Visitation

A moving but fairly ordinary happening: an encounter between two mothers to be. But when one thinks of the role of each in God’s plans, the meeting becomes a deep and fruitful mystery. The life of God and the hope of humanity meet in our

Gospel today.

The journey of the young Mary, pregnant and unmarried, to visit her older and also pregnant cousin Elizabeth is vivid with meaning. The walk from Nazareth to Jerusalem is long and through inhospitable countryside; we often see some of

this area on our TV screens with reports of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

We can draw strength from the confidence and determination of these two women. They faced a challenge to societal prejudices in their pregnancy – in this they supported and encouraged each other. They celebrated joy in the life-gift

they bore in their bodies.

Their story calls us to reach out and support each other in times of pain and struggle. We share in the God-life given to all and can bring gentle strength to

those who share our life journey.

“My soul proclaims the glory of God.”

Fr. Chris

Roger van der Weyden (ca.1400-1464): The Visitation. The encounter between Mary and Elizabeth who both expect a child. Leipzig,

Museum of Fine Arts.

Entrance Antiphon:

Drop down dew from above, you heavens, and let the clouds rain down the Just One; let the earth be opened and

bring forth a Saviour.

Entrance Hymn: No 411 (Gather) Holy God We Praise Your Name

Opening Prayer:

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your

Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his

Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First Reading: Micah 5:1- 4

The Lord says to his people: "You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judea, from you

shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days." Therefore he

shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall re-

turn to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the

name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he

shall be the one of peace. The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 79:2-3. 15-16. 18-19 10.30am Mass: No 47 (Gather)

Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved

Second Reading: Hebrews 10:5-10

When Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have pre-

pared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, as it is written of me in

the scroll of the book, 'See, God, I have come to do your will, O God.'" When Christ said, "You have neither de-

sired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered ac-

cording to the law), then he added, "See, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish

the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ

once for all. The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation: Luke 1:38

Alleluia, alleluia! I am the servant of the Lord: may his will for me be done. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 1:39-44

Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah

and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was

filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of

your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard

the sound of your greeting the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would

be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." The Gospel of the Lord.

Offertory Hymn: No 472 (Gather) Isaiah 49:I Will Never Forget You

Communion Antiphon:

Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.

Reflection Hymn: No 191 (Gather) Gift of Finest Wheat

Recessional: No 547 (Gather) Hail Queen of Heaven
