“As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.

A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’

John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him

and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey.

And this is what he proclaimed: ‘One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’”

December 10, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral: It is difficult in our fast paced world and with instanta-neous communications to find time for quiet and rest. In our religious tradition, however, rest is not option. The creation stories of Genesis tell us that on the sev-enth day, the Sabbath, God rested. The day of rest is included in the Ten Commandments as a critical prac-tice as we follow God. The Sabbath is an essential element of our tradition to maintain balance in our lives, to experience renewal, maintain connection with our families and to gather as a Christian Community to celebrate Eucharist. The practice of Sabbatical is rooted in Sabbath rest. Last year I requested a six month Sabbatical. Bishop McGrath granted that request and I will be on Sabbati-cal from January until July of next year. During the first three months I will be participating in a renewal program at the Institute for Continuing Theological Education in Rome. This renewal program draws priests from throughout North America and provides time for study, prayer, and community formation. Fol-lowing my time in Rome I will be staying in Madrid for several months. I will be living at the English speaking parish and working with a Spanish tutor. While I realize I will never be fluent in Spanish I hope to improve my language skills to better be able to serve this diverse community. In my absence Fr. Jeff Fernandez will be administrator of the parish. He is a talented, motivated, and caring priest. I have no concerns regarding his leadership abilities. He will continue to serve the parish well and guide the community with wisdom while I am away. I will be returning to St. Joseph Cathedral as pastor. I am not being reassigned. Know that I will hold the parish in prayer throughout my absence and I ask for your continued intercession. Sincerely, Fr. Joseph M. Benedict, STD Pastor

S aint of the Week Blessed Adolph Kolping (December 8, 1813 – December 4, 1865)

The rise of the factory system in 19th-century Germany brought many single men into cities where they faced new challenges to their faith. Father Adolph Kolping began a ministry to them, hoping that they would not be lost to the Catholic faith, as was happening to workers elsewhere in industrialized Europe. Born in the village of Kerpen, Adolph became a shoemaker at an early age because of his family’s economic situation. Ordained in 1845, he ministered to young workers in Cologne, establishing a choir, which by 1849 had grown into the Young Workmen’s Society. By 1858 there were over 400 workman’s societies around the world. Today this group has over 450,000 members in 54 countries across the globe. More commonly called the Kolping Society, it emphasizes the sanctification of family life and the dignity of labor. Father Kolping worked to improve conditions for workers and greatly assisted those in need. He and St. John Bosco in Turin had similar interests in working with young men in big cities. He told his followers, “The needs of the times will teach you what to do.” Father Kolping once said, “The first thing that a person finds in life and the last to which he holds out his hand, and the most precious that he possess-es, even if he does not realize it, is family life.” Kolping members journeyed to Rome from Europe, America, Afri-ca, Asia, and Oceania, for Father Kolping’s beatification in 1991, the 100th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s revolution-ary encyclical “Rerum Novarum”–“On the Social Order”. Father Kolping’s personal witness and apostolate helped prepare for that encyclical.

Unlike Luke and Matthew, Mark does not include details of Jesus’ birth at the beginning of his Gospel. He begins with the appearance of John the Baptist in the desert. To-day we are invited to reflect upon the role of John the Baptist, who

prepared the way for Jesus and the salvation that he would bring to us. Mark’s description of the appear-ance of John the Baptist highlights John’s continui-ty with the Jewish prophetic tradition. Mark’s de-scription of John as an ascetic, living in the desert, clothed in camel hair, and eating locusts and wild honey, is reminiscent of the description of the pro-phet Elijah found in Second Kings. The people of Judea and Jerusalem flock to him, listening to his message of repentance and forgiveness; they also come to him to be baptized. Mark’s Gospel is clear, however, that John the Baptist’s role is only to pre-pare the way for another who will come, one who is greater than John. Many scholars believe that the Gospels reflect the tension that likely existed be-tween followers of John the Baptist and disciples of Jesus. Each of the four Evangelists report on John’s preaching and baptizing, each emphasizing the im-portance of Jesus’ baptism by John. The four Gos-pels also explain that John was sent to preach in preparation for another. In the Gospel of Luke, the question is raised as to whether John the Baptist was himself the Messiah. Just as in today’s Gospel, however, John speaks quite explicitly that the Mes-siah was to come after him. Today we hear John the Baptist contrast his baptism of repentance with the baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John says that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John’s bap-tism was not yet a Christian baptism, but a prepara-tion for the Sacrament of Baptism through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. John the Baptist is presented to us as a model during Advent. We, too, are called upon to prepare a way for the Lord, to be messengers in ser-vice to one who is greater than we are. Our Baptism commissions us to call others to life as disciples of Jesus. - Loyola Press
