We are open for public Mass, while we recognize that many are eager to return to Mass in our churches, it remains im-portant for those who are el-

derly and otherwise at risk to refrain from returning to public liturgies until it is manifestly safe to do so. All the faithful continue to be dispensed from their Sun-day obligation until further notice. Those who are sick must stay home. Those considered high risk and their caregivers are strongly encouraged to stay home. When coming to Mass it will look differently. Since we will have to sanitize after each service we will be celebrating Mass in the parish hall. This is so that we can make sure all areas are cleaned with ap-propriate cleaner. The pews in the Church can only be cleaned with warm, soapy water and that does not satisfy the CDC regulation. We are also allowed only 33% of capacity. So, we will be offering more Mass times to accommodate this. We will only be able to have 75 people attend Mass at a time. We have a form posted on the website that you can access by going to www.parishsfds.com under the about and contact us tab. The direct link to the form is https://parishsfds.com/covidsurvey . This form will help us schedule ahead of time and keep our oc-cupancy in regulation. We are asking you to please fill this form out and come at the time se-lected. We will be making sure our Parishioners are able to attend and if there is room for others, they will be let in after we have all entered. Mass Time Options – Sing-up required. Daily Masses: Tues. 6:00 pm, Wed. - Fri. 8:00 am Weekend Masses: Saturday 4:00pm & 6:00 pm and Sundays at 8:30 am & 11:00 am The doors will be opened 30 minutes prior to each Mass time and will be locked when we reach full oc-cupancy or when Mass begins, whichever comes first. It is imperative that you keep the time that you have scheduled. If you need to change or update it, please contact the office. Please enter through the Parish Hall doors from the parking lot side, which will be the only entrance avail-able. The doors will be propped open for ease of en-trance. Here are some other changes that you need to know prior to coming to Mass. These are all driven by the Governors guidelines and have been approved by the Bishop:

• Anyone over the age of 2 must wear a mask at all times. If you are not able to wear a mask, please do not plan to come to Mass as you will not be let in with-out one. If you have a child that can’t keep a mask on, they cannot come. • We do have sanitizer, but please bring your own if you have it. • There cannot be any singing. • There will be someone directing you where to sit. We will fill in from front to back to keep social distance guidelines and you can only sit with people within your household. • We will exit from back to front and can’t gather in the parking lot. There will be someone directing you when to leave. • The collection basket will be out under the large crucifix on the wall. Please put your envelope or do-nations in the basket when you arrive. • During Communion –Fr. Bruce will come to each person and give Communion in the hand. You cannot receive by mouth at this time and there will be no Cup. • Staff will be at all Masses, if you have questions please ask one of them. They will be able to assist you should a need or questions arise. Bulletins are available for you to take after mass, it is also available on our parish website. All other re-sources can be found online as well. Some sites are posted on our website as well as the Diocesan web-site at https://owensborodiocese.org/ Bishop Medley has released a statement as well as the guidelines and it can be read on this link: https://owensborodiocese.org/return-to-public-mass/ Fr. Bruce will also not be able to hear confessions during this time. Some have raised the question about the possibility of providing general absolution to the assembly upon resuming public Mass. The Bishop discussed this and has stated that it is not clear that our circumstance would meet the church’s criteria for this act. Catechesis may be made to the faithful re-garding paragraph 1452 of the Catechism on making a perfect Act of Contrition. Please be patient and kind during this transition. It is new to all of us and we will get through it.

Gospel Reading Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus walks on water, and the disciples acknowledge him as the Son of God.

Background on the Gospel Reading By Loyola Press

Today’s Gospel directly follows last week’s account of Jesus feeding a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. For the sake of the crowds, Jesus had postponed his time of solitude. Now, at last, Jesus finds some time for quiet and prayer. He sends his disciples ahead of him by boat, dismisses the crowds, and then withdraws to the mountain to pray. The disciples do not fare well. They struggle to weather the wind and waves, making little progress in their journey. We are reminded of a previous story of Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus calms the seas. This time, however, Jesus does not calm the seas, and the disciples do not express fear un-til they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. In this story it is not the storm that is feared but the sight of Jesus before them, whom they mistake for a ghost. Clues like these suggest that this story is about the disci-ples’ growing understanding of the identity of Jesus. In continuity with last week’s Gospel about the feeding of the multitude, today’s Gospel is also about what the disciples’ faith in Jesus will enable them to do. In last week’s Gospel, when the disciples see the crowds, they ask Jesus to send the crowds away. Jesus turns the situation around, telling the disciples to feed the crowd with the provisions that they have. Both of these Gospels tell us much about ministry. Jesus calls to the disciples and calms their fears. He is not a ghost. The impulsive Peter seeks proof that the person is indeed Jesus. He asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and Jesus grants this request. Peter’s fear and doubt over-take him, however, once he is walking on the water. Jesus reaches out to Peter and saves him. When Jesus and Peter enter the boat, Matthew reports that the wind ceases, and the disciples confess that Jesus is the Son of God. Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples to do the work that Jesus has done. Peter walks on water. The five loaves and two fish feed a multitude of people. The disciples can and will participate in the work of the kingdom of heaven. When Peter fears and doubts the person of Jesus, however, he falters. Peter’s example teaches us that true Christian ministry emerges from the faith that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s only Son.

Worship/Spiritual Life

“Oh you of little faith, why do you doubt?” Today’s Gospel passage about Jesus approaching the apostles walking on the water in stormy weather follows immediately after last Sunday’s Gospel story about thousands of people eating their fill after Jesus takes bread, blesses it, and distributes it the people. After stepping out of the boat to go to Jesus Peter

starts to sink. He pleads to Jesus who lifts him up af-ter chastising him for his lack of faith. It is tempting to be critical of Peter for losing faith in Jesus. But Peter did get out of the boat and step onto the water in vio-lation of all he had experienced during a lifetime of working on the water as a fisherman. That took a

great act of faith. But a single act of faith in Jesus is not sufficient for a true

disciple. We must constantly renew and demonstrate our faith in Jesus as the Incar-nate Word of God and our faith in ourselves as children of God made in his image. As disciples we are

stewards of that faith, responsible for mak-ing it grow and ma-

ture.

Weekly gatherings have begun! If you know of anyone that might be interested, extend a gentle invitation! These sessions are on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm in the St. Jane Frances Religious Education Center.

At this time, due to capacity restrictions on gatherings, we do need to know who will be in attendance so we can plan accordingly. Please contact Zach Ault at [email protected] or 270-442-1923 (ext. 5) with any

questions or to inform us of your participation!

Catholic Architecture & Furnishings—What does it mean? Nearly every detail of a traditional Catholic church building has a precise and rich significance, pointing to important aspects of Catholic faith and practice.

"Visible churches are not simply gathering places but signify and make visible the Church living in this place, the dwelling of God with men reconciled and united in Christ . . . In this 'house of God' the truth and the harmony of the signs that make it up should show Christ to be present and active in this place." (CCC 1180-81)

As The term basilica literally means "House of the King," a fitting title for the house of God since we understand Jesus to be Christ the King, the King of Kings. This basilica form is the plan upon which most of the past seventeen hundred years of church architecture has been based. A church based on such an arrangement will be a rectangle twice as long as its width. Two rows of columns typically run the entire length of the body, separating the aisle from the nave.

Once through the narthex doors, we find ourselves in the main body of the church, called the nave, which is the Latin word for "ship" (from which we get the word "naval"). This is the place where the congregation

sits and is so called because figuratively it represents the "ark of salvation."
