INTRODUCTION-Catalunya has five World Heritage Sites:

• The Works of Antoni Gaudí

• Palau de la Música and Hospital de Sant Pau

• Poblet Monastery

• Archaelogical Ensemble of Tárraco

• Catalan Romanics Churches of Vall de Boí

WORKS OF ANTONI GAUDÍ

Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus in the 1852. It’s the most important modernist architect in Catalunya.

The seven works which figure in the World Heritage list are:• Parc Güell

• Palau Güell

• Casa Milà (or Pedrera)

• Casa Vicens

• Sagrada Familia

• Casa Batllò

• Crypt of the Colonia Güell

All his works were accepted in the

UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1984 and

2005

Palau Güell: constructed between 1886 and 1890. One of the first important works by Gaudí.

Casa Vicens: constructed in 1888 in Passeig de Gràcia. Gaudí’s first major commision and the first house he ever builds.

Park Güell: It was constructed between 1900 and 1914. This work shows the natural epoque of Gaudí (first decade of 20th century).

Crypt of Colonia Güell: One of the works commissioned by Eusebio Güell. The constructions began in 1908 and was finished in 1915 with only the construction of the lower part, because the Güell family stopped borrowing money to Gaudí.

Sagrada Familia: The most iconic temple of Gaudí in Barcelona. It remains unfinished because Gaudí died before ending its building. The construction began at 1882 and Gaudi got involved in 1883.

Casa Milà (or Pedrera) and Casa Batllò: Both in the Passeig de Gracia, the Pedrera was constructed between 1906 and 1910 while the Casa Batllò was build between 1904 and 1906.

Palau de la Música and Hospital de Sant Pau

Lluís Domènech i Montaner, born in 1850 in Barcelona and died in 1923. It was a big influence in the «Modernisme Català» movement.

Palau de la Música was built between 1905 and 1908 as a home for the Orfeó Català, is an iconic construction of the Catalan Art Nouveau. The building is designed around a central metal structure covered in glass.

Hospital de Sant Pau: It was constructed between 1901 and 1930 and it was a fully functioning hospital until 2009, year where it began a process of restoration for being used as a museum and cultural center.

Poblet Monastery

The Poblet Monastery is located in Vimbodí, Tarragona; it is one of the most complete Cistercian abbeys in the world. It has been a world heritage site since 1991.

This includes a fortified royal residence as well as the pantheon of the kings and queens of Catalonia and Aragón.

Archaelogical Ensemble of Tárraco

The city of Tárraco was the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. We can say that it was an important Roman city by the fact that it has an Amphitheatre, a Theatre and a Circus, which only had the most important cities of the Empire.

The ensemble has 14 protected sites like the aqueduct or the roman walls. It was declared World Heritage Site in 2000

Catalan Romanesque Churches of the Vall de Boí

The Churches of the Vall de Boí are a group of nine early Romanesque churches named World Heritage Site in the 2000.

The painting of the Virgin at Santa Maria de Taüll it’s also kept in the MNAC.
