The demand was firm during the first half of the quarter ahead of ChineseLunar New Year holidays, later due to improved consumption from theautomotive and alumina industries. The Indian Caustic industry reporteddampened demand, and a further hit as the government’s trading arm deniedany recommendations to impose Anti-Dumping Duty (ADD) on the ChineseCaustic Soda to lend support to the downstream consumers. This left asignificant room for the inflow of cheap Caustic imports in India.
Europe
The supplies of Caustic Soda in the first quarter of 2021 slumped, as the Caustic Soda market hit historically low. In the Northwest Europe prices of Caustic Soda were averaged under USD 180/MT FOB in early March.
The demand however surged as the majority of Caustic Soda supply was diverted toward the manufacturing of PVC production. Overall demand however remained stable with the economy still grappling to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic during 2021.

Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide) is a strong alkali possessing the chemicalformula NaOH. Caustic Soda is one of the most popularly used chemicalsfinding usage either as a raw material or as an auxiliary chemical acrossmyriad industries. Caustic Soda is industrially produced in two forms - lye andsolid. Solid Caustic Soda can be processed in the form of flakes or granules atdifferent purity levels. Caustic Soda finds usage in textiles processing, aluminarefineries, soap and detergent, paper and pulp industry and as an intermediatefor manufacturing a wide variety of organic chemicals such as dyes, pigments,agrochemicals and variety of inorganic chemicals such as sulphites,phosphites etc. Caustic Soda is produced by the electrolysis of brine (solutionof sodium chloride i.e. NaCl), using one of three cell types: mercury, diaphragmand membrane cells. During the electrolysis, Chlorine is deposited at the anodewhile Sodium Hydroxide solution and Hydrogen are produced at the cathode.Being a co-product, the Caustic Soda markets are strongly influenced by themovement across the Chlorine value chains. Because Chlorine and Caustic arethe two different products consumed across different industries,manufacturers report facing problems in balancing the demand on a chlor-alkali plant.
