Introduction
Candle holders have moved away from being mere functional items helping candles to burn well: they are embellishing
and adding value to the candle and as such have become decorative accessories in their own right. European imports are
growing and candle holders just about tick every box of what consumers need and appreciate: they make great gifts, add
atmosphere to the home, also during the festive seasons, can be used throughout the home and outside, and allow the
consumer to be creative too. We see much room for growth, still, in this product group.
Product description
Candle holders are decorative accessories that are functionally related to the product group of candles, which are also
classified as home accessories. This group further holds items such as picture frames and vases.
Quality
Functionality
The primary function of candle holders is to support the candle which goes inside. The most popular types of candles are
tapers (dipped candles), with a diameter of 22mm, pillar candles (cylindrical, moulded candles), measuring 6.8cm or more,
and tea lights, with a 59mm diameter. These diameters determine the size of the hole of the candle holders. Needless to
say, to offer a relevant product, manufacturers of candle holders must be aware of what the candle industry offers in
terms of types of candles.
For safety reasons, candle holders must be protected from fire hazards by ensuring that the flame of the candle cannot
burn the holders and that the holder is stable. Often a metal cap is inserted into wooden candle holders to prevent a fire
(see Requirements, below).
Material
Candle holders come in any material, ranging from wood, ceramics, metal and synthetics, and forms an aspect of the
design and look and feel of the item. They can be produced by hand and industrially.
Design
From functional basics, supporting the candle almost in an anonymous way, candle holders have become an expressive
home accessory that sometimes make the candle ‘anonymous’. This means that the level of design has increased,
supported to design effort in shape, decoration, functionality and use of material. Top designers and brands are clearly not
afraid to make their mark on this product group anymore, and it has pushed the candle holder up from the lower end of
the market into mid and premium segments (see Markets and Segments, below).
Labelling
The labelling on the export packing of candle holders facilitates the logistical process. Product labelling is a function of
marketing communication.
Information on the outer packing of candle holders should correspond to the packing list sent to the importer. The
labels for candle holders on the outer carton or packing should include the following:
o Producer
o Consignee
o Material used
o Quantity
o Size
o Volume
o Caution signs
On the product label, EAN or Barcodes are widely used within Europe.
Use the English language for labelling of the outer packing to facilitate transportation handling. Use the language of
the destination market for the consumer packaging. That is, unless your buyer has indicated otherwise.
Please note, your buyer will specify what information they need, both on the outer cartons, the product labels or the
item itself (logos, 'made in...'). This forms part of the order specifications.
Information on the product or product label usually supports the reseller in communicating to the end consumer. If
the importer or reseller has a brand identity (e.g. logo, strap line), the importer is likely to prefer that information on
the product label to any exporter’s brand identity.

Packing and Packaging
Export packing serves to facilitate the logistical process; consumer packaging is a function of marketing communication (to
the end consumer).
Proper packing of candle holders minimises the risk of breakage and scratches through shocks, as these can
be fragile items – in glass, ceramics etc. The fragility of the item determines the type of extent of the packing of the
products for shipment. Packing should prevent individual candle holders inside a carton from damaging each other
and the cartons themselves when they are stacked inside the container.
Packing needs to be of easy-to-handle dimensions and weight. Standards here are often related to labour
regulations at point of destination and will have to be specified by the buyer. Cartons are usually palletised for air or
sea transport and exporters are requested to maximise pallet space.
In the use of packing materials, the balance is between using maximum protection and avoiding excess materials
(waste disposal is a cost to the buyer) or shipping ‘air’. Exporters can reduce the amount and diversity of packing
materials by:
o partitioning inside the cartons using folded cardboard,
o wrapping corrugated cardboard around the candle holders,
o matching inner boxes and outer cartons better and standardising the sizes of each,
o considering packing and logistical requirements already at the design stage of the products (e.g. avoiding odd
shapes or sculptural elements in the plates decoration),
o asking their buyer for alternatives.
Consumer packaging for candle holders adds value to the product in the form of branded gift wrapping. The gift box
can be the original export one or a box provided by the retailer. Candle holders themselves can function as gift
wraps, enveloping moulded candles and adding value to them in offering decorative value (Picture 3: A Stunning Gift;

What is the demand for candle holders in Europe?
Developing Countries are Europe’s main suppliers of candle holders. After some fluctuations, European imports of candle
holders are expected to continue to grow. Europe’s leading importer of candle holders from Developing Countries, the
United Kingdom, is an especially interesting market. As important trade hubs for candle holders with considerable imports
from Developing Countries, Germany and the Netherlands are also interesting target markets.
Trade statistics
These trade statistics give an indication of European trade in non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings including candle
holders.
Tips:
To facilitate the logistical process, be aware of your buyer’s position in the supply chain and the related
needs (e.g. importer-exporters may have different needs from on-line retailers). Make sure you
receive and understand the entire set of specifications as related to the product, its packing, packaging
and labelling, all of which is part and parcel of the Purchase Order. Offer the buyer any alternatives
that may be more effective.
To facilitate marketing, be aware of the buyer’s needs in terms of design level, background stories and
gift packaging (branded or not).
European Packaging and packaging waste legislation restricts the use of certain heavy metals, among
other requirements. Europe also has requirements for Wood packaging materials used for transport
materials (WPM) such as packing cases, boxes, crates, drums, pallets, box pallets, and dunnage. Make
sure your packing meets these requirements.

European imports of candle holders fluctuated somewhat between 2010 (€ 381 million) and 2014 (€ 422 million),
resulting in an average annual growth rate of 2.6%. In 2014 however, imports grew strongly with 19%! This positive
trend is predicted to continue at a moderate rate.
Developing Countries are Europe’s main suppliers of candle holders, with a market share of 72%. These imports
increased with a similar pattern between 2010 (€ 95 million) and 2014 (€ 208 million), with an average annual
growth rate of 2.5%. Again, growth was especially strong in 2014 with 23%. This trend is also predicted to continue
at a moderate rate.
Germany and the United Kingdom are by far the leading importers of candle holders in Europe, with € 100 million and
€ 95 million respectively. These countries are also Europe’s main importers of candle holders from Developing
Countries, with the United Kingdom sourcing 92% in Developing Countries!
The strong performance of Developing Country candle holder suppliers in the United Kingdom is evidenced further by
its growth of € 37 million between 2010 and 2014. In Germany however, these imports declined slightly with € 3.1
million.
European imports of candle holders from Developing Countries are dominated by China, with € 252 million in 2014.
Another leading supplier from Developing Countries is India with € 41 million, followed at considerable distance by
Vietnam with € 5.8 million.

Germany and the United Kingdom are by far the largest importers of candle holders in Europe. With its

European production of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings grew between 2009 (€ 141 million) and 2013
(€ 174 million), peaking in 2012 (€ 181 million), at an average annual growth rate of 5.3%. Consumption of non-
electrical lamps and lighting fittings, which is much higher than their production, also grew between 2009
(€ 314 million) and 2013 (€ 375 million), peaking in 2012 (€ 383 million), at an average annual growth rate of
4.6%.
Germany is Europe’s main producer of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings with € 34 million, followed by The
Netherlands (€ 33 million), Italy (€ 29 million) and Poland (€ 19 million).
European consumption of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings is also highest in Germany (€ 82 million), followed
by the United Kingdom (€ 66 million), the Netherlands (€ 38 million) and Italy (€ 35 million).

Predictions of GDP and private consumption expenditure are important indicators for the European home decoration
market. The sector is closely linked to economic conditions; when money is tight consumers postpone replacing non-
essential items in the home until there is room in their disposable income again.
Between 2014 and 2016, European GDP and private consumption expenditures are expected to increase. This means
that consumption of luxury and decorative products is likely to rise. Especially in emerging markets, an increase in
GDP creates room for this type of spending. Due to saturation, growth in consumption will be moderate for mature
markets.

What trends offer opportunities on the European market for candle holders?
Trend in Time: From Functional to Emotional
When candles were still primarily light-givers, candle holders were also purely functional: they held the candle and made
sure it burnt well, safely and, in some cases, helped carrying the candle around the house (Picture 4: Antique Candlestick,
source: Dutch State Agency for Cultural Heritage).
With the advent of, first, gas and then electrical lighting in European homes in the early 20th Century, the candle holder
slowly extended its basic function with some more emotional features: it became a decorative accessory and developed a
variety of different segments, as we will see below.
Candle Holders Gone Gift
Gifting is an important consumer need in interior products. From stand-alone items, candle holders have physically merged
with candles to add to the gift and decorative value of candles. Especially scented candles increasingly come in decorated
containers of glass, metal or other materials, usually with branding. In such cases, the candle and its holder make one
coherent design statement, each component adding value to the other and together becoming the perfect gift. (picture 5:

European consumers are on a constant quest to improve themselves, both in body and mind. This expresses itself in the
desire for a better health, for greater knowledge, and the development of new skills. Candles have featured in spiritual
rituals (religious or otherwise) as well as in Spa and yoga contexts, both at home and away. Candle holders have added
value to and in combination with candles, either by adding grandeur (e.g. church candle holders are large and supremely

Make Your Own – Consumer as Creator
Candle holders are proving very suitable to satisfy the consumer’s need to express his/her own creativity in interior design,
rather than work from pre-set offers from the industry. Consumers want to ‘make’ their own candle holders or at least
arrange them in their own way. Examples are:
Candle holders that have components that can be arranged and re-arranged by the consumer to form different
shapes (picture 7: Playing with candle holders, source: Bo Concept).
Candles holders that come with several options in terms of shape, colour and dimensions, offer consumers an
opportunity to express their individuality.
Candle holders that can be ‘finished’ by the consumer herself, for instance in the form of plain wood that can be
painted or with accessories added that allows the consumer to decorate the item.
Candle holders that can be adjusted, for instance by moving the ‘arms’ of the candle holders around (picture 8:

Additionally, the consumer is quite happy to mix and match different styles, or new purchases with flea market finds.
Candle Holders, a Seasonal Choice
More than a trend, rather a tradition and a continued influence on the buying behaviour of European consumers is
seasonality. Christmas forms the major peak, but candles and candle holders also feature during Easter and specific
occasions such as birthdays and weddings. Not only are candles burnt extensively during Christmas and the run-on
towards it, and all available candle holders are unearthed from cellars and cupboards, but the candle holders are part of
the Christmas decoration. As such, the shapes and colours will represent the well-known Christmas imagery, including
stars, Christmas trees, or figurative representations from the Father Christmas or Nativity stories. What is more, Christmas

Fun and Play
An important driver behind consumer needs generally in Home, different forms of humour are also found in candle holders
and will be here to stay, especially because it connects so deeply with the consumer’s emotions.

Tips:
Candle holders (with or without candle) form suitable gifts. Think about the various target groups for
gifting (gift for men are rare!), gifting occasions, study consumer prices of gifts (online retailers will
provide insight) and work those back to FOB prices, develop gift wrapping and consider on-line
platforms positioning on gifts.
Study the wellness trend and the functional of candles in this context (internet). Brainstorm about
suitable candle holders supporting the consumer in his/her quest for mental and physical
improvement. Reflect how your own culture possesses rituals for mental and physical nurturing and
what artefacts (including candle holders) and styles are available from this that can be transformed
into suitable offers for the European market.
Tip:
Leave something to the imagination of the consumer that is craving to ‘participate’ in the making
process, by offering components, options and other ways to make the consumer ‘create’ or ‘finish’
their candle holder and as such express their personal taste. This is a deep driver of consumer needs
in Home that will only deepen (an extreme option being 3D printing, which might become available to
consumers soon, too).
Tip:
Those already in the business of candle holders should consider seasonality an opportunity to create
additional turnover. Moreover, Christmas decoration, including the candles and candle holders, is
subject to short-term trends (esp. in colour and theme) and impulse buying. Both are influences that
consumers generally find hard to resist, such that the replacement value of seasonal candle holders is
high: they may not be on display for years on end.

combinations of materials creating tactile effects (e.g. warm and cold, rough and smooth).
unsophisticated ‘raw’ statements: candle holders made of concrete, steel, copper, hammered brass (picture 15:

Elegant, smoothly finished, polished, wood-turned wooden candle holders.
Coherent and convincing lines of matching themes or with one binding design element.
A Fair Amount of Fair
We are not seeing much green offer in terms of recycling or a responsible use of materials in candle holders, but there are
exceptions: (picture 17: Reclaimed Pulley Candle Holders, source: Nkuku). This is compensated by an ample offer of
candle holders from the fair trade segment. These range from rather clichéd-ethnic styles to candle holders with
contemporary styles and relevance.
Into the Garden
The candle has made its entry into the garden, and the candle holder has followed suit. We see oversized candles and XL
holders in durable materials ranging from stone, treated wood to synthetics. Lanterns are a popular item, preferably
containing candles for the sake of romance. In and outside, candles are floating in holders of glass and other materials. To

Think collections! In designing a line of candle holders, start from one design aspect (e.g. a shape,
form, colour, theme) and work that out in a clear and attractive line of items. Study how brands in the

Responsible consumerism is increasing, and trends inform us that to be seen as a ‘green’ consumer
adds status in the eyes of that consumer’s peer group. The connection of ‘green’ to the consumer’s
status means a connection to one of the most basic and core consumer needs, making responsible
consumerism a trend that will stay and grow. Consider whether you can recycle, reuse or reduce in
developing candle holders. Given the increasing greening in other home accessories, we can expect
this also to occur in candle holders.

Candle holders are a decorative accessory that is carried by a variety of retailers across the various segments (see below),
from hypermarkets, garden centres, general home and furniture stores to department stores.

E-commerce in home decoration is increasing, often as a multi-channel approach combining online and offline retail.
Candles holders are excellently suited to this due to their gift nature and their limited weight.
Market segments
The product group of candle holders is well segmented: we are finding them in high-, mid- and lower-market contexts.
Also, a good number of buying motives apply, creating further sub-segmentation. At the lower end, candles holders are
functional basics, usually mass-produced and inexpensive, for holding tea lights or basic cylindrical candles. They are
available at hyper- and supermarkets, garden centres and generally any non-specific outlets where interior items are part
of broader assortments of furniture, fashion and food. At mid-market, trend (esp. colour) and decorative value at
affordable prices are important buying motives. Consumers here are creating a specific atmosphere in their homes (e.g. a
nostalgic 'cottage' style or a natural style), and the candle holders needs to fit. Prices are still sensitive, although in mid-
high consumers choose what expresses their identity and are therefore less focused on price. In mid-market, distribution is

an everyday basic or a decorative item in the home that is prone to be replaced when a new season announces itself.
Materials generally are of low value and production is industrial, to keep the item affordable. Supermarkets, garden
centres and any form of intensive distribution is important as the consumer will not make too much effort to shop around
for their candle holder. In mid market, consumers want to create a particular atmosphere in their homes such as a

cottage, natural or colonial style, and the decorative value of the candle holders needs to match this chosen style. Prices
and designs are accessible; distribution through mid-market department stores, chains, and also online. Gift buying forms
an important buying motive in mid market. At the higher levels of the market, candle holders are identity markers and
consumers will make a well-considered choice, being happy to spend good money (€50 till well into a hundred euros) for
an eye-catcher or talking point on the table or the living room. In this segment, the candle holder is far more important

Pitch your prices well, in line with your positioning in the market. As one of your four Ps (price,
product, promotion and place), you must study which price bandwidth is appropriate in your segment
Avoid simply adding a fixed percentage of margin on top of your cost price, as this may be either too
high or too low for your target market, but study what you candle holder can take.
