From the Vice PrincipalIn Mr Kenny’s absence, I welcome
everyone in our community to Advent
Term 4, a term that flies by quickly, and
also sees a changing of the guard in
student leadership. Mr Kenny is currently
at a conference in Johannesburg. This
conference, which he is attending with
Mr Correia, is looking at ways schools
can expand their involvement with the
Edmund Rice Beyond Borders initiative that
Mr Kenny wrote about when he visited
Kenya last year. It will be followed by a
Principal’s Conference in Kolkata in 2016.
As some of you may know, I am always
encouraging Shaun to try new things (sky-
diving, bungee jumping, abseiling), and
visit destinations where safety can be a
concern. Shaun shows judicious judgement
in refraining from some of those
pursuits, but never thinks twice about his
involvement with EREA initiatives. The
dedication and motivation our Principal
shows in embracing the work and legacy
of the Brothers outside the comfort of
the College campus is outstanding. A truly
authentic Catholic School in the Edmund
Rice Tradition must always seek ways to
bring the reality of those less fortunate
into the lives of those more fortunate, so
as to effect the changes needed to make
this a more just world.
I have just been watching the Graduation
video that is traditionally shown at the
final ceremony for Year 12s in October.
It is always a melancholy task, especially
when one reflects on just how quickly
the time has gone by. When one gets to
my age, time seems more precious, and
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 1 Term 4 | Page 3
the big questions weigh heavily. Where
did I succeed? Where did I fail? Did I do
enough? What is my legacy? Interestingly
these are questions I put to the Year 12
cohort at the beginning of each year,
and more often than not, they respond
positively. In writing this article, one thing
that was very evident when watching
the video was the changes in fashion and
style, especially with the boys’ hairstyles.
Most boys still conform to the ‘CBC
haircut guidelines’ but this year I found
the resistance to self-managing the
commitments the boys and their parents
made at enrolment to be a little higher
than usual. The haircuts in themselves are
not the real reason for me writing these
few words, rather trying to work out the
underlying reason for boys needing to
have a haircut that is seen by their peers
as acceptable, or cool, and how that end
trumps the value of their word.
In 1972 Irving Janis, a research psychologist
from Yale University, published an
influential book on ‘groupthink’. He based
his research on the Bay of Pigs invasion,
where all the Generals and Admirals in the
planning room started feeding off each
other, and invasion of Cuba was imminent.
He states in his book, “The more amiability
and esprit de corps there is among the
members of a policy-making ingroup, the
greater the danger that independent
critical thinking will be replaced by
groupthink, which is likely to result in
irrational and dehumanizing actions
directed against outgroups.” Luckily for the
world, JFK remained the calmest man in
the room, and a nuclear war was averted.
Groupthink, or normative conformity, can
be a danger to our sons and daughters,
where their need to fit in can sometimes
override common sense, and the values
parents have spent years immersing their
children in may be tossed out in a split
second.
These are only my humble opinions, and
I’m sure many dedicated, and erudite
readers can pick holes in many of my
‘world according to Dom’ missives, but
I do know that CBC Fremantle does try
and be counter-cultural, and many of the
messages the boys get here, they will
not get anywhere else. If our message
resonates with yours, and I assume it
does, we are all best served when ALL the
commitments you and the boys make are
fulfilled, and even better served when
they are fulfilled without being asked.
As an adult, I’m sure you cannot prioritise
your commitments, each should have
equal worth. A commitment to take your
two year old to the park is as important
as a commitment to sign a $700,000
mortgage. It is even nobler when you reach
on the commitment when others are not,
or telling you it is not important to do so.
At CBC, I would like to see the word ‘rules’
disappear over time, to be replaced
with ‘agreed commitments’. When
you, as a parent, support these agreed
commitments, be they as petty as a haircut
or the colour of your son’s sports shoes,
or as important as respecting others and
doing one’s best, you build a strength and
resilience in your son, and as a result build
his capacity to think as an individual, and
base his actions on the conscience he has
developed primarily with your guidance,
with a little support from the College.
This is the best insurance we can have as
parents for the future safety and positive
development of our sons. My wish for
all your boys is that they remain true to
their commitments, avoid the danger of
Groupthink, and remain the calmest man
in the room.
Mr Domenic Burgio
Vice Principal

Football boots bootyBy Paul Jardine-Clarke
When you get asked to support a cause for the disadvantaged,
there really is no option but to instantly get behind it. Thus, when
Mrs Emslie asked the Year 11 trial Prefects for a coordinator for
the Edmund Rice Centre’s Football Boot Appeal, I couldn’t say no.
With the support of Miss Bowran, in three weeks we collected
42 pair of football boots for children of all ages. This effort by
the students has been greater than what I ever could have
expected, and it goes without saying that the kindness of the CBC
gentleman was truly on display.
The Edmund Rice Centre in Mirrabooka holds sporting events for
the children there every weekend, with the kind support of many
sporting associations, including the West Coast Eagles, who run
football activities. The Eagles also supplied jerseys, shorts and
socks for the children to play in. The assistance from organisations
like the Eagles made it clear to me that this was a cause worth
supporting, and that we could make these disadvantaged children
feel all the more special.
What has overjoyed me the most about the support from the CBC
community is the quality of the boots that were donated. They
were not just drapes of leather with muddy streaks and torn shoe
laces. They were all well-kept boots that were of the best possible
quality for second hand property; some were even brand new. It
is truly humbling to have received such wonderful support to this
cause. It is important that we also thank Palmyra Demons JFC,
who sourced and donated a large number of boots. Their support
really drove this whole campaign.
Lastly, thank you to all the other CBC boys who donated their
boots. Your support has not gone unnoticed, and you have made
many young children feel like Brownlow medallists!

Hudson Lillis, Anton La Macchia and Flynn Hamilton, all in Year 8, volunteered to assist
Relay For Life Fremantle in raising more than $100,000 for Cancer Council WA.
On the Friday night, Hudson and Flynn helped with the event, running errands, moving and
sorting items, and were there bright and early on Saturday again helping with setup and
continued throughout the day. Anton did an outstanding job as resident DJ and kept the
crowd entertained with his amazing skills. In his few breaks, he was found filming the event
or helping out in the information tent.
This was Relay for Life Fremantle’s second year. Next year the event will be combined with
Rockingham will be known as Relay For Life South Metro.
