Reflecting on the Gospel In the reading of the Passion of the Lord, Luke tried to underline the mercy of Jesus. When the servant of the high priest was wounded, Jesus reprimanded Peter and healed the wounded man. When Peter denied Jesus three times in the house of the High Priest, he went out and wept bitterly. As he left, Jesus looked straight at Peter as much as to say. “Peter, I forgive you.” What a very consoling attitude! Jesus has a merciful look for all of us. As he died on the cross Jesus has still the strength to say, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” He did not just tell his disciples to forgive those who do them harm, he himself gave them the example. The Evangelist says that after Jesus instituted the Eucharist, the apostles began to squabble amongst themselves to see who was to be the first among them. As Jesus can read their thoughts, he advised them how authority should be lived in the new community. Authority is a service, and to serve is not to decide for others, or to impose one’s ways on them. To serve means to step down and take up last place. Christianity is a religion of love and service. The Gospel of Luke began with Jesus amongst the poorest, the most despised in Israel, the shepherds. He went on to show us Jesus living with publicans, sinners, prostitutes. How, then, would Luke’s Gospel end? Was Jesus dying surrounded by good holy people? No, two poor unhappy people who had done so much evil. He returns to his Father in the company of someone who represents us all. A sinner, won over by his love, the “good thief” who said, “Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.” The Jesus said to him, “Indeed, I promise you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
now, and the results are very satisfying, and the work is very rewarding. We are open on esdays and Thursdays from 1000hrs to 1400hrs. We could do with a few more helpers to serve light refreshments and meals, so that not everyone has to attend every day. Also, of course, there are significant running costs to cover, so donations would be very welcome. One way to donate is to become a 'Friend of the Homeless', which involves a modest annual commitment. With the impending CTIC Winter Night Shelter Scheme, coming in to effect in a few weeks time, inflatable beds and sleeping bags will be needed, so any of those you may have, surplus to requirements, would be gratefully received. Many thanks to those who have helped us so far, and to those who are helping in various ways. For more information, contact Helena, in the Office, or Bernard or Judy on 258097"if you would like to make your donation by cheque, or if you wish to make a regular donation to the Fund by
Standing Order and wish to take advantage of Gift Aid for
A BACKGROUND TO MODERN THEOLOGY Father Michael Morton from St. Winefride’s, Sandbach is running a series of talks on 21st 7:30pm at St. Gabriel’s, Alsager; 28
th February 7:30pm at St. Anne’s, Nantwich and 7th March 7:30pm at St. Mary’s Primary School. These talks will explore the changes in theological thinking that have taken place in the 19th and 20th centuries – a period of radical political, economic and social change that has impacted enormously on the moral landscape of our times. Full details can be found on the noticeboards ‐ flyers are also on the table in the porch.
FROM THE PRESBYTERY As we enter Holy Week the Church offers much to feed our spiritual lives. On Holy Thursday we gather as a community to celebrate the Eucharist and our service to the Lord Jesus Christ in this great parish community. On Good Friday our Passion Play commences in church at 10:45am and moves into the Town Centre to tell this great story. We gather that afternoon at 3pm for the moving celebration of the Passion. The collection taken up at the end of the service is for the preservation of the Holy Places (many of which have suffered the destruction of terrorists). The Sacraments are not celebrated during the daytime on Holy Saturday as we remember our Lord’s time in the tomb. The Great Easter Vigil on Saturday evening heralds the start of the Easter Season and the blessing of the new Easter Fire. Please do all you can to join in the events of this Holy Week. With every prayer and blessing for the week ahead. Father Jerome (Parish Priest) FINANCES Thank you for your contributions to the Offertory last weekend which raised approx. £1561.97. This includes those offerings made by standing order. GOOD FRIDAY PASSION PLAY Many thanks to those who have helped with our Passion Play. The next rehearsal is at Saint Peter's this Sunday at 3pm. Thank you for your amazing generosity! PETITION ASYLUM SEEKERS AND THE RIGHT TO WORK CSAN (CARITAS SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK) Many people are unaware that asylum seekers are prohibited by law from working. As it currently stands, more than 3,600 asylum seekers have been waiting more than six months for an initial decision on their cases and surviving on just over £5 a day. CSAN is supporting Lord Alton of Liverpool’s amendment to the Immigration Bill that is currently going through Parliament. This would grant asylum seekers, who have not had their claim for asylum processed within six months, the right to work. CSAN is keen to ensure this amendment is upheld in the House of Commons. Catholic Social Teaching encourages us to focus on the dignity of migrants during the asylum process. The Church recognises the importance of work as an important human need and duty. We use work to express our personality and form relationships which help our self‐esteem and mental health. The Church also teaches that allowing migrants to contribute to their new country through work better facilitates their integration into society. We are urging parishioners, supporters and members to write to Edward Timpson or their local MP ahead of the Bill’s return to the House of Commons (expected towards the end of March ‐ beginning of April) asking them to support the amendment. To help, a pro‐forma letter is available from the table in the porch which you can adapt. LATH NEWS Your support for our Grand Spring Concert on Saturday 16
