It’s as if she sees that this good Lord who gives and gives is tired, sorrowful, and himself in need of help and consolation. When St. Therese gazes at Jesus she doesn’t see him as if he were a machine into which one puts coin and then automatically gets graces. Instead, she sees him as living and real. In fact, she sees that he has a human heart. She sees a man who has feelings, a man who is hurt when people are cold, ungrateful, and afraid of him. So, Therese decides to console his aching Heart. “Behold this Heart which loves so much yet is so little loved.” Jesus is simple because he has only one desire, a desire best described as a thirst. He thirsts for us to trust and love him. It’s the time of Easter joy! I challenge myself and our staff to renew our thirst for Jesus on the Cross. “Yes, I will console you, Lord. I will be your friend.” Won’t you join us? In the Triumph of God’s Great Love, Maureen Engen Principal

Dear Sacred Heart Family,

A crucifix hangs in every office area and classroom throughout the school above the door. I’m sure many of us have at least one crucifix hanging somewhere in our homes How often we have glanced at these crucifixes, including the one of our altar. How often, at least for myself, have I taken for granted the crucifix hanging in a room.

This Lent, I read the book, Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. Michael Gaitley. A few paragraphs from St. Therese’s class work, Story of a Soul were in the book. Her inspiration has changed my observation of the crucifix-from a glance to a GAZE, with emphasis on loving and trusting the heart of Jesus in a deeper way. In essence, a thirst to “console the heart which loves so much yet is so little loved.”

From Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. Michael Gaitley:

“Alas! I have always noticed that when I compared myself to the saints, there is between them and me the same difference that exists between a mountain whose summit is lost in the clouds and the obscure grain of sand trampled underfoot by passers-by. Instead of becoming discouraged, I said to myself: God cannot inspire unrealizable desires. I can, then, in spite of my littleness, aspire to holiness. I must bear with myself such as I am with all my imperfections. But, I want to seek out a means of going to heaven by a little way, a way that is very straight, very short, and totally new.”

“I searched, then, in the Scriptures for some sign and I read these words coming from the mouth of Eternal Wisdom: Whoever is a LITTLE ONE, let him come to me.” O my God, I discovered: “As one whom a mother caresses, so will I comfort you.” The elevator which must raise me to heaven is Your arms, O Jesus!” -St. Therese of Lisieux from the Story of Soul.

Reflect on St. Therese as she looks deeply into the Heart of Jesus on the Cross. What’s her attitude toward him? Interesting. Her face is full of compassion.

Show Your GenerosityBe the first to sign up for a rectory meal in the new year. Thank you for supporting Fr. Pat & Fr. Dan in this beautiful act of service by providing them a meal twice a month. Due to our priests busy daily and eve-ning schedules, we ask families to consider donating gift cards to local restaurants which allows our priests great flexibility while trying to get lunch or dinner in between round-the-clock appointments and responsibilities. More information can be found on the following sign-up genius. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e-4faba62daaf49-201720182
