Message from the Bishop

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,

Another year has passed since the establishment of The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck. Even though our nation’s economy has experienced some further ups and downs, your continued generosity to our beloved Catholic Church has continued and in many ways increased at the same time.

When you read this current Annual Report on the activity of The Catholic Foundation you will see that we have tried to be very careful and very good stewards of your generous financial gifts to the Diocese, to your parishes and to our Catholic schools and other Catholic institutions. Because of your financial support and especially your continued prayers, our Church is able to continue the very apostolates of charity, education and service which Our Lord demands of each of us. You are bringing Him literally to thousands of children, young people and adults so that He can grant His mercy to all who need Him.

The future of our Catholic Church in the Diocese of Bismarck is filled with hope and joy because of you. Your prayers, your good works of mercy and charity, and all of your kind and continued prayers humble me as your Bishop. Our good and holy priests, deacons and religious women and men in our Diocese experience your goodness daily and in my own name and theirs, I thank you and I thank Almighty God for you! My priorities for our Diocese remain vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, Catholic school and parish religious education, an increase in the physical charity we are able to offer to those most in need, and the further strengthening and support for true marriage and family life and the preparation for them.

Again, I can only say thank you and put my thanks into daily prayers for you and all whom you love and hold dear.

Gratefully yours in Christ Jesus,

Most Reverend David D. Kagan Bishop of Bismarck

Dear Friends,

“The Blessings Continue” - that seems to be a phrase that has gained some notoriety around our diocese this past year. You will see it again in the story, “The Path to the Priesthood,” that is the centerpiece of this annual report. This article documents the continued, dramatic increase in young men studying for the priesthood in our diocese and where they currently are on their journey.

As wonderful as this is, it is not the only blessing, but just one of so many our diocese can be grateful for. As we, the Board of Directors of the Foundation, look back on the past year, we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here in western North Dakota with all the faithful Catholics that make this diocese exceptional.

We are blessed with our Bishop and all the clergy that lead us through our religious life on a daily basis. The growth in our Catholic schools, an increase of sisters in Williston, Mandan, and Ft. Yates, our mission in Kenya, Family & Respect Life Ministries, just to name a few, are a testimony to how God is working through the Catholic Church to positively affect all people within the circumference of the Bismarck Diocese.

Your Foundation is a tremendous blessing as it continues to grow, because all of you across the diocese recognize its role in supporting so many Catholic ministries. Individual Parish Endowments are increasing, the Seminarian Scholarship Fund is growing, Catholic Schools and Religious Education, and Priests’ Care Endowment, as well. The increasing number of Named (Family) Endowments is encouraging to see, as more and more people recognize their families and honor loved ones with their own endowment to support the vision of the Bismarck Diocese.

Because of this growth, your Foundation can support all of these ministries in a more meaningful and sustainable way, however, without the thoughtful generosity of all of you, none of this is possible. So thank you for allowing us to administer The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck on your behalf as we work to “Ensure the faith for generations to come.”

May God bless you and your loved ones each and every day.

We encourage you to visit our website at CatholicFoundationDOB.com or call our offices at 701-204-7206. We are happy to assist you in any way possible.

Sincerely, Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck

In August of 2013, Reverend Monsignor Gerald James Walsh of the Bismarck Diocese felt led to establish the St. John Vianney Endowment Fund for Priests’ Care through the Catholic Foundation. Close to his heart was the desire to ensure that retired priests of the diocese would have their needs met, with an emphasis on the upkeep of Emmaus Place (local retirement home for priests). By creating this Named Endowment, Msgr. Walsh has left a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of Bismarck Diocese priests.

Monsignor Gerald Walsh was born on May 4, 1928 in rural Minot to James Leo and Magdalena Mary (Frost) Walsh. His call to the priesthood eventually led him to serve in several parishes throughout the Diocese of Bismarck, plus key positions such as Vocation Director and Apostolic Administrator. Msgr. Walsh has touched so many individuals, families and parishes during his time on this earth until he was called to his heavenly home on September 22, 2015. Now through the St. John Vianney Endowment Fund for Priests’ Care, Msgr. Walsh has left a legacy that will continue to serve the Bismarck Diocese by taking care of priests now and for years to come. And this all comes full-circle, because, through these dedicated men of God, the spiritual needs of the Bismarck people and families are met, and through these families come our future Catholic priests!

By Sonia MullallyDCA Editor The blessings continue as Bishop Kagan has accepted four men to priestly formation for the diocese. Logan Obrigewitch, John Windsor, Grant Dvorak, and Jacob Bennett entered the seminary this fall bringing the total to 28 men studying to be priests for the diocese. Western North Dakota has one of the highest numbers of seminarians per capita in the nation. With this blessing of quantity comes great responsibility of forming quality men into priests. While these four men are starting on their journey, Seminarian Doug Krebs is nearing his goal. Krebs was ordained a transitional deacon in Rome in October, the final step on the path to the priesthood before his ordination in May of 2016 at the Cathedral in Bismarck. He wants the good people of the diocese to know and trust that the men are in good hands in the seminaries that the Bishop has chosen for their path. “When someone gives themselves to God they are being formed into a good person,” Krebs says. “I look back on my six years in the seminary and know that my life has been truly transformed.” Krebs spent his summer on assignment with Fr. David Richter at the parishes of Linton, Hazelton and Braddock before returning to Rome for his final year of formation. Cardinal Dolan came to St. Peter’s Basilica to ordain him and his 60 classmates deacons. He was honored to have a big group of supporters of friends and people of the diocese attend his

ordination. “It’s getting more real, that’s for sure,” Krebs notes. “This was a pivotal moment confirming that we’ve committed the rest of our lives to God and to the priesthood. One of the biggest aspects for me so far has been the friendships I’ve formed with the guys in seminary. Those bonds are strong and it’s great to be welcomed by others you’ve looked up to and have others in formation look up to us.” Seminarian Jake Magnuson is on the opposite end of the path from Doug Krebs, continuing in his second year of formation. He entered the seminary right out of high school, completing his first year (College I) this past year at St. John Paul II Seminary in Washington, D.C. Magnuson spend this past summer living at home with his parents and helping out at his parish—St. Therese, Church of the Little Flower in Minot. “This seminary in D.C. is newer, now in the fifth year of existence, and it’s smaller than most,” Magnuson says. “There are around 50 guys here and I’ve really enjoyed building personal relationships with others since there are so few of us.” He says that being located in Washington, D.C. presents great opportunities for the seminarians to attend special Masses and celebrations, mentioning the March for Life event last winter. “I’ve had the opportunity to develop in spirituality and prayer like never before in my life,” he explains. Seminarian Nick Vetter also attends St. John Paul II Seminary in D.C., a year

ahead of Magnuson. He spent his summer living in residence at the rectory in Linton and helping Fr. David Richter where needed. He also worked on his family farm during the week.

As Vetter continues in the College III level, he says the most rewarding aspect of formation thus far has been his spiritual formation. “Learning different types of prayer, attending daily Mass and making a daily holy hour has brought about so much fruit,” he explains. “This has led me to know Christ as a real person who only wants what is best for the individual.” Vetter has already experienced many exciting things this year including a visit from Pope Francis at the seminary this fall. While the Pope’s visit was certainly a big deal, he’s also excited about strengthening his relationships with God and with others. “I look forward to progressing in my relationship with Jesus Christ and God the Father,” Vetter says. “Along with growing in this relationship, it’s a joy each year growing in fraternity with the Bismarck diocese seminarians.” All of this growth and progress that seminarians experience wouldn’t be possible, Magnuson and Vetter say, without the support of the people of the diocese. “We, the seminarians, are very thankful for the generous support. We know people are praying for us even without us asking,” Magnuson adds. “We’re very grateful for their contributions, but most importantly for their prayers. I know it helps me get through tough times knowing we have such a strong force behind us at home.”

Establishing a Named Family Endowment Establishing a Named Family Endowment is one of the easiest, most faithful and sensible ways to leave a Catholic Legacy, and it is a very thoughtful way to honor or memorialize a family member or loved one forever. Endowments also have considerable tax advantages, especially here in North Dakota because of the ND Tax Credit.

You can name the endowment after your family or a loved one and designate which Catholic ministries will benefit from it. This endowment then becomes part of your Catholic Legacy, because it will be listed here in the Annual Report of the “Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck.” And as future generations read the report, your grandchildren, extended family, and parish will see how important the Church was to you. Even better, you will have made a permanent financial impact to your favorite Catholic Ministry.

Because an endowment, by definition, is forever, the gift you give will provide for your chosen ministry in perpetuity. You may be asking yourself, “What ministries can I support with my Family Endowment?” Well, the Catholic Foundation has a variety of options for you; if it’s Catholic in western North Dakota, we typically can make it work. Seminarian Scholarship, Priests’ Care, Catholic Schools or School Systems, Home On The Range, any one of the ninety-eight parishes and many more examples here in the Annual Report.

Your Named Family Endowment resides in and is managed by the Catholic Foundation. It then becomes Your Very Own Qualified North Dakota Endowment Fund which enables you to contribute to the fund and take advantage of the 40% North Dakota Tax Credit. In short, donors will typically receive a Federal Tax Deduction and a dollar-for-dollar reduction in their ND Income Tax Liability (see the example on the next page for more details. The potential impact is dramatic!).

With this new Family Endowment, you now have a vehicle to which family members and others can contribute and receive the same tax benefits. Yes, anyone can contribute to an endowment which you create. A Family Endowment could even be the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, an IRA or even a will bequest.

Wouldn’t you like to leave a legacy as other families in our diocese have done? It started with just a simple idea and goal and was so easy to set up. How will you affect the next generation and beyond of Catholics in the Bismarck Diocese? Take the first step and call us at the Catholic Foundation to find out how you can begin your Legacy Gift of a Named Family Endowment.

I hope you are enjoying your Annual Report. If you would like more information on Named Family Endowments, contact me, Kim Dvorak, Director of Development, at 701-226-2047 or email me at [email protected]. There is still time to start one this year.

The ND Tax Credit is still here! The ND Tax Credit is still here!North Dakota has established a Tax Credit (ND Century Code 57-38-01.21) that allows individuals, businesses, trusts, and estates to take advantage of a 40% state tax credit for contributions of over $5,000 to qualified charitable endowment funds. Even better, the unused portion of that state tax credit can be carried forward for three years.

A North Dakota taxpayer in the 25% tax bracket makes a donation of $25,000.After taking advantage of an estimated federal tax savings of $6,250 and aND Income tax credit of $10,000, the cost of that $25,000 donation is just ..............

$8,750!You have to like those numbers!

Your donation to theCatholic Foundation Endowment Funds

can go farther and cost you less.Take a look at the following example:

On behalf of all the Catholic ministries you see listed here, the Diocese of Bismarck is proud to administer and guarantee payment to the annuitant while benefiting the Catholic ministry of your choice. A charitable gift annuity is an income producing gift which can help you and your church at the same time. First you receive a tax deduction and it qualifies for the ND State Tax Credit. Secondly it can generate more guaranteed income (for life) than you normally get with the average bank type investment (Certificate of Deposit). Finally when the annuity matures, the remainder is gifted to support the Catholic mission of your choice. For questions and more information please contact the Planned Giving Dept. at 701-204-7206.

Stewardship PrayerLord God, giver of life

and all good gifts, You anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit who inspired him to give everything he had for our sake. Move us by the same spirit of

stewardship to share first to the Lord, for the benefit of all.

By your grace, help us to follow in your footsteps and become more focused on loving and caring for our families, our

neighbors and our communities. Lead us to the awareness that

everything we are and everything we have is your gift.

Grant us the spirit of sacrifice to always seek your will and to

share our gifts with our brothers and sisters. May we be good

stewards of all we have received and cooperate with you in

building your kingdom of love and justice.

We ask this throughChrist our Lord.

Amen
