The purpose of this newsletter

is to bring all up to date on

the progress of our campaign.

At this point, a date has not

been established, though the

hopes for breaking ground

this Spring are very high. All

are asked for their prayers and

support to make this vision a

reality and a blessing for the

whole of the Davenport

Diocesan Community!!

When former pastor of Sacred

Heart Cathedral, Msgr. Robert

Gruss, was assigned as

Bishop of the Diocese of

Rapid City, South Dakota,

this opened the Pastor/Rector

position of the Cathedral of

the Diocese of Davenport.

Bishop Martin Amos had

definite plans for the

Cathedral and shared those

plans with Fr. Rich Adam,

then Pastor of the cluster

parishes of Riverside,

Richmond and Wellman.

When Bishop Amos asked Fr.

Adam to be the Pastor/Rector

of Sacred Heart Cathedral, he

had specific requests upon

this assignment, primarily

fine liturgies, good homilies -

and - “there was some

construction that needed to be

done.” Having just finished

two consecutive building

projects at former parishes, it

seemed a pattern was being

established in Fr. Adam’s

priestly career! Bishop Amos

recited particularly needs of:

Additional Bathrooms

Handicapped Entrances

A Gathering Space

Diocesan / Parish Hall

Thus began the incentive for a

capital campaign that not only

included the parish of Sacred

Heart, but the entire diocese.

Fr. Rich Adam began his

assignment August 1st of 2011

and it didn’t take long for him

to realize the needs Bishop

Amos spoke of were real.

Parishioner Mark Miller, of

Bracke, Hayes, Miller, Mahan

Architects, met with Fr. Rich

and shared previous plans for

updating Sacred Heart

Cathedral that had been

ascertained for many years.

Shortly after that meeting,

Mark introduced the present

architectural plans that

seemed to accommodate

Bishop Amos’ requests, to the

tune of $5.5 million which,

with the passing of time, is

now $6 million.

Ray German, a consultant of

BMG Associates, was invited

to assist in the campaign

process, which began in the

Spring of 2013. A cathedral

campaign is a bit unique as it

is more than a parish

campaign, but a campaign for

the entire diocese. Although

Sacred Heart is a parish unto

itself, it is also the home of

the bishop, the seat of the

diocese, the “Cathedral” for

each member of the

Davenport Diocese. It was

ascertained the best way to

introduce and execute such a

campaign should be done in

Fr. Rich says “I’m sure I share the same

enthusiasm as all priests when asked to

take on a campaign of this size - it is the

last thing any priest wants to do. Thus

Jesus’ command ‘to build his Kingdom’

seems to assume various aspects of

‘building’.”

However, Fr. Rich feels that certain

moments of doing a campaign are

heartwarming and that my grandmother,

Anna Sexton, made such a moment for

him. Upon his coming to Sacred Heart

Parish, Anna was one of the oldest, yet

most faithful parishioners at the

Cathedral. When Anna retired as a

bookkeeper, she enjoyed her favorite

career as a cook and housekeeper for the

priests at Sacred Heart Rectory. Her love

for the parish and her faith was as evident

opened the envelope and saw the first

check of $100. Fr. Rich immediately

referenced Mark’s gospel chapter 12 vs.

42 “a poor widow came and put in two

small copper coins, which amount to a

cent.” Living on a very limited income,

Anna’s check represented much more

than $100.

Grandma’s next statement was more

poignant “I just hope and pray that you’ll

have the building completed before I die.”

Well, I’m very sorry that her dream didn’t

come true, as the good Lord called her

home June 10, 2014. But her dream is

shared by many throughout the diocese

and especially for all the parishioners who

knew and loved her.

as the smile on her

face!

Grandma was the

first to put forth her

contribution when

the announcement to

update Sacred Heart

with necessary

improvements was

made in 2013. A

Sunday morning following the

announcement, as I pushed her wheel

chair in for 9 am Mass, she couldn’t wait

to see Fr. Rich. He met Anna in the east

vestibule and she was excited to hand-

deliver an envelope to him. “This is my

contribution to the new building Father.

Oh how I wish it could be much more.”

He said his heart was touched as he

In the Fall of 2013, the east entrance of

Sacred Heart was dismantled, restructured

and rebuilt, taking away a number of

steps and tremendously increasing the

space which created an entrance

welcoming wheelchairs, walkers, funeral

processions and the like, which was more

than cumbersome in prior years.

This new entrance provides a preview of

what is yet to come. Perhaps most noted

in this 1st phase of SHC’s vision is the

blending of the old and the new. Adding

on to the 1891 structure and keeping the

same look and architectural design is the

work of architect Mark Miller.

Without knowing what was added, it

would be hard to tell the 120-year

difference in construction. The gathering

space and new dining hall will have the

same look!

Jim and Diane

Tiedje are life-long

residents of

Davenport and have

been Sacred Heart

Cathedral

parishioners since

1992. Jim very

recently retired from Quad City Bank and

Trust where he served as Vice President and

Trust Officer for 19 years. Prior to working

at QCBT, Jim was a trust officer at

Davenport Bank and Trust/Norwest

Bank. Both Jim and Diane have been active

in the parish and in the Quad-City

community by serving on several non-profit

boards. Jim served as a parish trustee and

member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral

Finance Council for many years. Jim also

was chairman of the Stewardship

Committee.

As the calendar year turns to

2016, Fr. Rich Adam has

requested two parishioners to

co-chair and give additional

support on our campaign.

Newly retired, Jim Tiedje, and

Jim Collins have readily agreed

to share the fund-raising

responsibilities with Fr. Adam.

A new excitement has come on

board and hopes of gaining a

new momentum and plans for

the New Year.

Jim Collins retired from

John Deere in 2008

following 42 years of

service at both the unit

and the Deere &

Company World

Headquarters levels. At

the time of retirement,

he served the positions

of Director, Corporate

Citizenship Center of Excellence &

President, John Deere Foundation. Jim and

his wife, Karen, are natives of the Quad

Cities and long involved in community

service, business, education and youth

projects towards community

betterment. Currently at Sacred Heart

Cathedral, Jim serves on the Parish Council,

Stewardship Committee, Knights of

Columbus Council # 15254 and as President,

St. Martin de Porres Society.

4. Diocesan Liturgies. Ordinations, the

Chrism Mass, the Rite of Election and

others are all special liturgies held at the

Cathedral. They will be much improved

with more space for the people to gather and

for the priests to prepare, vest, and march in

procession.

As a parishioner with a special interest in

church architecture and the liturgy, I look

forward to the time when our Cathedral can

meet the needs of our present and future

Church.

These are exciting times for Sacred Heart

Cathedral and the Diocese of Davenport. We are

about to embark upon a building project to take

our Cathedral from its 19th century beginnings

into its 21st century future.

Sacred Heart has always accommodated

both parish and diocesan events. However,

in the last few years the building is

showing its age. Some diocesan events

have been moved to other churches. Those

held at the Cathedral are curtailed simply

because the architecture, beautiful though

it is, cannot meet the current needs. So we

need to make some modifications.

How will this current building project

enhance Sacred Heart Cathedral, our

diocesan church home?

1. A More Hospitable Cathedral. At the

Rite of Election during Lent, Catholics

from all corners of the diocese bring their

catechumens to meet the bishop. If you

have attended, you know the difficulty of

parking, climbing steps, hanging up coats,

and even finding an available bathroom.

After such a celebration, there is no good

place to continue the festivities as a

community. When Sacred Heart was

built, this rite was not in use. Now, all these

items urgently need to be addressed. Every

parish and diocesan event will benefit

from improved hospitality.

2. Improved Outreach and Service to

the Diocese. With a large hall attached to

the Cathedral, social events, presentations,

deanery and diocesan meetings,

workshops and conferences can be held

here. Currently Sacred Heart cannot offer

its facilities for these events. With the new

renovation, all this will be possible.

3. Better efforts at evangelization.

Part of the plan for this building project

is lower level meeting rooms. These will

be faith formation classrooms (for both

adults and children). Notably, there will

be large restrooms with separate shower

facilities to allow diocesan retreats such as

CEW and TEC to be hosted at the Cathedral.

Our public buildings are “owned” by the

community – whether it is the Lincoln

Memorial or the local library. Few visit the

library every week, and some only visit

Washington D.C. once in a lifetime. As

Americans, we consider them our own.

When they are run-down, we are embarrassed,

and when they are updated, we take pride in

the accomplishment. In the same way, the

Cathedral is our building, our home parish.

We may not visit it very often, but we take

pride in it nonetheless.
