2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Here I Am, Lord!

With the help of funding from the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests retirement residence, has been a home over the years for a number of our priests. These priests reside there while also serving parishes by celebrating Mass. The Appeal also helps in providing financial support for the extraordinary healthcare needs of our priests. Your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is a concrete way to acknowledge our priests decades of faithful service to our Church. Please make a gift to the Annual Appeal today as a way of showing thanks. For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2018appeal.org.

We welcome home to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist the family and friends of the 21 men from our parish who died in the Great War. It is an honor to have you with us and with the Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, Bishop of Paterson, as we pray for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and

justice. May they never be forgotten. Msgr. Sylva

EVANGELISTS OF PATIENCE “Patience is the companion of wisdom” (St. Augustine of Hippo) If you ask any priest, one of the sins most often confessed is a lack of patience. St. Augustine had said that “patience is the companion of wisdom.” Today, in this hectic world, people long to be treated with patience. Thus, wanting to be wise evangelists—those who invite others home to Christ and His Church—we must be people of patience, most especially, when discussing the faith with those who struggle to hear and believe, maybe even vocalizing their anger against the Church. There is nothing more disarming than patience. Yet, to remain patient requires energy and entails keeping in mind that: We are called to be martyrs for Christ who bear witness to Him; We have to pray for patience; We have to pray for those who anger and frustrate us; We have to remember that we need God to be patient with us; We have to smile; We have to accept that our motives may be misunderstood and, finally; We have to entrust the soul of the other into the hands of God. We evangelists must recognize that our perceived failures may be for God’s glory, for evangelization is not about success in the world’s terms. In this respect, we have to be patient with ourselves. It was not by chance that the first Apostles were fishermen, men who by trade were required to be patient. When we invite others home to the sacramental life of the Church, if we do our best, yet in the eyes of the world we have failed, in the eyes of God it has not been a failure but has been for His purpose which most often remains unknown. May we never lose our passion for inviting others home to the Cathedral Family of St. John the Baptist! May we find courage in the great patience that our God has for each one of us! Msgr. Geno Sylva
