DPS is about the mystery encountered in a slide across deep snow.

With its roots ingrained in high-performance powder skiing, DPS has pioneered the use of aerospace carbon fiber to design and build skis that are lighter, stronger, and more powerful than conventionally built fiberglass and metal skis. The fusion of cutting-edge carbon technology and ultra-progressive shaping has resulted in the most advanced and complete quiver of high-performance skis built today.

The goal is to build the perfect ski. DPS strives to link the skier, the ski, and the ski builder in an intimately connected triangle

DPS is an innovative design-based company and a pioneer. Combining grassroots culture with advanced engineering, DPS has redefined the way skis are shaped and has successfully developed the world’s first pure carbon fiber sandwich ski.

The company story is unique in the ski world: it has been written by a tight tribe of skiers inspired by a lifestyle dedicated to the art of riding deep snow. DPS founder Stephan Drake has spent his life dedicated to high-performance powder skiing and riding big lines around the world. A passion for the perfect turn translated into the search for the perfect ski; one that would combine innovative design with revolutionary space age technology. Drake was the first to introduce the term “Rocker” to skiing, and has been a featured speaker at the National Design Conference. In 2005, he partnered with Peter Turner, a leading composites engineer, and the former head engineer at Volant. Peter worked with Shane McConkey to engineer the Spatula and has been instrumental in the integration of prepeg carbon and steel technology into ski design.

The DPS community is comprised of a network of skiers obsessed with the search for deep snow and the lifestyle that accompanies the quest.

We call it Alexandra’s. It’s deep in the Chilkats—and not easy to get to. It’s a special feeling riding to Alexandra’s on our sleds. When you round the final corner to the amphitheater entrance, you quickly realize the area is in its own vortex with its own magical properties; it’s like you’ve entered a freezer. There are huge hanging glaciers that surround the zone, which dramatically cools the air and snow.

What this means is simple: you can ride dry, deep powder late into spring. Five miles away it may be spring skiing, but in Alexandra’s it’s cold and the snow stays good.

Jon Larsson, a fellow Swede, came on as a DPS skier in the 09/10 season. He traveled with the DPS crew on this trip to AK late last spring. We were all obsessed with the idea of deep glacier camping so that we could shoot sunrise and sunset shots, and then just crawl into a cozy snow cave. This was our first planned overnight at Alexandra’s. We were stoked. But sometimes things don’t go as planned, especially when it comes to glacier camping.

This shot was taken on the first night, out of four. We arrived in the morning and were busy shooting until sunset. We didn’t start building the snow cave until darkness set in. In hindsight, that was not the smartest decision considering we were collectively dead tired. After more than two hours of camp preparation, and well after sunset, we were solely motivated to eat and sleep. I was the last person into the cave and the guys had already started cooking inside. This shot was my last frame that day, and signaled the beginning of a long, cold Alaskan night—and four days of epic skiing ahead.— Oskar Enander

▸ New York’s Hayden Planetariumwould be jealous. DPS riders Stephan Drake and Jon Larsson cook dinner after a long day of filming and shooting in Alaska’s Chilkats.

Stephan and I make a point of returning to this zone every year. It’s too good not to.

Pure: Carbon+Nano. Truly unique, DPS Pure construction makes for the most advanced and highest performance skis made on earth. Pure: Carbon+Nano features exclusive aerospace carbon and nanotech technology, and the absolute finest accompanying materials. Revolutionary on both paper and on snow, the Pure construction showcases years of research and refinement in a ski that is 30 percent lighter than conventional constructions, while at the same time 30 percent torsionally stiffer, stronger, and more powerful.

Hybrid: Fiberglass+Carbon+Bamboo. The Hybrid line makes the DPS quiver more accessible to more skiers and creates a point of reference for the Pure: Carbon+Nano line. While evoking all the shaping and flex pattern heritage of the Pure line, Hybrid skis represent a direct technological comparison to industry standard constructions, but with sweet upgrades like carbon fiber stringers, bamboo core laminates, and the finest, fastest bases made.

Carbon is an amazing material. It allows us to significantly reduce the overall weight of a ski while simultaneously making the ski more powerful and responsive. Torsionally rigid, lightweight skis are the future of performance skiing. They move under your body with lightning quick precision, and save precious energy that results in less fatigue. A lightweight ski without dampening or pop is low performance, as is a heavy ski with average reactivity and maneuverability. Through intel-ligent design and proprietary construction, both Hybrid: Fiberglass+Carbon+Bamboo and Pure: Carbon+Nano are easier to ski and more reactive than their conventional counterparts.

Quiver 11/12

The DPS mission is simple: to build the perfect ski. We search for and employ cutting-edge technology, design, and shaping with no compromises. The resulting quiver reflects our personal dream-bag of skis. It’s not about market segments or satisfying particular demographics. It’s quite simply about building the most progressive, highest performing skis on the planet. We control our engineering and development from start to finish and evolve flex patterns and layups with a raceroom mentality. From the frontside charger, the Cassiar

80, to the versatile hardpack and powder slaying Wailer 112RP, to the spine surfing Lotus 138, each shape and flex pattern is optimized to cover the total span of snow/terrain possibilities.

Wailer 112RPThe Wailer 112RP is a true game changer. It is the most versatile ski ever built. It combines the loose and early planing feel of a fully rockered ski with aggressive sidecut and slight camber underfoot. It’s a one ski quiver for planing powder in the morning, laying trenches down to the lift on the groomers, and slaying crud in the afternoon. A 15m radius underfoot and great torsional stiffness allow for maximum versatility, while the rockered and tapered tips and tail allow the Wailer 112RP to get loose and be driven from the ball of the foot in deeper snow.

Cassiar 80The Cassiar 80 is the narrowest ski in your quiver. It’s the dedicated frontside choice for the entire mountain when there isn’t new snow. It’s a thoroughbred carbon all-mountain performer: it rips trenches, cuts crud, dicesmoguls, and does so with more power and edge grip than significantly narrower and heavier skis. The Cassiar 80 is available in Pure: Carbon + Nano construction only.

Women’s skis are traditionally diluted, watered-down ver-sions of their standard counterparts. In the name of weight savings, ski builders typically cannibalize performance by re-moving glass and employing flimsy wood cores. Our Pure and Hybrid Constructions are already ultra-lightweight and infused with unrivaled carbon performance. For our women’s line, we shift core profiles and mounting points to create a ski that is both incredibly easy to ski, and has all the reactivity and power of our bigger thoroughbred chargers—skis built for women rippers—not a market segment.

RitaThe Rita is a truly versatile frontside/backside performer with enough girth to make light storms floatable. It’s ideal for women wanting a go-to, everyday ski for all-mountain use. Pure Carbon Fiber Construction makes the Rita 30 percent lighter than a comparatively shaped women’s ski, yet at the same time 30 percent more powerful.

Pure: Carbon+Nano skis employ the most advanced prepreg nano resins and space age laminates which result in ultimate performance and value. Unlike con-ventional skis that break down over a season, DPS Pure: Carbon+Nano construction maintain the same pop, power, and life after years of hard use.

We don’t fool around with diecuts on the running sur-face that pose durability issues, or colored bases that run slower. On both Hybrid and Pure models, we employ only the finest Austrian high graphite content sintered bases for the best in speed and life.

BLACK BASES INFINITE FLEX LIFE

Precision engineered flex patterns are at the heart of every DPS Ski. Proprietary computer programming technology allows us to generate core profiles that yield skis within 1% of their designed longitudinal flex. Constant on snow testing means constant profile evolution, and prepreg/nano resins mean perfectly matched pairs—the ultimate in longitudinal flex consistency.

FLEX PROFILE COMPARISON

Pure: Carbon+Nano skis have always been ridiculously light and powerful since their inception. Designed for hard snow and crud, S.S. is a patent pending addition that features vertical titinal ribs integrated into the core

structure. S.S. endows Pure skis with superior dampening and the silky smooth feel of a metal laminate ski, while maintaining the power and energy of a pure carbon/nano build–all without add-ing weight. S.S. in a Pure: Carbon+Nano Construction is the best of all worlds. It’s the culmination of four years of carbon/nano ski research–a futuristic ski that combines the three most desired el-ements of ski design without any compromise: ultra-lightweight, silky feel, and power unrivaled by any other ski construction.

Spotlight on DPS Director of Engineering Peter TurnerA successful ski design marks the synergistic integration of carbon composites, shaping, and precision flex profiles. Peter Turner, Director of Engineering at DPS, is the face behind DPS’ technical design.

Peter started his career at Hanson boots in the 1970’s, then as a mechanical engineer at Hexcel Composites—where he built his own quiver of carbon fiber windsurfers. He then worked as the product development engineering manager at Rock Shox. Peter then settled-in as Volant’s head of research and development, where during the 1990’s, he was instrumental in developing steel ski construction and precision ski design code for a long list of award-winning skis. At Volant, Peter worked with Shane McConkey to engineer and build the groundbreaking Spatula.

“During my career I have been fortunate to work with people like Shane and now Stephan—creative skiers who have a unique understanding and passion for ski design,” says Peter.

Stephan describes his first encounter with Peter: “The first time I met Peter, the energy and synergy was instant. It was a conversation with not only a highly accomplished engineer and ski designer, but with a passionate, core skier. That’s the magical combination that Peter possesses. It’s rare in the ski world. Within minutes, we were launching into the subtleties of how flex profiles, shaping, and mounting points work together. Peter is a genuine person who breathes skiing, and feeds off the energy for building innovative tools.”

Once in awhile a ski comes along that breaks boundaries and becomes the new standard. The Wailer 112RP was launched in 10/11 and instantly received glowing media reviews—and then blitzed all sales forecasts. For many, it’s a transformational ski—and the most playful ski they’ve ever been on. It’s simply that good.

The Wailer 112RP is a shape to be skied all day both at the resort and in the backcountry. It’s the centerpiece of your quiver, and the new paradigm of versatility. You don’t have to go in for a new ski once the mountain is tracked in the afternoon. The 16m radius underfoot is aggressive. The rocker profile is aggressive. The tip splay is aggressive. There is slight camber underfoot. A unique new flex profile, the 55, was designed especially for the shape.

It’s a shape that changes your approach to the mountain and questions traditional notions about what a ski quiver should consist of. It’s equally at home pulling loaded g’s on packed snow as it is slashing a wave feature or surfing powder making the Wailer 112RP an incredibly versatile all mountain tool. While dynamic on edge, the Wailer 112RP is also especially friendly off edge. In soft snow, the rockered tips and tail allow the pilot to let go and launch into controlled high-speed power slides and carves.

The Wailer 112RP does it all. It’s a game changer

Skiing Magazine Buyer’s Guide 2010“We tested the ultra lightweight Pure construction and were flabber-gasted by its lightness and ease in powder. Designed to be a resort-use powder ski that can carve groomed run-outs, it lives up to its billing. Radically rockered tips plane over powder and deep chop without blink-ing. Light, playful, and easy to steer, it will take you through last chair with leg strength to spare.”

Backcountry Magazine Buyer’s Guide 2010“It’s impressive how this ski crushes all manners of snow conditions, and remains this light.”

Freeskier Magazine Buyer’s Guide 2010“One of the highest rated skis in the entire test, the DPS Wailer 112RP is a ski that everyone can enjoy. Light as a feather and the ultimate pow tool. A surf-like feel that tears apart the entire mountain.”

▸ Stephan Drakein Engelberg.

Sometimes we are asked what we mean by ‘beyond faceshots’. People say, “Isn’t a faceshot the pinnacle powder experience—what could be better?”

It started about ten years ago when skis began to rise on a true plane in deep powder. Almost overnight, a new realm was born outside of the fall line. With the right combination of shaping, rocker, and flex patterns, the ‘bobbing up-and-down, with major un-weighting’ days of skiing were officially over. Ascendant levels of creativity were suddenly possible, and skiing became a more aesthetic art. Our souls were exposed to otherworldly sensations of levitation combined with strong g-forces. In a heartbeat, wave features, dramatic slides, and carves were magically introduced to the deep snow menu. When you feel your first authentic planing run on a Lotus 138, you experience a sensation that will stay with you your entire life.

The traditional faceshot is a function of excessive downward weighting, which is a function of excessive up weighting (i.e. bobbing up and down). Both are inefficient movements born from too much drag and too little flotation. Somehow, even in 2011, ski magazines and movies still feature photos of upright skiers with their tips plunging beneath the snow. That’s passé. Henceforth, consider viewing powder photos and videos with a critical eye. If there isn’t a very distinct, reeling line of spray coming off the skier’s downhill ski, or if the spray ends just a few feet behind the body—you are looking at either poor skiing, or poor skis.

If a lack of snow hitting your face is discouraging, there is another way to get a faceshot while surfing powder. It’s achieved as a result of powering your downhill ski so hard while crossing the fall line that it sends a reeling, triple—overhead spray in front of you. You can then ski naturally into the hanging plume and blind yourself. Alternatively, you can have your friend throw snow on your face before walking into the bar for après. For the traditionalists, don’t fret: if you are feeling nostalgic, you can still slow down, and bob-up-and-down like the old days—even on the new shapes.

Like any major paradigm shift, it’s taken time for people to accept a realm beyond faceshots. While there is no question that plowing through and beneath snow is more fun than 99 percent of life’s activities, it’s also a mark of inefficiency and wasted energy. ‘Beyond faceshots’ literally means surfing on top of low density snow. It means high edge angles and planing, powerful trips across the fall line, and a style of charging where your tips hover right on or above the snow’s surface.

Life is always better in deep snow. But with the continued evolution of progressively shaped skis, a new frontier has arrived. And with it comes expanded exhilaration and new possibilities.
