Over the past two years I, along with other Oregon Coast Commu-nity College employees, have hosted local radio shows. These shows broadcast up and down the coast, inland, and even into the “cloud,” as podcasts to be retrieved by any online listener.

If you do not believe in the relativity of time, host a half-hour radio show by yourself and time passes quite slowly. But if you add a guest the time passes incredibly fast. Students as well as community professionals have shared about their OCCC experiences. Their re-sponse to the invitation is typically an enthusiastic

“Sure, I’ll be on the show!” During these interviews, common

themes emerge about their OCCC experiences. One shared experience is “being nervous over the first few days.” This feeling is soon replaced by, “I wasn’t nervous anymore,” and “During the week, I’d see the same students and instructors.”

This transformation is evidence of the positive and embracing learning environment present at OCCC. Credit established students for being inclusive

and engaging with new faces on-campus. Also, credit the instructors and staff for building posi-tive relationships that support student endeavors.

One guest shared that his OCCC experience started 18 years after high school and that he wants to be a positive role model for his daugh-ter. Imagine the degree of nervousness that this individual experienced on his first day of class. Now he’s only two terms away from completing a degree at OCCC and being that role model of persistence! What a huge accomplishment. If you know an OCCC student, give that person an en-couraging word about completing their course of study. That endorsement is a vote of confidence.

Hope to see you on-campus soon.

Exploring Oregon’s Marine Intertidal Environment

The dynamic environment known as the intertidal zone holds many surprises for those who take the time to explore the harsh marine habitat that is both covered with water as well as exposed to air. The class begins the evening before the field trip with an indoor orientation session. The orientation takes place in the college’s Aquarium Science building (New-port). Participants will then meet the following morning at a local site. Participants must be able to walk across uneven surfaces for an extended period of time, bend and kneel. Proper attire includes clothing that could get wet, and all-weather, non-skid footwear.

Each participant will com-plete a field trip waiver form. Proceeds benefit student suc-cess programs at OCCC. Limit of 20 individuals.

See you on the beach!

OCCC grad returns to campus

Paul Robertson works as the Lake Manager for the Devils Lake Water Improvement District, and is responsible for (among other things) the regular monitoring of, and protection of, the water quality of the lake.

Robertson has a long list of educational accomplishments to his credit, including a master’s degree in environmental science from Imperial College London.

Before crossing the Atlantic for graduate school, though, Robertson got his start right here at Oregon Coast Community College, where the Taft High School graduate earned two associate’s degrees.

Earlier this year, the Devils Lake Water Improvement District moved into the North Campus of OCCC, at 3788 SE High School Drive in Lincoln City. On campus, the District has ready access to the college’s new science lab. During the spring and summer, when the District conducts periodic water testing from Devils Lake, the public will be invited into the lab to watch and ask questions of this accomplished OCCC Shark.

Small Business Management

Apply now for 2014/15 SBM & iSBM programs to start in October, 2014The Small Business Management Program features one classroom session each month over the course of one academic year, plus monthly one-on-one counseling sessions, and much more!

What gets you up in the morning? What keeps you up at night? How would you like to have your own personal business consultant

to meet with every month? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to pick up the phone or e-mail someone whenever you had an inspiration, or a challenging business question?

For almost two decades, the Oregon Coast Commu-nity College’s Small Business Development Center has offered a powerful Small Business Man-agement Program, which can help you with:

MONeY MANAGeMeNT• Determine the exact level of sales that you will need to be profitable and pay for new assets, pay existing loans and make a living. • Read financial statements, and master the 25 key words that will make you sound like you have an MBA.• Track two expense percentages which are critical to your busi-ness’ success.

• Use spreadsheets and QuickBooks to help run your business to achieve positive cash flow.

MARkeTING• Know the answer to the question, “Why should I choose you?” by developing your Unique Value Proposi-tion.• Build customer trust and loyalty... and, while you’re at it, a better community for Lincoln County.

During your year in the SBM program, you’ll also learn how to use the latest tools to build a team – consisting of your employees or a network of independent contractors – so you can offer the highest value, the best price and the lowest cost to your steady customers.

Over the course of a three-term academic year, our participants receive:• Ten one-to-one, two-hour meetings with an SBDC advisor• Meetings with an informal support group of a number of other SBM participants• Nine SBM classes, plus access to more than a dozen additional sessions or workshops attended by your business peers.

The SBM program is open to existing businesses. Pick the one that’s right for you! Our new isBM program features in-depth technology-focused classroom instruction, and one-on-one counseling opportu-nities, along with traditional business education content. Led by Misty Lambrecht and Ron Spisso, the iSBM is the latest iteration of this powerful, cutting edge business education program, covering such topics as website design, search engine optimization and social media.

The cost of the program is $900 a year. All small businesses will qualify for one or more local, state or national scholarships that typically bring the yearly cost down to between zero dollars and $600, depending on funding from our sponsors. To apply to enroll in the SBM program, with or without financial aid, contact the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College, at 541-994-4166 or 541-487-4855, or visit oregoncoastbusiness.com.

Business scholarships available Many business owners don’t realize they are eligible for 100% tuition assistance

for many SBDC programs. This year, Lincoln City businesses located within the city’s Urban Renewal District are eligible for 100% tuition assistance for one business class or program per term, thanks to a generous Economic Development Grant.

THIS INCLUDES THE YEAR-LONG SBM PROGRAM! (See above.)

All over the county, thousands

of residents – and many small business owners – qualify as “low” or “moderate” income earners. Many don’t realize that many of their neighbors, as well as their own families, may fit these criteria, and would be eligible for no-cost services from the SBDC for some of its most popular classes and programs.

Are you eligible? Call 541-994-4166 to find out.

“i bought the business in may of last

year with very little in the bank. Thanks to the sBm Program, i did not starve. instead, i completed all my tasks and was able to to pay my bills ... ron guided me in my strate-gies, and it’s still working. what did i take away from the sBm? a vision for the future, one i would not have if i was not shown ‘how it all works,’ and how to stay in business when every part of your being says you won’t. i will succeed – i know that now!”

Business LawThis Spring, the Oregon Coast SBDC is proud to deliver

brand-new business law courses to business owners throughout Lincoln County. Held live on the Newport campus of Oregon Coast Community College, these two sessions will be simulcast live via two-way videoconference to the Lincoln City campus, allowing business owners from all over the Central Coast to par-ticipate, ask questions and interact with the instructor. The two courses will be led by Richard Huntpalmer, an attorney recently relocated to the Oregon Coast. Huntpalmer’s wife, Bryn, is the new development director of the College.

Below are the tentative agendas for these two sessions. The instructor, however, plans to tailor course content to the registrants’ needs. When you register online, at www.oregoncoastbusiness.com, you can complete a brief survey request-ing that certain topics be covered.

Session One: Business Formation

This workshop/course is a practical introduction to business formation. For entrepreneurs needing to know how to protect themselves and their business from potential liability, to seasoned business own-ers needing to review their operations, this course will provide concrete examples and guidance for all. Students will learn to distinguish between various for-profit and non-profit corpo-rate entities to help them understand which formation can best help them achieve their goals. With a look to future business operations, the course will briefly discuss contract formation and agency.

Session Two: Agency & Independent Contractor Law

Is your independent contractor actually your employee? Will your independent contractor or employee create liability for you or your business? This workshop, designed for employers and independent contractors, will help students understand their potential liability in various contexts by understanding basic legal principals and the tests BOLI commonly uses to distinguish busi-ness relationships. Additionally, students, with guidance from the instructor, will examine basic contracts and business practices to help them achieve their goals.

“‘Profit Mastery’ sounds like another exciting business course, doesn’t it? I took the course be-cause it was recommended to me by the SBDC, and they have never steered me wrong. I was once again pleasantly surprised. We are in business for one reason only and that is to make a profit. This course gives you so many tools to keep your business on track and in the black. There is enough infor-mation here that even a seasoned business person will find value in the course yet enough for the beginning entrepreneur to apply its principles right away. I highly recommend it to everyone and send special thanks to Jack and Ruthie for making it available.”
