Welcome

We are excited for the opportunity to guide you through our unique process of learning Spanish. As part of this journey, you will learn Spanish culture and experience the unique history of Granada through a variety of diffe-rent excursions. You will be immersed in what it means to be Spanish.

We are honored that our students have consistently shared through countless testimonials that CastiLa is the best school in Granada in which to study Spanish.

We look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Antonio Perales CastroFounder of CastiLa

We are a language institute dedicated to teaching Spanish to foreigners since 1988.

How will I learn Spanish? How many students will there be in class? Will I study at the

right level? Where will I live? What will I do after the lessons?

Learning a language is a very complex task and every detail is very important when you

are in a different country.

Since 1988 the CastiLa staff have been researching and working carefully to make your

Spanish experience more productive and comfortable. We have organized everything from

your arrival, to your accommodations, your lessons, and possible social activities - making

your experience as enjoyable as possible.

How do you choose a Spanish school?

Why CastiLa? Since 1988 Castila students have highlighted these 6 differences:

1. Maximum of 6 students per class

2. Located in a carmen in the Albaicín, with beautiful views of the Alhambra,

Generalife and Sierra Nevada

3. 6 language levels divided into 36 weekly programs

4. 54 different social and cultural activities accompanied by teachers

after school hours

5. 98% of our students have passed the DELE exam

6. The best accomodations at a maximum of 15 minutes walk away from the school

N.B.1 World Heritage Site by UNESCO: Alhambra, Generalife y Albaicín de Granada: "The

residential district of the Albaicín is a rich repository of Moorish vernacular architecture,

into which the traditional Andalusian architecture blends harmoniously."

Why CastiLa? 6 differences

Granada The beautiful city of Granada is situated between the mountains and the sea. A half an hour to the east is the Sierra Nevada National Park and some of the best ski slopes in Spain. A half an hour to the south is the Costa Tropical, Spain’s lush coastal region with warm Mediterranean waters, great beaches, and endless orchards of avocados, mangos, and papayas. Granada is the city of the Alhambra and the Generalife, the most visited monuments in Spain. Granada is also home to the Albaicin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most unique neighborhoods in the world.

The Albaicín Apart from its historical significance, perhaps some of the most interesting aspects of the Albaicin are that it maintains its customs, traditional atmosphere, narrow streets, and the beauty of its Carmens (walled estates). From the Albaicin you will experience spectacular views of the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Walking through the narrow streets you will come upon quaint plazas, bustling markets full of color, and kind people…. The Albaicin is like a small town in the centre of a cosmopolitan city. The prestigious writer, Antonio Gala, once said, “it was just as beautiful to look at the Albaicin from the Alhambra as it was to look at the Alhambra from the Albaicin”. In 1995 UNESCO designated the Albaicin as a World Heritage Site.

CastiLa CastiLa has been situated in the heart of the Albaicin, since 1988, in the “Carmen de los Gatos” (Carmen of the Cats). Our location is part of our commitment to share the Spanish experience in this traditional setting, offering the combination of language, culture, and Spanish customs. The “Carmen of the Cats” is a detached estate with a garden, orange trees, fig trees, loquat trees, and views of the Alhambra, Generalife, and the Sierra Nevada. The word Carmen comes from the Arabic “Al karm” meaning "vineyard" or "vegetable garden" which was an earthly paradise for the Arabs of Al-Andalus. Granada is known as the city of Carmens.

The activities After class activities are a fundamental part of the teaching-learning experience at CastiLa. We are focused on combining classes, practice, and cultural experience. We design opportunities to continue speaking Spanish outside of the classroom through such activities as:

- tapas tours around Granada- cultural visits- grape harvests- movie nights- flamenco- parties- games

- olive picking- soccer matches- salsa dancing - making traditional ceramics- cooking paella- excursiones to the mountains and beaches

- skiing- concerts- bullfights- visits to museums- barbeques- theatre- historic tours

Methodology In order to determine the appropriate learning level and needs of each student, all students of CastiLa have a personal interview with a professor and take a written and oral exam. According to the results of the tests and the number of weeks of classes each student wants to attend, the teachers propose a learning plan with course objectives. We believe that it’s important for our students to have a clear vision of the path he or she wants to take. The classes are interactive and all the necessary teaching elements are provided (books, videos, audio, etc). Read more on the backpage

Accommodation CastiLa offers carefully selected lodging for its students. At CastiLa, we understand that good accommodation is essential to make one´s stay pleasant. During the past several decades, we have worked towards this objective of having the best and most reasonable accommodation for our students in Granada. The students can choose

between 5 housing options:

Individual apartments For students who want to enjoy complete independence, we offer high-end luxury apartments that are located very close to the school.

Shared apartments Shared apartment with other students. This is the most popular option. Favours community living and contact with other students. More independence than living with a family.

Spanish Families Recommended for those that want a total immersion experience in Spanish language and culture, furthermore, as an additional benefit, enjoyment of Andalucian and Spanish cuisine.

Hotel, Hostel, Youth Hostel CastiLa has contacts with various hotels and other accommodation services in Granada. These arrangements are available to students of CastiLa and can be organized by our staff at the student's request.

Residence Accommodation option organised by CastiLa: Single or double rooms, mostly with private bathrooms. A live-in residence administrator is available to attend to the students.

The Teachers All our teachers are native Spanish speakers with two basic requirements: they have the highest university qualifications and they have specific training in teaching Spanish as a second language. The teachers are, without a doubt, the most valuable part of CastiLa. In questionnaires and comments the students consistently emphasize our teachers’ enthusiasm, competence, and commitment to enjoy and share the intricacies of the Spanish language. Many of our teachers have been with CastiLa for more than 10 years.

“I ordered a coffee, and do you know what they gave me?”

A middle-aged English student explained to his professor why he had decided to continue learning Spanish. He told the story that when he began to learn Spanish, he took a trip to Spain by car. “During the journey I made a stop in a bar along the motorway and ordered a coffee with cream. Do you know what they gave me? “ “Well, no, what did they give you?” the professor asked expecting to hear a humorous misunderstanding or error. “Well, they gave me ….. a coffee with cream.” The anecdote was told by a student to his professor, Jose Antonio (IC London), and it seems to demonstrate clearly that what excited this student was that language is a tool to obtain objectives and … in his case, enjoy coffee with cream. Now, this student wanted more tools so that he could obtain more objectives with language.1

At Castila, we are convinced that language is the most effective and important of the social abilities, and that learning a language is like gaining a dictionary of communicative capacities, a conglomeration of precision and style in the function of personal necessity.
