Term 1 -Week 7 - 14th March 2018

Catherine McAuley
A parent meeting was held last week to discuss fundraising and social
events for the year. It was great to see the enthusiasm of those parents
present and their desire to engage all members of the McAuley
community in as many events as possible. As a Catholic school we
have an obligation as staff and parents to be a welcoming community
and to reach out to all of our community members whether they be
new arrivals to Orange or long serving citizens. There was also
mention made about the importance and role of Facebook as the main
communication tool in 2018. Mainly because it is instant and
accessible to most.
(As seen on Facebook) two major social events in the pipeline are a
parent gathering at the Parkview Hotel on May 17th (Thursday night)
and the "return" of the Trivia Night on Friday night August 10th.
Fundraising events for the year and the Grades involved in organising
are as follows:
Term 1 Easter Raffle Kindergarten
Athletics BBQ Grades 3 & 4
Term 2 McAuley Social Night (Thursday 17th May) Grade 2
Term 3 Monster Raffle Grade 1
Trivia Night (Friday 10th August)
Term 4 Melbourne Cup Trifecta Grades 5 & 6

FOCUS FOR THE FORTNIGHT:
We show respect by being well mannered and courteous to others.
This is an extremely important focus. If we all treat each other how we want to be treated we will have a
fantastic school. It includes using appropriate language, greeting people correctly and using manners. It would
be ideal if this focus permeated our school and was obvious for any visitors, family or friends when they were in
our school.
From the Assistant Principal

Cup.

From the Religious Education Coordinator
Lent: This weekend we celebrate the Fifth Sunday in Lent, and the
beginning of the last week before Holy Week. In the Gospel from St
John, Jesus is focusing on his approaching death. Jesus uses the
powerful image of the grain of wheat, which produces nothing until it is
dropped into the ground, where it dies. His challenge to us this week is
to ‘die’ to our self in order to grow. Maybe this week we could think
about ways of becoming a better version of ourselves by making small
sacrifices for others.
Project Compassion: Thank you so much for your continued support
of Project Compassion this year. Through the resources the children are
able to see just how needy some of the people really are. The money we
raise through Project Compassion gives these people back a sense of
self worth and dignity, educates them in sustainable food production
and enables them to become independent. Please continue to support
your children and encourage them to donate towards this wonderful
cause and pray for the success of Project Compassion once again this
year.
Conversations About Catholics: Due to a limited response to this course, we have decided to postpone it until
next term. If you would like more information about this course please contact me at the school. More details
will be given at a later date in this term.
Holy Week: This year we will celebrate Holy Week on Thursday, 29th March at
12.30pm in our classrooms, where the children will interact with a special
presentation featuring work from all grades. You are very welcome to share this
celebration with us by joining your children in their classrooms at this time. We will
then celebrate the Risen Christ on Easter Tuesday 3rd April at 9.30am in St Joseph’s
Church. As always, you are very welcome to join us in our celebrations.
Wishing you a great week,
God Bless,
Robyn Petty
Lord Jesus, may our lives become beacons of hope and love as we struggle to bring your
life and love to all.
From the Primary Coordinator
STEM
STEM.....What is it to us at Catherine McAuley.?
We are all STEM teachers.
We all teach critical and creative thinking.
We all model and value student learning.
We all value innovation.
We all see greatest engagement when learning for the student is in context, is current, is authentic, is teacher
scaffolded but student driven, is appropriately challenging, is solutions focused, frequently is problem based and has
real world relevance.
STEM does not just include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics……..It’s a mind and skill set that
every discipline within school enhances.... It also includes the areas of creativity, leadership skills, supporting
fellow classmates and making decisions. We all see purpose in setting our students on a successful and meaningful
path for their futures.
This week at our Staff Meeting the staff were asked to perform a number of STEM activities with paper plates. We
as staff learn when we are engaged as well as you can see.

Let’s get ready to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’ on Friday 16 March 2018.
Our school will proudly stand united with schools across Australia on Friday 16 March to mark the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
The NDA provides our school the opportunity to stand together on this important issue and help ignite thoughtful and positive discussions about bullying and ways we can work as a community to address it.
Our school community will be sending a powerful message, along with other Australian schools, that bullying and violence in or outside the classroom, are not okay at any time. Through positive action we can make a real change.
At Catherine McAuley we are dedicated to supporting our students and families. We need to ensure we are providing safe and supportive learning environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence.
We have a number of programs and initiatives in place that counter bullying. These work with both families, students and staff.
On Friday our students will wear a wrist band in support of this day.
