CAVAn EVEnTs AnD FEsTiVALsCavan people like to throw a party. The county showed what it was capable of when it successfully hosted the world’s largest traditional music festival, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, from 2010-2012, when hundreds of thousands of revellers enjoyed an unparalleled Cavan welcome. This county is teeming with brilliant artists, dancers, singers, musicians and generally happy, welcoming people, all ready for a celebration, whatever the occasion! So whether it’s a belter of a céilí, a sporting occasion, a Pumpkin Festival, or a spooky Nightmare Jazz Parade, Cavan’s the place to be if you like to party!
Just outside Cavan town, Shantemon is home to an ancient monument known as Fionn McCumhail’s Fingers: five ancient stones that legend says, are the fingers of the mythical giant and leader of Na Fianna, who lies asleep beneath the earth, ready to rise in Ireland’s hour of need.

Cavan is made for walking. Its unspoiled green drumlin hills and picturesque country roads quietly insist that you get outdoors and breathe the fresh air. It’s said Cavan boasts a lake for every day of the year, and there are few things more relaxing than a pleasant lakeside stroll with friends.
The Shannon-Erne Blueway courses through Cavan, offering still more waterside walks. You can even hop in a canoe for part of the way! There are also marked trails at Cavan Burren Park, Killykeen, Dun a Rí and Deerpark Forest Parks to suit all ages and all abilities.
Cavan, located in a UNESCO Geopark, has plenty to offer the more adventurous walker too, and the 26Km Cavan Way is a fixture on any rambler’s to-do list.
Cavan is a land that’s charmed some of Ireland’s greatest writers, and as you stroll through its mythical, evocative landscape you’ll find yourself inspired, too.

uNESCO Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark
Covering Counties Cavan and Fermanagh, this UNESCO-accredited Geopark contains some of the finest landscapes in Ireland. Ranging from rugged uplands, lakes and forests through to gently rolling drumlins, the landscapes of the Geopark represent a complex Earth history dating back as far as 650 million years ago. A Global Geopark is a region with geological heritage of international significance where that heritage is being used to support local communities through sustainable tourism. It may be that the geological heritage is significant because of its educational value; because of its great value to science; or simply because it is beautiful to look at. Information on exploring the Geopark is available from the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre in Florencecourt and from the Market House Visitor Centre in Blacklion.
