In 1969, when British bikes were on the wane and the German motorcycle industrywas stagnating, the CB Seven-Fifty breezed in as a breath of fresh air. The characterof the four-cylinder seduced you with its responsive purring as it throbs effortlesslyup through the revs, but particularly seductive was its engine’s faultless mechanicaldesign, hitherto unheard of in a bike. From 1969 to 1975, the CB Seven-Fifty keptthe same appearance, but numerous small internal modifications perfected itsdependability, to the detriment of its raw power that fell to 63PS.

In 1975, the CB Seven-Fifty F1 putthings right with a reworked cylinderhead, tougher camshaft, 28mm ∅carburettor and a 4-into-1 exhaustsystem to bring it back up to 67PS.In 1976, the F2 moved up to 73PSthanks to new depression carburet-tors and a reworked cylinder head. For the occasion, the chassis wasalso revised, with new steering geom-etry, a reinforced frame, and twindisc brakes at the front with a singleone to the rear. The F2 could achievea top speed of 125mph.

From 1978, the second generationof 750s arrived on the scene withthe KZ, still an in-line four-cylinder,but with a twin OHC and four valvesper cylinder. This technique wasdeveloped on the Bol d’Or 900 bythe engineer Irimajiri, to whom weowe, among others, the six cylinderracing bike, the CX500, the CBX1000and the oval piston project.

The KZ had a single piece crankshaftand was lubricated by a wet sump, had electronic ignition without a breakin the circuit and a 77PS engine.

The 100PS per litre barrier had finallybeen broken. In 1984, the thirdgeneration of 4 cylinder Seven-Fiftywas named the CBX and was againdesigned by Irimajiri. It was charac-terised by hyper square dimensions

(67 × 53mm) and its compactness, since it was no bigger than the brandnew V4. To do so, the alternatorwas placed behind the cylinders, the primary transmission was donethrough the gears and a dry sumpsystem was adopted for a gain inheight. The 16 valves had an auto-matic adjusting system withhydraulic tappets and the ignitionwas fully transistorised.

In the Honda range, the CBX750competed head-on with the VF750F,equipped with a V4 designed by a different team to Irimajiri’s, andwhich developed 9PS. This strugglefor influence between two schools of engineers was to turn in favour of the designers of the V4. For a few years, the in-line 4 cylinderdisappeared from the range to resur-face in the USA in 1990, under the

name of Nighthawk. A basic bikewith retro looks, it was cheap tobuy in an attempt to resuscitate the youth market. Two years later,in 1992, the Nighthawk becamethe Seven-Fifty for the Europeanmarket. It had an engine deriveddirectly from the CBX and was lesssporty. The end result was a newCB Seven-Fifty as proud of its pastas it was avant-garde in its concept.
