applicationPhotonStar were invited to supply a low

energy lighting solution for the First &

Business Class Cathay Pacific Passenger

Lounge at Terminal 2, Heathrow Airport. The

brief highlighted key requirements of higher

efficiency levels, reductions in maintenance

and a desire to install LED lighting solutions

all within a design suited to the premium

location.

With the room in use for 19 hours a day,

there was an urgent need to cut down

maintenance levels due to the frequent lamp

replacements being carried out (927 lamps

per year) and the disruption and health &

safety risks this was creating for passengers.

The original installation had utilised a

combination of halogen, CDM discharge

and fluorescent luminaires with a Luxmate

dimming control system. This achieved a

total load of 26kW on an approximate gross

floor area of 977m², giving light levels of

approximately 250 lux and subsequent

efficacy figures of 10.6W/m²/100lx.

PhotonStar supplied a combination of

CeilingStar Trimless, Laser Trimless,

Lightslot and Cordus Trimless fittings to

replace the old luminaires, as well as a new

control system.

The new installation showed a 60%

reduction of the total load at 10.5kW on an

approximate gross floor area of 931m². Lux

levels were increased by 14% to 286 lux,

giving an efficacy improvement of 63% at

3.94W/m²/100lx.

With a projected life expectancy of 50k

hours (to L70) the costly and disruptive

maintenance and lamp changes have been

eliminated for longer than Cathay’s standard

refurbishment period of 5 years. There has

been an annual reduction in maintenance

from 927 replacement lamps at a cost of £9k

( 231 man hours x £40/hour Labour charge)

to zero over the same time period.
