SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT (Pope and Doctor of the Church)

Feast day: September 3 Appearance: Mature man wearing papal robes.

Attributes: Papal tiara, dove of the Holy Spirit, book.

Biographical notes: Born around 450, Gregory became a monk and dedicated himself to the poor. Elected Pope in 590, he was active in works of charity and missions. He contributed to the Roman liturgy and church music (Gregorian chant) and wrote important works of a pastoral, moral, and spiritual character. He died in 604.

Patronage: Invoked against the plague and gout; protector of musicians; singers; makers of ribbon, braid, and buttons; teachers; and popes. Pope and Doctor of the Western Church, Saint Gregory the Great be identified first of all by his papal robes, most often elegant liturgical vestments (chasuble and cope), and the papal tiara (called in Latin the triregnum, it is a three-tiered crown and has been in use since the fourteenth century), which he may wear or have near him. His more personal iconographic attributes, the book and the dove of the Holy Spirit, refer to his position as a Doctor of the Church and to his figure as a scholar and lawmaker, as well as to his numerous written works of a pastoral character recognized as having been divinely inspired. Saint Gregory the Great is often depicted while celebrating Mass in two different situations: when at the moment of the consecration he receives the apparition of the risen Christ (a type known as the Mass of Saint Gregory), who pours blood from his side to fill the chalice or in some other way proves the reality of transubstantiation; and when he prays for the souls in purgatory. This latter image is derived in part from the prayer that Gregory wrote for the soul of the emperor Trajan (who had died five centuries earlier and whose upright life the saint admired) – Gregory fulfilled –and in part from the contribution he made with his writings for the promotion of prayer for the Souls in Purgatory. This image was destined to enjoy great success, beginning in the late sixteenth century.
