ST. NICHOLAS PROJECT NEWS
Aug. 24-Sept. 8: Shoes for St. Nicholas fundraiser. Please
help me buy shoes for the kids for school. I know how
much you love them! Brochures are on the table at the back
of the Church.
You’ve asked me many times for what reasons children get
placed at Kurn Hatin. Here is a story I learned about at a
meeting this summer:
Two sisters are at Kurn Hattin because of a long history of
parental drug addiction and mental illness. They were
being raised by a single parent who also has a younger
child at home with a learning disability. With several
members in the family living under one roof and only one
working adult, a mentally ill spouse, and a learning-
disabled younger child, this family was unable to cope.
Kurn Hattin came to their rescue, and the two girls are
thriving in a safe and secure environment. Your donations
help Kurn Hattin take in children such as these little girls
whose families are unable to take care of them.

JOSEPH HOUSE NEWS
Recently, Joseph’s House has seen an increase in visitors
needing our help and our services. We now find ourselves
often with closed doors after only two weeks of service!
After much prayer, Joseph’s House is developing a new
“Sustaining Donor Program”. Sustaining Donors will be
Mission Partners who commit to donating a set amount of
money, $5, $10, $15 or more, to Joseph’s House each
month. Our goal is to have 100 Sustaining Donors on our
list! Sustaining Donors will receive a Joseph’s House Do-
nor Letter each month with information on programs and
happenings. Will you help us reach our goal of 100 Sus-
taining Donors? For information or to sign-up as a Sustain-
ing donor, please contact Joseph’s House at 113 Elmwood
Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401 or call (802) 951-4290. You
can also email us at [email protected]. Visit us on
Facebook! As always, thank you for your support. Our
service is possible only through your generosity. -Lori

LITURGY OF THE WORD
August 25th—21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 66: 18-21 Outcasts will be gathered home by God as
A precious offering in glory.
Psalm 117: “Go out to all the world & tell the Good News”
Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Discipline strengthens what is weak.
Luke 13:22-30 The doorway into the kingdom is narrow.
Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel that the gate to eternal life is
narrow and many will not get through. However, both
Isaiah and Jesus speak of people from the ends of the earth
being welcomed into the presence of the Lord. We would
do well to remember what God asks of us and then follow
the advice of Hebrews and accept discipline. Let us exercise
the discipline to listen to the word of God and take it to
heart..
September 1st—22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sirach 3:17-18,20, 28-29 Ancient wisdom insists that the
more humble we are, the greater we are.
Psalm 68: “God, in your goodness, you have made a home
for the poor.”
Hebrews 12: 18-19,22-24a Far from frightening, our
encounter with God will be like a glorious holiday.
Luke 14:1, 7-14 Jesus presents His own version of table
manners.
True humility requires that we acknowledge our weakness-
es, our imperfections, our humanness. We are not more im-
portant than our neighbor. Sirach offers this as a lesson to
guide the listener. Jesus tries to teach this to the Pharisees in
the Gospel. Humility begets generosity, as it recognizes the
value in our neighbor, especially those who are put down.
True generosity is shown when giving to those who cannot
repay. (Source: Pastoral Patterns, Spring 2019- World
Library Publications.)
The Cathedral of St. Joseph is pleased to announce the
establishment of a new fund by a parishioner ($50K) in the
Vermont Catholic Community Foundation (VCCF). Fifty
percent of the annual distribution will support the Cathe-
dral parish here in the Diocese of Burlington. We are very
grateful for the generosity of the donors who wish to
remain anonymous.
VCCF was established in 2015 to support apostolic activi-
ties for the Catholic Church in Vermont and help parishes,
schools and other Catholic organizations grow resources
over time to ensure a stable source of income for the
future. Funds in the foundation designated to a specific
purpose can only be distributed for that purpose. Once a
fund is established, a gift of any size can be added.
If you are interested in learning more about how to make a
gift to this Fund or how to establish a fund or make a
planned gift, please contact Ellen Kane, Executive Director
at 802
