Over the last 13 years, Georgia’s healthcare system has undergone effective reforms, which have improved health indicators and narrowed the gap between Georgian and European standards.

Number of Hospitals

After Georgia regained independence in 1991, private spending became the major source of healthcare financing, as annual public per capita funding slumped to US$ 0.5 from US$ 149 in 1990. In 2002, healthcare spending per capita stood at US$ 64 and over 2002-13 it surged to US$ 350. The 5.5x growth came in ahead of the 4.6x growth rate of GDP per capita from US$ 779 to US$ 3,597 over the same period.

Health indicators improved significantly as infrastructure improvements, increased public healthcare spending, and GDP growth resulted in better access to healthcare. Healthcare often accounts for a country’s largest or 2nd largest public expenditure. In the 2016 state budget of Georgia, healthcare expenditure is at US$ 359mn or 9.3% of total budget outlays. The growth of healthcare spending is sustainable because: 1) The share of healthcare in government expenditure is still low at 9.3% compared to the 12.2% peer average in 2013 - a sign of room for improvement;

2) Healthcare costs are shared between the patient and the government, with the latter’s share capped. Therefore, the government will remain committed to healthcare spending even if UHC use increases significantly.

Over the last decade, Georgia has implemented several milestone reforms including the renovation of hospital infrastructure, the launch of the state insurance program, and the introduction of UHC. Since 2003, MoLHSA has been softening regulatory control and allowing private companies to enter the healthcare sector while medical services have been exempt from most major taxes (value-added, profit,14 and property) since 1997.

MODERN TECHNOLOGIES IN MEDICINE

In a modern world, quality medical service always includes diagnostics with modern medical equipment and health care. High level medical technology is a part of doctors’ work.

Medicine in the 21st century is increasingly dependent on technology. Unlike in many other areas, the cost of medical technology is not declining and its increasing use contributes to the spiraling healthcare costs. Many medical professionals equate progress in medicine to increasing use of sophisticated technology that is often expensive and beyond the reach of the average citizen. There is an urgent need to address this situation through development and use of appropriate technology in accordance with the needs and priorities of the society. A number of simple and inexpensive quality measures that have the potential of improving outcomes substantially without the need for expensive equipment should be instituted before embracing high-end technology. Innovations to reduce costs that are commonly used in limited resource environments should be tested systematically.

The processing and production of new medical equipment is related to the development of many adjacent sciences and technologies, and it is

using modern achievements from informational technology, chemistry, polymers, physics, design, nano-technologies fields, etc. This leads to the specific dynamics of its production development – the speed of the elaboration and production of new medical equipment can only be compared to the mobile phone industry: the average period of medical equipment availability (until the stage of renewal and/or modernization/modification) is just 18-24 months.

At the same time, the general trends of the medical equipment development in the country in the coming years should be considered too what in some ways is connected with the existing world experience in this area. It is known that the medical equipment world market is significantly formed by large transnational companies such as General Electric, Siemens, Philips, etc. The market development largely depends on the priorities of the transnational companies. Judging by an increased interest of the medical equipment large manufacturers they are expected to activate the product popularization on so called new market (emerged markets) what will be followed by the import of the high-tech medical equipment.

Number of dentists

Dental services are more and more required throughout the world. First of all, it has been caused by the population’s aging tendency as well as changed ecological conditions. Consequently, the age of the patients has become lower and they refer to dentists more often. On the other hand, the age of the patients has increased. Therefore, the number of dental clinics and dentists gradually increases.

Georgia observes the same picture. The number of dental clinics, dentists and income have increased.

The annual summarizing Tbilisi Dental Show and GSA conferences’ series, organized by exhibition center ExpoGeorgia and Georgian Stomatologists Association (GSA), will be held within the framework of the exhibition. The place allows the professionals of dental sphere to gather and get and exchange the valuable information concerning modern tendencies.

AESTHETIC MEDICINE

Market research analyst predicts the global medical aesthetics market to grow steadily at a by 10% per year. Factors such as the growing aging population, increased awareness about cosmetic surgeries, and the rise in high-income population are expected to foster the prospects for growth in this market during the estimated period.

Recent advances in technologies, especially in the laser-based medical aesthetic segment, are expected to drive market growth during the forecast period. Medical laser technologies such as high intensity focused ultrasound, transdermal focused ultrasound, and others are rapidly gaining popularity among the populace as they are non-invasive and help in fat reduction.

Product-based segmentation of the medical aesthetics market:• Laser-based medical aesthetics• Facial aesthetics• Breast implants• Dental implants

The market study, analysts have estimated the dental implants segment to be the largest market segment during the forecast period. At present, this segment accounts for more than 34% of the total market share and is envisaged to further enhance its hold over

the market owing to factors like the recent surge in oral health complications.

Moreover, rise in disposable income has boosted the demand for cosmetic surgeries, thereby accelerating market growth. On the other hand, side effects associated with aesthetic procedures continue to negatively impact the consumer preference index.

Growth in population between the age of 30 to 65 years is widening the target consumer base as signs of aging such as wrinkles, lack of skin elasticity, and dark spots appear prominently in these years. For instance, according to the CIA World Fact Book, around 41.7% of the total German population was aged between 25 to 54 years and around 13.6% of the population was aged between 55 to 65 years in 2014. The presence of a higher percentage of population having aging signs, the demand for aesthetic medicine is likely to experience rapid growth.

Georgia fully follows the global market trends. The number of aesthetic medical institutions, clinics are growing. The interest to spa and wellness, nail and body care products and medical tourism increase steadily.
