Catholicism: Why Not?

SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Is there a need for organized religion?

NOTES FROM Gary Perrydore– Diaconate Candidate

Lector, Acolyte, Deacon L ast year I wrote about my journey toward being ordained as a perma-nent deacon and being instituted as a lector along with nine classmates by the Bishop. Fr. Tom invited me to share on the next chapter of the journey toward ordination: being instituted as an Acolyte. This update will give additional insight into the process of being formally instituted as an Acolyte and how that makes one more visible within the parish.

This past Tuesday, August 28th, Bishop Boyea instituted myself and nine other men of our class into the ministry of Acolyte. Before the Second Vatican Council, when a man was preparing for priesthood he would be instituted into what were called “minor orders” which includ-ed: acolyte, exorcist, lector, and porter. Following the Council Pope Paul VI in his apostolic letter, Ministeria Quaedam, the “minor orders” were established as “ministries” and exor-cist and porter were dropped. The document dictated that all candi-dates for holy orders be now instituted as lectors and acolytes and carry out these respective functions prior to ordination. These minis-tries have been typically

instituted only on those advancing to ordination as priests or deacons versus the potential of instituting other men choosing not to advance to ordination. Given this, most parishes don’t have instituted lectors and acolytes serving at Mass. However, the church allows for most of their functions to be carried out by non-instituted members of the laity as altar servers and readers as commis-sioned by the pastor when there is an absence of instituted lectors or acolytes. Being instituted as an acolyte means that I’m expected to serve at Mass as an acolyte leading up to ordination as a permanent deacon. Visibly this means you’ll see a man who is a bit taller than most of our servers, a bit fuller, has facial hair and is a little gray, serving at Mass!

direction and requirements for conferring these ministries and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) details the duties and functions they carry out. The GIRM is very directive of the role of acolyte but space here limits including that detail. Suffice it to say the acolyte carries out the functions we typically see altar servers doing along with addi-tional duties. The acolyte doesn’t replace the servers but works in conjunction with them and during the introductory rite, per the GIRM, typically could carry the cross and present the book to the priest or deacon. For the liturgy of the Eucharist, if no deacon is present, the acolyte prepares the altar and pre-sents the thurible to the priest assisting him as he incenses the altar, then the acolyte incenses the priest and the people. GIRM 191 and 192 state if Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are needed, an instituted acolyte is first to assist in distribution of Communion and may also purify the sacred vessels at the credence table following the distribution. Lastly, Ministeria Quaedam states as circumstances call for, an instituted acolyte may expose and repose the blessed sacrament for Adoration but without a blessing.

Institution of acolyte is done within the Mass and is conferred by a bishop. From the Rite of Insti-tution of Acolyte, Bishop Boyea spoke the following words during the institution Mass:

Dear sons in Christ, as people chosen for the ministry of acolyte, you will have a special role in the Church’s ministry. The summit and source of the Church’s life is the Eucharist, which builds up the Christian community and makes it grow. It is your responsibility to assist priests and deacons in carrying out their ministry, and as

special ministers to give holy communion to the faithful at the liturgy and to the sick. Because you are specially called to this ministry, you should strive to live more fully by the Lord’s sacrifice and to be molded more perfectly in its likeness. You should seek to understand the deep spiritual meaning of what you do, so that you may offer yourselves daily to God as spiritual sacrifices acceptable to him through Jesus Christ.

Mary and I, and our family, have been blessed throughout the journey toward Deaconate ordination. Fr. Tom, Deacon Frank and Barbara Papp and this community have blessed us with their support, words of encouragement, prayers and Mass intentions. Thank you all very much. Thanks also to Mary and our children for their support, love and sacrifice. God willing, I will be ordained as a perma-nent deacon on May 18, 2019 and we will be called to continue to serve our wonderful parish!
