Before getting into how your body is rusting, we need to re-

view some simple chemistry.

Don’t worry. I’ll make it easy to understand.

Molecules are composed of atoms. There are different types

of molecules, such as water or wood.

Atoms are composed of negative electrons which spin around

the positive nucleus in the center of the atom.

Oxidation is the process of combining oxygen with other mol-

ecules, for instance when leaves are burned.

Oxidation is good and bad. You require oxygen to live be-

cause inside your body, it creates the heat and energy of life,

but it also creates free radicals, which damage the cells.

This is why you feel pain after excessive exercise. Free

radicals are molecules or atoms with unpaired electrons.

Electrons, like people, “want” to be paired.

When free radicals (usually oxygen), whose electrons really

want to be paired, contact other atoms whose electron pairs

are not strongly attracted to each other, the free radical

“steals” one of the electrons. This is oxidation.

When your cell walls or the tiny organs inside your cell

are oxidized, they are damaged and destroyed. This is why

you feel pain after a strenuous workout.1

Even worse, the molecules that lost the electrons now become

free radicals themselves and the number of free radicals in-

creases more and more.

Free radicals are an important cause of aging and disease, particularly the diseases of old age, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke.2 So oxi-dation is good when it provides energy, but it also causes damage to your cells.

We can measure the damage to your cells caused by oxidative stress (oxidation) because the damage creates a chemical (TBARS3) in your body. Normally, this damage increases with age.

Your cells protect themselves from free radicals with antioxi-

dants. Antioxidants carry extra electrons they can “donate” to

free radicals without becoming a free radical themselves.

Page 6: Causing Aging and Disease123webmagic.com/protandim-booklet-pdg.pdf · 2016-11-22 · Causing Aging and Disease Something Can Be Done About It By Peter Glickman . Protandim® supports

Your cells’ produce three super-antioxidants (SOD4, Glutathi-one and Catalase). SOD alone deactivates more than a million free radicals per second!5 This amount is far beyond what is deactivated by the dietary antioxidants you already take, such as vitamin C and E, which can only scavenge free radicals on a one-to-one basis.

Unfortunately, your body produces less and less of these super-antioxidants as you age.

SOD is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants made in your cells. It was discovered by Joe McCord, PhD, in 1969. He dedicated the next 44 years of research to finding ways to increase SOD in cells.

His research led to Protandim, a unique patented combination of 5 herbs that increased SOD substantially. This is the reason that after 30 days of Protandim the usual increased cell dam-age (TBARS) found in older people is eliminated and peo-ple in their 70s have the same low degree of damage as 20 year olds!6

In his later research, he found that these herbs stimulate pro-duction of a protein called Nrf27. Nrf2 stimulates the cell to produce powerful antioxidants, inhibit inflammation, pro-tect against heavy metal toxins and repair or remove dam-aged parts of the cell.8

In addition to SOD, Nrf2 increases Glutathione. It is consid-ered the “master antioxidant.” It not only acts as a powerful antioxidant itself, but it can also regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, improve immune response, help in DNA repair and detoxify drugs, chemicals, radiation, and other toxins.9

To summarize:

Oxidation is necessary to create heat and energy in your body.

But it also causes free radicals.

Strenuous exercise also creates free radicals.

Free radicals play an important role in aging and degener-ative diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke.

Your cells naturally produce super-antioxidants that han-dle free radicals.

As you age, your cells produce less and less of these super-antioxidants.

This leads to more and more cellular damage as you age.

Protandim can reduce the amount of ongoing cellular damage to that of a youngster.

These results are well explained in the 10-minute

Published Scientific Studies on Protandim Translated into Plain English

The following information comes from published peer-

reviewed scientific studies. “Peer-reviewed” means that each

study is submitted before publication to a panel of experts in

the subject matter. To ensure the integrity and validity of the

study, the panel is chosen by the editor of the scientific jour-

nal, not by the author of the study. It is published only if a

majority of the reviewers approve.

General Studies

Published in Free Radical Biology & Medicine, 2006.6

Normally older people have more cell damage from free

radicals than younger people. After 30 days on Protandim,

however, the normal increase in cell damage found in old-

er people was eliminated, meaning even the 78 year

old, had the same amount of free radical damage as the 20

year old.

Cell damage from free radicals for all participants av-

eraged 40% less after 30 days.

After 120 days, two of the super-antioxidants (SOD and

catalase) were increased 30% and 54% respectively signif-

icantly increasing free radical protection.

Published in Free Radical Biology & Medicine, 2009.10

The combination of herbs in Protandim was found to be 3 to 9 times more powerful than each herbal ingre-dient alone.

Attempts to duplicate the results of Protandim by simply increasing the size of the individual herb doses failed be-cause such large individual doses had toxic side effects, while Protandim had no toxic side effects. This means you cannot get the same results as Protandim by simply taking the same herbs individually.

Protandim increased the amount of Glutathione, the Mas-

ter Antioxidant, 2 to 4 times.

Published in Molecular Aspects of Medicine, 2011.11

Protandim increased Nrf2 (which activates super-

antioxidants in every cell) more than any other known

Nrf2 activator.

Nrf2 positively effects more than 600 genes, including

those related to colon cancer, heart disease and Alzhei-

mer’s.

“Nrf2 activators may well spawn a new class of drugs

to target the so-called ‘diseases of aging,’ including

cancer, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory and au-

toimmune diseases and neuro-degenerative diseases.”

From a study submitted in 2015 to the peer-review process

from Washington State University.12

“… Nrf2 may well become the most extraordinary

therapeutic and most extraordinary preventive break-

through in the history of medicine.”

Heart and Cardiovascular Studies

Published in Circulation, the Journal of the American Heart

Association, 2009.13

In rats with high blood pressure in the lungs, which

normally results in heart failure, Protandim protected

the rat heart cells from scarring.

It also lowered the heart cell death rate and preserved

heart function.

Published in Journal of Dietary Supplements, 2010.14

Mice with muscular dystrophy were given Protandim at a

dose equivalent to a standard human dose for 6 months.

The mice not given Protandim, had nearly double the

free radical damage of the Protandim mice.

The non-Protandim mice had double the amount of a

chemical that indicates chronic heart failure.

The Protandim mice had 35% more of a heart protecting

enzyme.

Published in Free Radical Biology & Medicine, 2011.15

Reduced internal scarring of the type of human veins

used in bypass operations,. This kept them open more

to the flow of blood.

Decreased free radicals, increased SOD (a super -

antioxidant) 3x and catalase (another super-antioxidant)

12x.

Published in Oxidative Medicine and Cell Longevity, 2012.16

Human cells lining the coronary arteries were tested in the

laboratory by adding hydrogen peroxide to provide oxidative

stress.

Only 6% of cells protected with Protandim died versus

34% died in those cells not protected by Protandim.

Cancer Studies

Published in PLoS One (Public Library of Science One),

2009.18

All the mice were subjected to chemicals known to initiate

tumors and then divided into groups.

After two weeks, one group had Protandim added to their

diet in an amount equivalent to the daily dose for humans.

After two more weeks, both the Protandim group and the

non-Protandim group had a chemical applied to that same

area 5 days a week for 14 weeks. This chemical is known

to promote tumors.

All of the non-Protandim mice developed tumors.

33% of the Protandim-protected mice developed no

tumors.

Average number of tumors per Protandim-protected

mouse was 2.7.

Average number of tumors per non-Protandim mouse was

6.3—more than double the number of tumors per Pro-

tandim-protected mouse.

Included in their conclusion: "Overall, induction of anti-

oxidant enzymes by Protandim may serve as a practi-

cal and potent approach for cancer prevention."

Ingredients

It’s important to point out again the results of the study pub-

lished in Free Radical Biology & Medicine, 2009.10

The combination of herbs in Protandim was found to be 3

to 9 times more powerful than each ingredient alone.

Attempts to duplicate the results of Protandim by simply

increasing the size of the individual herb doses resulted

in toxic side effects

Protandim had no toxic side effects.

This is not marketing hype. This is a published scientific

study done at a major research university.

Protandim is made up of:

Green tea extract,

Turmeric extract (Curcumin),

Milk Thistle,

Ashwagandha,

Bacopa.

All are known to be antioxidants and are being studied for

possible cancer preventative properties.
