Mackinnon & Saunders
crianças famosos como “Bob the Builder”, “Engie
“Corpse Bride” (“A Noiva Cadáver”).
inúmeros lmes no currículo, e clientes comoWarner Bros., HIT Entertainment, Nickelodeon,
Cosgrove Hall Films, Gerry Anderson, BBC, Will
Vinton Studios, Aardman, Loose Moose, Barry
Purves e Disney, Ian Mackinnon certamente terá
muita experiência para compartilhar.

Founded in 1992, Mackinnon and Saunders
are known for creating the best stop-motion
puppets in the world today. Before they madetheir partnership ofcial, Ian Mackinnon and
Peter Saunders worked together in one of the
largest animation studios in Europe, Cosgrove

that made award-winning shorts such as
“The Reluctant Dragon” and “The Fool of theWorld”.
Ian Mackinnon has been described as a
“naturally obsessive” animator, a trait which
has helped him to perfect the mechanics of
puppet animation like no one else. In 1993,
Mackinnon also produced “The Sandman”, a macabre short lm that was very successful in
the international circuit, and which culminated
in an Oscar nomination. Mackinnon & Sunders
soon attracted the attention of Tim Burton
and in 1995 he hired them to create the models
for his lm “Mars Attacks”!Over the last few years, Mackinnon and
Saunders’ workshops located in northern
England have served as birthplace for famous
children’s TV programs such as “Bob the
Builder”, Engie Benjy” and “Koala Bros”.
Besides creating the extraordinary puppets for the feature length “League of Gentlemen’s
Apocalypse” (based on the famous BBC
program), the company partnered with Tim
Burton once again to create the puppets for his
latest animation lm, “Corpse Bride”. In order
to give life to these characters, Mackinnon and
Saunders developed sophisticated mechanics
capable of generating a subtlety and range of facial expressions that had never been seen
before.
With over 60 TV programs, 70 commercials,
innumerable lms in their résumé, and clients
such as Warner Bros., HIT Entertainment,

to share.

estágio do storyboard. Às vezes o som exerce
uma inuência crucial num lme. Outras vezes
origem, Israel. “Bitzbutz”, seu primeiro curta,
feito com massa de modelar sobre vidro,
aborda o tema das disputas por território.
Admirador do trabalho de Paul Driessen eCaroline Leaf, do National Film Board of Canada,
e mais recentemente Mark Baker e Michaela
Pavlatova, Alkabetz considera o humor e a
no estúdio de animação Frame by Frame.
Entre 1985 e 1995, foi animador e ilustrador
free-lancer.
Alemanha, e recebeu o prêmio “Filmband in
Gold”. Depois vieram os também premiados
“Yankale” e “Rubicon”.
curta infantil “Trim Time” e o experimental

Anyone who did not get a chance to see the
award-winning short “Morir de Amor” in the
last edition of Anima Mundi, will have one
more opportunity. The director Gil Alkabetz
will present it as well as other of his lms inthe Animated Chat. “Morir de Amor”, in which
the memories of two caged parrots bring
disastrous consequences for the owner, is an
example of what Alkabetz does best: create
original and concise scripts. In his lms, one
narrative resource like the sound can be just
as important as the rest. As he says: “I try
to think of the sound already at the stage of
the storyboard. Sometimes, sound can have a
crucial inuence on a lm. Other times, it can
even be the essence of the story, as in the case
of “Morir de Amor”.
Alkabetz lives in Germany now, but some of his lms show traces of his homeland, Israel.
“Bitzbutz”, his rst short, made with plasticine
on glass, touches upon the theme of territorial
disputes. An admirer of the work of Paul
Driessen and Caroline Leaf, of the National
Film Board of Canada, and more recently of
Mark Baker and Michaela Pavlatova, Alkabetzconsiders humor and irony traps that skeptics
like him use to capture their audience: “Then
you can transmit whatever pessimistic view
of life you have.”
Trained in graphic design at the Academy of Art
and Design at Bezlel, Alkabetz worked in the
animation studio Frame by Frame. Between 1985 and 1995, he was a freelance animator and
illustrator. His second lm, “Swamp”, which
shows a pointless war between two armies
suspended by watercolor balloons, was made
at Kunstakademie Stuttgart, in Germany and
received the “Filmband in Gold” prize. The
prize winning lms “Yankale” and “Rubicon”
came next. But Alkabetz’s best known work is
perhaps the animated sequences of the live-action feature lm “Lola Rennt” (Run Lola,
Run), by Tom Tykwer.
In 2001, Alkabetz founded the Sweet Home
Studio in Stuttgart along with his wife and
collaborator Nurit Isreali, where he produces
commissioned work for TV and personal
projects like the children’s short “Trim Time”
and the experimental “Travel to China”,
in which the story is told through a single

John Canemaker acaba de vencer o Oscar
pelo curta-metragem autobiográco “The Moonand the Son”, um diálogo imaginário com seu
pai, um explosivo imigrante italiano. O lme –
“You Don´t Have to Die” – vencedor
que tem câncer e “Break the Silence: Kids Against
of Visual Arts, em NY.
do Marymount Manhattan College, onde ele
Disney. Em 1981, fundou o seu próprio estúdio
– John Canemaker Productions – onde realiza

autobiographical short lm The Moon and the
Son”, an imaginary dialogue with his father,
an explosive Italian immigrant. The lm –
which mixes original animation, photos and
family movies – might be the most personal ofCanemaker’s lms but certainly not the most
serious. The animator is known for touching
upon weighty themes. “You Don’t Have to
Die” – winner of the Oscar for best short
documentary in 1988 – portrays the experience
of an eight year old child who has cancer and
“Break the Silence: Kids Against Child Abuse”
gives form and color to the feelings of children
who are victims of domestic violence. For
Canemaker, animation is an ideal language for
exploring the universe of sentiment, and the
market is currently more receptive to intimate
and autobiographical lms. Besides being an award-winning animator,
Canemaker is also a professor and director of
the animation department at the Tisch School
of the Visual Arts in NY. In fact, it was in the
Big Apple that he began his multi-faceted
career acting in off-Broadway plays and TV
commercials, as well as presenting Patchwork Family, a TV program for children. At 28 years
of age, Canemaker took on a research project on
the Walt Disney studio archives commissioned
by a nun and professor at Marymount
Manhattan College, were he was studying at
the time. In California, he was received with
open arms by the “Nine Old Men”, the revered“old school” of animation.
In addition to a rst project about the history
of animation, the trip gave him a job as editor
of the magazine Millimeter and later a book
got a masters at N.Y.U. where he made two
documentaries, one about Otto Messmer,
creator of the legendary Felix the Cat, and
another about Winsor McCay, the animation
pioneer from the pre-Disney era. In 1981, he founded his own studio – John Canemaker
Productions – where he produces personal
projects and commissioned work for TV. With
many award-winning lms, 11 books about the
history of animation, along with innumerous
articles published in the New York Times, and
lms that are part of the Museum of Modern
Art’s archive in NY, there are few people who
know as much about animation as he does.

o renomado animador tcheco, Jiri Trnka.

to an art team between 1946 and 1950 in
the Toho studio, where, besides spending
time with great directors such as Teinosuke
Kinagasa, Shiro Toyoda and Mikio Naruse,
he learned the indispensable technique of
scenery construction. His rst contact with
the animation of puppets happened in 1953,
when he became an apprentice to Tadahito
Mochinaga.
In 1958, he founded Shipa Production, a
production company for television commercials.
It took four years for Kawamoto to return to
his real passion: working with puppets. Hewrote a letter to the renowned Czech animator,
Jiri Trnka. Six months later, he received an
invitation from Trnka himself to an internship
at his studio in Prague, where he was very
well-received and learned the secret of how
to give life to his characters. Back in Japan,
Kawamoto returned to his work in commercial
animation in order to support himself. But it
was his puppets for children’s programs on TV
that paid for his personal projects such as the
shorts “Hanaori”(1968), “The Demon” (1970)
an “Oni” (1972) that already showed signs of
an individual and poetic style. Kawamoto
experimented animation with cut-outs in the
shorts “Tabi” (1973) and “A Poet’s Life” (1974),
but, unsatised with the result, returned to
puppets, directing the magnicent “Dojoji
Temple” (1976) and “House of Flame” (1979).
His last lm, the overpowering feature-length
“Shisha no Sho” (The Book of the Dead), tells
the story of a young Buddhist who helps
the ghost of a prince let go of the material
world.
We also bring to Brazil the premiere of “Winter Days”, a beautiful and original feature
lm produced by Kihachiro Kawamoto in
collaboration with Japanese and International
animation masters. The lm is structured by
the “renku”, a traditional Japonese style of
poetry in which different hai-kais are strungtogether.
Full of beauty, the lms of Kawamoto are a
gift to the public and also serve as homage to
the master Trnka.
