in 1991, dorothee and alexander grisar imported their first hammocks to germany. they had the vision to keep the traditional handicraft production of the hammock village San Sebastián in

el Salvador alive and to make latin american hammock culture known to a wider public in europe. our continuously increasing demands on product quality and design have made us one of europe‘s leading suppliers for top-quality ham-mocks and hammock chairs over the past 20 years. as a family-operated business in its second generation we are very much aware of our responsibility for society and nature. a long-term relationship with our suppliers from our main countries of purchase, Colombia, Brazil and india, provides the basis for sustainable business. in order to consolidate and standardise our sustainability initiatives, we co-operate with organisations specialising in that field, such as Made-By, textile exchange and the Forest Stewardship Council. More than ever, hammocks can be found in different areas of the home: as an indoors or outdoors meeting point for the family, as playground or safe haven in babies‘ or childrens‘ rooms, as decorative accessory for cottages or as travel utensil for weekenders and globe-trotters alike. the variety of hammocks and their usage is also reflected in the new structure of our range. in addition to strengthening our core range in the area of classic, latin american hammocks, we will now launch special product solutions for babies, children and travellers. la SieSta promotes sustainably oriented forestry, taking

into account ecological as well as economical aspects in

order to prevent overexploitation. all our spreader bar

products from South america are FSC-certified.

la SieSta is a member of Made-By, a non-profit

organisation aiming at creating better working and

environmental conditions in the textile industry. once a

year, Made-By audits the ecological and social standards

applied at the production sites of our suppliers. the

results of said audits are then summarised in progress

reports and published as ‚Scorecards‘ on a yearly basis.

investigated the need of

children for stimulations

and sense of balance.

The result is a line of

SWINGING MAKES YOU SMART!The German Federal Association for the Promotion of Posture and Physical Exercise (Bundesar-

beitsgemeinschaft für Haltungs- und Bewegungsförderung e.V. - BAG) was founded by teachers,

physicians and parents in 1961. As a registered non-profit association, the BAG promotes a heal-

thy development of posture and physical exercise in children and youths, thus helping them to

develop their physical, cognitive, emotional and social resources to the fullest extent possible. By

doing so, the BAG tries to counteract the increasing passivity towards exercise (which often results

in abnormalities in posture, obesity and other lifestyle diseases) by offering meaningful exercise

and health concepts that are suitable for children. LA SIESTA talked to Dr. Breithecker of the BAG:

LA SIESTA: You as the head of the Bundesarbeitsge-meinschaft für Haltungs- und Bewegungsförderung e.V. recommend LA SIESTA hammocks. Can you ex-plain what’s behind the motto ‚swinging makes you smart‘?DR. BREITHECKER: Swinging very much like all upward and downward motions provides important stimulation to the sense of balance which is situated in the inner ear. Of course this does not warrant a higher degree of intelligence. But modern brain research proves that those kinds of activities, especially if engaged at an

early age, provide important stimulation to the deve-lopment of the brain and the circuitry and preserva-

tion of neuronal structures in particular. They im-prove the metabolic environment in general and

provide for a better level of cerebral adaptation and processing.

LA SIESTA: Apart from the cerebral develop-ment, which physical developments are supported by

using hammocks for children? DR. BREITHECKER: Evidently, children need to be able to perform many basic tasks like climbing, jumping, ba-lancing etc. on a daily basis in order to secure a healthy development of the body. But in particular the sense of balance as well as the spontaneous contractions and relaxations of the musculature that are stimulated by swinging have complex impacts on all the muscle and motion sensors positioned in our body, thus providing a positive influence to body perception and the aware-ness for posture.

LA SIESTA: Beside the obvious mental and physical importance for the development of children, what kind of help can hammocks provide for grown-ups, e.g. in case of back pain? DR. BREITHECKER: Obviously our widespread disease no. 1 can not be eliminated solely by performing gentle swinging motions. The reasons behind back aches are simply too complex. However, if you consider that

one of the main reasons for back aches are related to socialization-related stress which entails muscle ten-seness, swinging can be very useful in regaining your ‘inner balance’. Individuals continuously strive for this ‘inner balance’ to feel good. In this context, scientists speak of “homeostatis” which describes the human’s nature to actively seek constant conditions. Homeosta-tis not only describes physiological acts of adaptation, such as increasing blood pressure and heart rate when climbing stairs, but also a self-regulated balance of mind and psyche. Gentle, individually adapted, vestibu-lar stimuli (stimuli concerning the organ of equilibrium) create a sense of well-being, support the reduction of stress and promote muscular relaxation.

LA SIESTA: Hammock chairs offer movement and com-fort at the same time. What are the benefits of ham-mock chairs when compared to conventional seating? DR. BREITHECKER: Human beings are meant to move, i.e. it is best to sit as little as possible. This is hardly rea-listic these days as more and more activities take place in a seated position. Which is why we recommend ‚lively sitting‘. It means that we need seating that enables us to perform a change of the seating position spontane-ously. Similar to free standing this means: The next sit-ting posture is always the best. A good seating solution means that chair and animate functions of a complex organism constitute a system. The chair and its seating surface in particular adapt to the natural wishes of the body and stabilises itself automatically concerning the seating angle the body prefers or which is demanded by the tasks at hand.

LA SIESTA: Our LA SIESTA baby hammocks are known to calm down even really fussy babies. An increasing number of children are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder today. Can hammocks, among other means, be used therapeutically in this field? Which approaches do you see and are there sci-entifically proven results to confirm them?

DR. BREITHECKER: Especially parents know from their experience how much restless and ‚stressed‘ toddlers enjoy being rocked into relaxation. Even though the causes for and methods of the treatment of children with ADHD are very complex and debated controver-sially, we see time after time that individually admini-stered stimuli to the sense of balance have an enor-mous effect on children suffering from ADHD. Their everyday life shows us that they are continuously trying to provide their sense of balance with stimuli, for exa-mple by rocking their chairs backwards and forwards. One way of explaining that behaviour is that this action releases special messenger substances (among others dopamine) which are present in the organisms of this specific target group in too low concentrations.

LA SIESTA: Dr. Breithecker, do you have a hammock at home? How do you provide your body with physical and mental fitness and relaxation?DR. BREITHECKER: Yes, I do own a hammock and it is a substantial part of my individual rhythm of tension and relaxation. Using the hammock for mental relaxation as well as regular, moderate endurance exercises are im-portant ways to compensate for my everyday life that is very much dominated by mental activity and travel.
