Step 1: Graphite pencil drawing
The first stage is to draw the image. I am directly drawing it
from a still life set up infront of my easel, but you can use a
photo for reference.
If you are not confident with drawing, you can print out the
image supplied and transfer it onto your Watercolour Paper.
This way you can experiment with painting techniques
without worrying about the layout of the picture.
Step 2: Preparing the painting
Any new paint should be tested on the paper you intend to
use. This enables us to see the true colour and get a feeling
of how the paint reacts on paper and with water. It also
gives us a bit of confidence to start the actual painting.
Fill your Mont Marte Deep Well Palette with a little of each
colour and paint a swatch of each colour on a seperate
piece of paper from the same Watercolour Paper.
Step 3: Painting in the background
Use the Squirrel Mop Brush to drag Green across the
top of the page. Wash off the Brush and dip it in to the
water, then drag this through your previously applied
paint and down the page using horizontal strokes. This
thins the paint and creates a smooth blend. Continue
this down the page adding more water as you go,
leave the table and flowers unpainted.

You can create
highlights by using
a brush or tissue
on wet paint to
soak the pigment up.
It’s also helpful when
you make a mistake!

Step 4: Painting in blocks of colour.
When the background is dry, paint in the top of the table
with a wash of Black. Paint another wash over the shadow
of the vase. Use straight Black to paint the front and side of
the table.
Then paint in the vase in a wash of Blue. Try to vary the
strength of the pigment to create highlights and shadows.
Step 5: Painting the leaves
Build up light coats of Green with a #4 Kolinsky Sable Brush
on the leaves. Then using Brown Tinted Graphite Paint, paint
in the stems and bottle brush.
Use Blue Tinted Graphite Paint on the remaining leaves,
again vary the strength of paint on different leaves to show
depth.
Step 6: Painting the flowers
Paint the flowers with Red. When the Paint is still wet, drop
some Blue in to the centre of each flower to add interest.
Then add spots of pure Red with downward strokes from the
bottom of each dot.
