How do solar panels work?At its most basic, solar panels consist of an array of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity by a process known as the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic or PV cells consist of at least two semi-conductive materials, such as silicon, one of which has a positive charge while the other is negative. When exposed to sunlight some of the photons are absorbed by the negative semiconductor atoms (at the bottom), which in turn free electrons to flow (if connected to an electrical load) back to the positive semiconductor (at the top). This flow of electrons is called direct current (DC).

The individual solar cells are then con-nected in series strings to build voltage; the strings are connected in parallel to build current. They are then sealed or laminated and placed in a rigid frame. This makes up a photovoltaic (PV) module. These solar modules or panels are available in various sizes, power outputs, and materials. Solar PV Therm The PVTherm unit interfaces photovoltaic panels to a standard geyser with AC elements of 2-3 kW.This will allow the water in the geyser to be efficiently heated with solar panels.

The PV Therm unit is mounted close to the existing DB board in the house, and power is fed from the solar panels to the unit. This DC power is converted to AC and applied to the existing geyser wiring. No modifications are necessary to the geyser circuit and the existing thermostat will still determine the maximum water temperature.

We do however recommend that the system be checked annually to ensure that you are getting the best possible efficiency out of the system.

What is a heat pump?A domestic hot water heat pump is a very efficient water heating device. It uses a small amount of electricity to produce up to four times more heat energy. So by connecting a heat pump to your existing hot water cylinder you can divide your hot water electrical consumption by up to four. Unlike a solar geyser, a heat pump is not directly dependent on the sun and therefore it can operate day and night, winter and summers, ensuring the highest possible saving and piping hot water 24/7
