CLC Cooks Meal for Ronald McDonald House

Catherine Hammons, President of Council 40, Delphos and her family were one of many CLC volunteers on hand Saturday, November 7 to cook the meal for people at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus.

Represented in the picture are four generations of volunteers. Their volunteering was the result of wanting to give back after the youngest one spent time at the house when he was born.

Sharon SayS....We have just finished two very successful fraternal projects! The first was “Have a Little

Sole”. Oh my, did we get shoes! You, our members, went to work and found the shoes that you no longer needed or could not use. We collected over 6,000 pairs of shoes. Our drop off point, Bluffton Family Recreation, actually shut us off. They had no more room! But in all reality that is 6,000 pairs of shoes that were saved from the landfill! Think of the thousands of feet in the third world countries that will have shoes on them because of you. What an overwhelming response to a very worthwhile project!

The second project was going to the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus on a Saturday in November to prepare lunch and bake goodies for them. What a rewarding project! I get goosebumps everytime I think of this project. Everyone is there for a reason and sometimes that reason is not a good one. The staff, volunteers and residents were all so appreciative of us being there! I want to thank the twenty volunteers who helped that day and I also want to especially thank all the councils who donated money for the cause. Over $1,000 was given and after buying what food wasn’t donated I was able to get twenty-six $25 gas cards to give to them. We also presented them with a big box of pop tabs! These, I have been told, are what they use to pay their electric bill. Keep saving those tabs because I know many school groups and children that save them for the House all year long.

Some of us volunteers took a guided tour of the Ronald McDonald House. We were told that the Columbus House is the biggest in the world. It has over 130 rooms plus several houses nearby and there are times when all the rooms are filled. People, businesses and corporations have donated to this cause to enable the residents many of the comforts of their own home. This place was amazing and I only wish I lived closer than two hours away so I could volunteer on a regular basis. So if anyone is ever looking for a place to volunteer or donate to...I would highly recommend this place!

We are quickly approaching the Christmas season, a time for giving and receiving. Whatever your charity may be, my hope is that you will find it in your heart to give. Please remember that gift does not have to be monetary, prayers are also very welcome and they do not cost a penny! You just need to take the time to do it. I know during the busiest time of the year, that can be a struggle. Just remember anything you give or do will come back to you many times over. Many times giving feels so much better than receiving!

May your Christmas sparkle with moments of love, laughter and goodwill, and may the year ahead be full of contentment and joy.

Kalida • Council 134Council 134 met in Kalida St. Michael’s church basement on Monday, November

9, with 25 members and guests present. Our special guests were Herm and Rita Borgelt and Dave and Cindy Erhart. They gave us a presentation on their recent trip to Philadelphia to see Pope Francis. It was a once in a lifetime event for each of them, with memories they will cherish forever. They shared pictures and their joy of feeling the Holy Spirit present every moment. The theme for members of the Diocese of Toledo was Families Fully Alive.

After pumpkin pie was shared with all present, a short business meeting was held. Due to a conflict, our Christmas party on December 9 was moved to Dick’s Restaurant. A donation was made to Putnam County Habitat for Humanity. Donations were also made to two parish families of seriously ill CLC sisters to help with expenses. The meeting ended with prayers for the sick members.

Upper Sandusky • Council 86The November meeting was called to

order by President Barb Grasz. A total of 42 members and guests were present. The meeting opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.

Four guests were introduced. A thank you note from Angie Wigle, for support of the Alzheimer’s Association, was read. Sue Hoepf and Vicki Smith reported for the sick committee. Two get well Mass gift cards and a sympathy Mass card have been mailed.

Fairy Wagner reported that over 6,000 pairs of shoes were sorted and/or shredded as a result of the 2015 Make a Difference Day project.

November 7, 8 a.m.-noon, is CLC’s Service Day for Ronald McDonald House, Columbus. Fairy Wagner has room in her vehicle for those who would like to ride with her and serve food. Ronald McDonald House is also accepting pop tabs and gas gift cards as part of the program.

The results for the OLC School fundraiser at Bob Evans will be released in the near future.

Election of Officers was held. The 2016 Officers are: Barb Grasz, President; Joan Kincade, Vice President; Rosemary Smalley, Treasurer; Tammy Wagner, Recording Secretary; Susie Brodman, Financial Secretary; Teresa Brodman, Monitor. Installation of Officers will be in January 2016.

Teresa Brodman announced a tentative itinerary for the summer trip to the Saugatuck, Michigan area. The tentative dates are September 7-9, 2016. More details will be available next year.

Members were reminded that the children’s Christmas party, sponsored in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus, is December 18 at the K of C Hall. The

fun begins at 6 p.m. with Santa arriving at 7 p.m. All children are welcome! The Knights will provide and serve the food; CLC will bring desserts. On December 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the K of C Hall, all members are invited to meet to bag candy and fruit for the children. Everyone is welcome to help.

April 28-30, 2016 is the date for Council 86’s annual Rummage Sale. Members and their families were asked to downsize their belongings so we will have an excellent variety of items for sale. A motion was made, and passed, for sale dates and hours to be Thursday, April 28, 4-9 p.m.; Friday, April 29, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, “fill a bag at a flat rate,” 8-11 a.m. Barb will attend the K of C meeting to encourage the gentlemen to bring items for the event.

December 2, at 6:00 p.m. at the Upper Sandusky K of C Hall is the annual Christmas party. Attendees should bring a covered dish and your table service. Council 86 officers and committee will provide the meat and drinks. A silent auction will be held. Gift baskets donated by the monthly committees will be auctioned.

Happy Birthday was sung to Deanna Piecha.

Fairy Wagner informed members that CLC now has a Facebook page.

“Sip ‘n Shop” cards for the November 13 event, from 6-9 p.m. at Upper Sandusky Curves were distributed. Profits from the evening are earmarked for the Upper Sandusky Food Bank.

1 package chocolate cake mix (regular size)Pencil, paper, scissors and waxed paper1 cup light green candy coating disks

2 tablespoons corn syrup, warmedGold pearl dust

mint Andes candies, chopped1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Prepare and bake cake batter according to package directions for cupcakes; cool com-pletely.

Meanwhile, with a pencil and paper, draw shamrock design. Cut out pattern. Melt candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl; stir until smooth. Transfer to a resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in corner of bag. Place waxed paper over the pattern; pipe a sham-rock design. Repeat 23 times. Refrigerate until set.

Lightly brush wafers with corn syrup; brush with pearl dust. Gently lift candy shamrocks from waxed paper. Lightly brush bottoms with corn syrup; attach to wafers. Set aside.

Place Andes candies in a small bowl. In a small saucepan, bring cream just to a boil. Pour over candies; whisk until smooth. Cool slightly, stirring occasionally. Dip cupcakes into melted mints; let stand until set. Press a shamrock-topped wafer onto each cupcake. Yield: 2 dozen.Recipe and photo from www.tasteofhome.com

The Battle Buddy Foundation was founded out of the personal experiences of Kenny, and how much his service dog, Atlas, changed his life. Reducing the effects of hypervigilance and other symptoms of post traumatic stress can be life changing for a disabled veteran struggling with activities in daily life. Kenny was on 31 different medications; now only a few.

These highly trained service dogs bring results that medication alone cannot. Trained to mitigate their handler’s specific disability, a Battle Buddy service dog is a lifeline and best friend. They can be trained to wake their handler from nightmares, redirect flashbacks, retrieve and remind the handler of medications, guide them from stressful situations, ‘block’ their handler’s back, provide e n v i r o n m e n t a l assessment (in such cases as h a l l u c ina t i on s ) , signal specific behaviors (such as interrupting repetitive or injurious behaviors), alert to and redirect anger, act as a brace if the handler becomes dizzy, and many other vital, life-changing tasks.

There are MANY veterans in need of these life changing service dogs. Many veterans are seeing the benefits of how a service dog could

better mitigate their symptoms as opposed to relying on debilitating medications, and are reaching out for help. Many of the medications currently prescribed for post traumatic stress carry “black box”

warning labels, warning of the risks of increased suicidal tendencies as a side effect.

With an average of 22 veteran suicides a day, there has never been a greater need for the provision of long term and tangible support for our veterans in need. Through The Battle Buddy Foundation’s service dog program, they intend to save as many lives resources will allow. The VA does not recognize the

medical benefit of service dogs and will not fund them.This is where they rely on you, and your financial support.

Without the appropriate funding, TBBF is limited in the veterans it is able to match with battle buddy service dogs, and there has been no shortage of applicants in need. Fraternalism In Action

I first met Kenny and Atlas at an American Legion Auxiliary meeting. His story and cause moved me to bring them to Bucyrus for the Auxiliary’s annual dinner/show. Council 115 and I, as an agent, helped to sponsor this evening of fun and fellowship. As a result, we were able to raise $4,000 for The Battle Buddy Foundation.
