CBA Mission Statement

Christian Brothers Academy is a Catholic Lasallian college preparatory school serving young men and women of diverse faiths and cultures. The administration, faculty, staff, and the entire CBA family provide students with a safe, nurturing environment that fosters spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth. CBA challenges students to achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives, encouraging them to live as moral, responsible, contributing, and successful members of society.

Overview of CBA Digital Learning Program

The following document

outlines the consistent policies,

procedures, and expectations

of the CBA Digital Learning

Program. Digital learning

necessitates dedication,

accountability, self-motivation,

time-management, and

consistency of program. The

shift to digital learning offers

students the opportunity to

experience a different learning

modality while building a digital

skillset that will benefit them

educationally and eventually,

professionally.

Helpful Information and Guidelines:

1) On occasion, a modified schedule will be offered to engage in live events, teaching

opportunities, retreats, or mission driven activities. Students and parents will be notified in

advance of any schedule change.

2) Grading will continue, and new grades will be posted to myCBA. Although changes are not

anticipated at this time, any necessary adjustments to our academic calendar will be

communicated promptly with all students and parents.

3) Students enrolled in BOCES online courses should remain in contact with Mrs. Shull

([email protected]) and Mr. Garraffo ([email protected]) to access

testing passwords and monitor progress.

4) Any issues with connectivity, online access or with a student’s electronic device should be

communicated immediately to our technology department at [email protected] so

that problems can be addressed and alternative plans can be developed.

5) If your child is ill and unable to participate in digital learning on a particular school day, we ask

that you send an email to [email protected] to report his/her absence.

6) If CBA enters into full, 100% remote learning, the administrative team will provide weekly email

updates to students and parents.

7) All student services remain in place. Please consult with the following individuals if they can be

of assistance:

Daily Schedule The following is the “regular” daily schedule. Students are expected to follow this schedule to

organize their time throughout the day and ensure the continuity of their education. Similar to a

regular school day, if a student has an appointment, obligation, or reason to be "away from school"

for a portion of a day, they can make up their work and "attend a class" later in the day. Close

communication with the teacher is strongly encouraged.

Classroom Collaboration Tools

The myCBA Learning Management Platform provides a variety of classroom tools. Each

parent has a personal account with unique credentials. To login, visit

https://cbasyracuse.myschoolapp.com/

Bulletin Boards

All CBA teachers will use bulletin boards in remote and in-person learning situations to post general class information. This will include such information as a welcome video, expectations, announcements, daily lesson objectives, related class assignments, and activities.

Topics Topics are where teachers post information for specific units, chapters, notes, powerpoint presentations, recorded zoom sessions, or academic themes. A variety of content options are available from photos and videos to embed codes from third-party educational tools.

Assignments Assignments provide a convenient and paperless method for students to complete coursework. myCBA supports online submissions to collect student work and integrations are also available with Google Drive and Turnitin. To stay organized, students (and their parents) can view their entire workload from all courses in the Assignment Center.

Assessments Quizzes and exams to gauge student understanding are administered through Assessments. There are a variety of customization options available to teachers such as question type (multiple-choice, essay, etc.), the time to complete, and whether students can retake the assessment.

Graded Discussions

Ideally suited to remote learning situations, Graded Discussions enable teachers to open a discussion thread as an assignment for students to comment on and engage with each other. These discussions may or may not be graded.

Course Roster From the course rosters, teachers can communicate with students via messages within the application or email. This is a good way to provide feedback and connect with students to make sure they’re staying on task.

Additional Approved Educational Tools

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that can be used to provide LIVE

(synchronous) virtual class meeting space. Although the majority of instruction

will take place asynchronously, this application provides a forum for real time

presentations. See Appendix A for Zoom policies and procedures.

Some faculty may utilize this platform as a resource to store saved videos with

guided presentations of lessons, etc.

EdPuzzle is a free assessment-centered tool that allows teachers and students

to create interactive online videos by embedding either open-ended or multiple-

choice questions, audio notes, audio tracks, or comments on a video. Edpuzzle

interactive videos can be made with videos from a number of websites,

including YouTube, TED, Vimeo, and National Geographic.

Screencastify provides teachers with many recording options including: record a

single tab in your web browser, capture all screen activity, or use your webcam to

record or insert a video of yourself. While recording, use the tools to write,

draw, erase, keep time, restart, or spotlight a section on the screen.

Google Apps for Education is a suite of cloud-based tools created by Google to use in classrooms. Apps include: Google Drive, Sheets, Slides, Docs, and Forms. See Appendix B, How to Optimize Google Chrome for CBA Digital Learning for more information and further instruction.

Student Expectations

1) Students are encouraged to continue to make prayer and reflection part of their daily lives.

Daily prayer in the digital world is coordinated by Mrs. Perkins and student members of the

Campus Ministry Program.

2) Students will be expected to check their CBA email and myCBA daily, Monday through Friday,

for information from their teachers and school administrators. These will be the two primary

means of communication with all students.

3) Students should be ready for “digital school” at 8:15 AM each morning.

4) Students will be required to complete any and all daily work that is assigned to them online by

their teacher, by each teacher’s established deadlines. Work submitted after these deadlines

will be considered late, and may result in reduced credit being awarded.

5) A student's daily "attendance" will be determined by their daily completion of the work they are

assigned in each class. This work could include assignments to be submitted digitally,

comments to be posted on myCBA, videos to be viewed, etc. It is expected that students are in

contact with their teachers with at least one communication (group discussion, email, work

submission, etc.) each day.

6) Students can expect to devote an average of about 30-50 minutes to each class, each day.

This number is close to reflecting the actual total time spent on each subject during a regular

school day, when adding time spent on daily homework to in-class instructional time.

Page 8: CBA Digital Learning Program...Aug 18, 2020  · Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100% Remote Learning Break or 1-1 Student Support Using Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100%

7 |CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY | DIGITAL LEARNING PROGRAM |APRIL 2020

7) As such, students are encouraged to treat each day like a school day, completing work during

the designated school hours as if the school building was open. Students should take breaks

regularly and think carefully about the best environment in which to complete their daily work at

home.

8) Academic integrity is an essential component of the CBA community. Throughout the Digital

Learning Program, students are expected to adhere to the academic integrity policy in the

Student and Parent Handbook and in Appendix E. Prior to completing significantly weighted

assessments (e.g., classroom tests, mid-term exams, final exams, projects, research papers),

all students will sign a declaration affirming their respect for academic honesty and their

understanding of the Academic Integrity Policy at CBA.

Parent Collaboration

We encourage parents to discuss these guidelines and expectations with their child. We also ask for

your assistance in ensuring that your child remains committed to his/her daily work during this time

away from school. Your encouragement and oversight at home will help to ensure that your

son/daughter is accountable to the expectations we have for all of our students. The following are

some best practices to help support your child.

1) Help your child establish a regular schedule and stay engaged with their learning. While the

schedule in this document provides a recommended framework for your student's daily routine,

we recognize that there may be times when circumstances make it difficult to follow.

If your child cannot complete the assignment for a given class during the scheduled "period",

he/she should communicate directly with the classroom instructor. As always, close

communication with the teacher is strongly encouraged.

2) Create a dedicated learning space. Help your child identify a place at home that can serve as a

dedicated workspace for online learning, where they can “go to school” each day. This should

be a space that is clean, neat, and free of distractions (e.g.TV’s, video games) and one with a

strong WIFI signal and outlet access.

3) Encourage independence and allow for productive struggle. Online learning creates the perfect

opportunity for students to develop self-monitoring skills, independence, self-reliance, and

confidence. Stay engaged with your child’s learning, but allow them to grapple with problems

and come up with ideas for tackling them.

4) Refer your child back to their teachers for extra help if they seem stuck or discouraged and our

teachers will help your child reframe their questions and approaches.

5) Academic questions or concerns should be directed to your child’s teacher and/or counselor as

per usual.

Page 9: CBA Digital Learning Program...Aug 18, 2020  · Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100% Remote Learning Break or 1-1 Student Support Using Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100%

8 |CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY | DIGITAL LEARNING PROGRAM |APRIL 2020

6) Enable your child to maintain social contact with peers. It is important for your child to stay in

social contact with their friends and classmates during a campus closure, virtually or in-person,

as permitted.

7) Encourage physical activity and monitor student stress and well-being. Physical movement

and exercise are vital to maintaining health, reducing stress and anxiety, and improving

concentration and focus. Try to ensure that your child is getting the same amount of physical

exercise during remote learning periods as they are used to getting.

8) Remind your child to eat healthy foods and drink water throughout the day. We also ask that

parents monitor their child’s stress levels and reach out to the teacher or school counselor for

advice as needed.

Our Faculty Promise to You

1) Teachers will post all instructions, assignments, activities, links to videos, and learning

materials to myCBA; consistent updates regarding learning objectives and expectations will be

posted. These will be found under the bulletin board tab.

2) Teachers will hold regular email office hours - times when they will be available and accessible

via email to answer student questions (see daily schedule). School counselors and

administrators will be available electronically during these times as well.

3) Teachers will be available (virtually via Zoom) to students during regularly scheduled office

hours. All other emails and inquiries will be answered in a timely fashion. Teachers are not

required to be immediately available during scheduled class time, but may choose to use this

block for live presentations as they see fit.

4) Teachers continue to demonstrate a respect for their role as educators by maintaining

professional dress anytime they are visible to students.

5) Faculty members will provide a maximum of 4 hours of work per class per week. This includes:

time for reading/watching/listening, engaging with peers via discussion boards, attending live

class sessions, homework assignments, etc.

6) Attendance: Faculty members will ensure that each student is connected within their

classroom community. Faculty members will monitor attendance EACH DAY through the

submission of work, participation in discussion boards, interactive Google docs, live class

sessions, or responses to email.

7) Individual Student Virtual Support: Individual student support from faculty members is

available each day between 10:00 AM - 10:30AM and 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM and as needed, by

appointment. Students may schedule student support with a teacher, counselor, or student

support staff member. Students should email the staff member in advance to coordinate the

session. The potential for support through virtual sessions is at the teacher’s discretion and

Page 10: CBA Digital Learning Program...Aug 18, 2020  · Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100% Remote Learning Break or 1-1 Student Support Using Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100%

9 |CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY | DIGITAL LEARNING PROGRAM |APRIL 2020

may be conducted through a zoom video call. For privacy reasons, faculty members will not

text message or voice call with students via personal cell phone.

Prayer in the Digital Classroom

Daily prayer in the digital world is prepared by student members of the Campus Ministry Program. A

pop-up bulletin during login from 8:30 AM – 8:45 AM will link to the daily prayer on the CBA YouTube

channel. For a direct link, visit https://www.youtube.com/user/SyracuseCBA/playlists to access each

day’s prayer. Students are encouraged to continue to make prayer and reflection part of their daily

lives.

Individual Student Virtual Support

Individual student support from faculty members is available each day between 10:00 AM - 10:30AM

and 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM and as needed, by appointment. Students may schedule a virtual meeting

with a teacher, counselor, or student support staff member. Students should email the staff member

in advance to coordinate the session. Virtual support sessions will be conducted through a zoom

video call. During teacher office hours, teachers will be available by email to immediately answer

questions.

IEP and 504 Accommodations

Students with IEP or 504 accommodations should reference the “tips sheet” in the resources section

of myCBA or in the Appendix of this document. These guidelines will assist students in leveraging

technology to meet their academic needs.

Technology Loan Program

We understand that having multiple family members working from home could put stress on the

number of personal computers, laptops, or chromebooks in your household. In addition, for families

without internet access in their home, CBA has purchased mobile hotspots. Please email Mr. Legler

at [email protected] to reserve a chromebook or mobile hotspot on loan from CBA.

Student Expectations for Zoom Classroom Meetings

Students are expected to maintain classroom expectations from in-person educational settings. The following guidelines will help promote a positive digital environment and maximize student learning.

1) Students should be dressed appropriately in dress down guidelines or better for interactive-video lessons or any other platform where the student is visible to the teacher and/or other students.

2) Students, while in the interactive-video environment, will participate in prayer and reflection as part of the teacher’s lesson.

3) Students are expected to conduct themselves as they would in a classroom with inappropriate behavior subject to discipline as described in the Student Handbook.

4) Students are expected to refrain from using their cell phones during interactive-video lessons.

5) When joining interactive-video lessons, students will be respectful of their teachers and fellow classmates. Students will be professional and courteous when speaking during class time and will refrain from:

a. speaking over the lecturer and classmates. b. causing a distraction

c. chatting inappropriately during classes and meetings

6) Students are expected to participate in meaningful conversation and stay on topic. Student participation will only be academic in nature or within the context of the interactive video lesson.

7) Students should endeavor to participate in interactive-video conferences in dedicated learning

spaces. Students should identify places that can serve as dedicated workspaces where students can “go to school” each day. These should be spaces that are neat and free of distractions.

CBA Zoom Teacher Checklist

Go to http://zoom.us and click on Sign In.

You should use your CBA Google (Gmail or Google App) credentials to login at the bottom of the page. Schedule a meeting with a colleague to ensure functionality and the proper settings prior to scheduling an official class session.

Click on the Schedule icon. This will open the scheduler window. Select your meeting settings.

Enable each of the following features: 1) Require a password when scheduling new meetings

A password will be generated when scheduling a meeting and participants require the password to join the meeting. It is CBA policy that all Zoom meetings are password protected.

2) Mute participants upon entry Automatically mute all participants when they join the meeting. The host controls whether participants can unmute themselves.

3) Auto saving chats Automatically save all in-meeting chats so that hosts do not need to manually save the text of the chat after the meeting starts.

4) Allow host to put attendee on hold Allow hosts to temporarily remove an attendee from the meeting.

5) Breakout room Allow host to split meeting participants into separate, smaller rooms.

6) Waiting room Attendees cannot join a meeting until a host admits them individually from the waiting room. It is CBA policy that all Zoom meetings enable “Waiting Room” to provide controlled access to Zoom meetings.

7) Screen sharing

Allow “Host Only” to share their screen or content during meetings. Who can share?

Host Only All Participants Who can start sharing when someone else is sharing?

Host Only All Participants 8) Show a "Join from your browser" link

Allow participants to bypass the Zoom application download process, and join a meeting directly from their browser. This is a workaround for participants who are unable to download, install, or run applications. Note that the meeting experience from the browser is limited.

Page 13: CBA Digital Learning Program...Aug 18, 2020  · Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100% Remote Learning Break or 1-1 Student Support Using Virtual Conferencing when CBA is in 100%

12 |CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY | DIGITAL LEARNING PROGRAM |APRIL 2020

Disenable each of the following features: 1) Join before host

Allow participants to join the meeting before the host arrives. 2) Private chat

Allow meeting participants to send a private 1:1 message to another participant. 3) Far end camera control

Allow another user to take control of your camera during a meeting.

To share your Zoom meeting information, you may email the Zoom room code or post it within myCBA. If using google calendar, you can click “Make this a Zoom meeting.” If using google calendar, be sure to “X” out google meets and call-in information to eliminate confusion. Zoom meeting information should never be shared in a public domain such as a website, or social media account.

Log in a few minutes before class starts by going to the https://zoom.us page, clicking the Sign in button, clicking Meetings in the left menu, and finding the meeting for that class.

Check to make sure your camera feed is working, your microphone is working, and that you have opened any files (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, documents, etc.) you want to share.

Double check to ensure that grades, email, and private documents are not open and thus will not be shared accidentally.

Prepare prayer for each Zoom sessions.

Ensure that dress is professional.

Record all sessions to the Zoom Cloud.

When recording, make sure you click the record button only when you are ready to start. Avoid recording personal conversations.

At the beginning of the Zoom class, teachers should clarify the manner in which teacher-to-student interaction and student-to-student interaction will take place in an interactive-video environment. This will involve students who are temporarily muted, students with raised hands, students called on to speak, and students typing questions or comments in the chat feature.

When you are finished with the meeting, make sure to first end the recording by clicking Stop Recording. Then, end the meeting by clicking the End Meeting button on the bottom left.

After processing the video, Zoom will send you an email. It will send a subsequent email after processing the audio transcript. If you do not receive these emails, sign into zoom.us and click Recordings in the left menu to see if Zoom has completed the processing of your recording. The Zoom meeting can now be posted within myCBA. Zoom sessions should not be posted in a public domain (website, social media).

Appendix C: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1) “I am having technology issues, who should I contact?”

Students who experience technology issues should first inform their classroom teacher. After

informing their classroom teacher, students should email Mr. D’Agostino from our technology

department at [email protected].

2) “I am having difficulty completing all of the workload, how can I achieve a better

balance?”

Students who are having difficulty completing the required assignments on time should inform their

classroom teacher. This may be due to the length of the assignment, a personal situation, technology

difficulties, illness, or an emergency. A sample email may read:

Dear Mr. Smith,

I have been working to complete the assignment that is due today by 4:00 PM. I have currently spent

approximately 2 hours on the assignment. Could you offer some advice as to how long this assignment

should take or how I could complete it in a more reasonable amount of time?

Thank you,

Jane Doe

3) “I have contacted my teachers but I am still having difficulty completing all of my work.

What else can I do?”

If students have contacted their teacher, they should contact their guidance counselor for additional

advice. Their counselor will initiate the proper communications to help resolve the problem.

4) “I am finding the classroom material difficult to comprehend and need additional

support, who do I contact?

Students who need additional assistance should email their teacher to schedule a Zoom session.

This is similar to a student seeking additional assistance before or after school in a traditional setting.

Recommendation

Copies of class notes All supporting notes/presentations should be uploaded to the class page in myCBA and clearly identified.

Clarification of directions

Teachers should provide clear directions for all assignments, and be available via email to answer clarifying questions as they relate to directions.

Repeated directions Teachers should recommend that all students re-read directions with the option of asking for clarification via email if needed.

Checks for understanding

Teachers should reach out to students to make sure they understand what is being taught and the expectations of the assignment.

Testing Tests & quizzes should be administered using the myCBA assessment platform.

Location of minimal distraction (testing)

Students should be reminded to take tests in a location within their residence that is minimally distracting.

Asking for clarification (testing)

Student should write down the question, continue to complete the test, and then email the teacher any questions. Teacher will respond and re-open the test for the student to complete the unfinished questions.

Extended time, 1.5 (testing)

It is recommended that when setting the time on an assessment through myCBA, teachers provide the extended time to all students with a disclaimer. i.e. “This test is intended to be completed in 40 minutes, however, it has been extended to 60 minutes to accommodate students with extended testing time. Please use your time to complete the test accordingly.”

Test read (testing) Students can access Kurzweil from home. Mrs. Jordan has provided those students with directions to have the test read to them through the software. Teachers will inform Mrs. Jordan when they will be giving a test for students with this accommodation.
