IT & BANKING What is a Computer: a)The word “computer” comes from the word “compute” which means to calculate. A computer is normally considered to be calculating device that can perform arithmetic operations at enormous speed. It is an electronic device that accepts data as input, process the data using some predefined instructions (called programs) and gives the desired result. Characteristics of a Computer: 1) Speed ,2) Accuracy 3) Memory- It store data for unlimited time.4) Diligence- Unlike human beings, a computer is free from monotony, tiredness, lack of concentration etc, 5)No I.Q- It possesses no intelligence of its own,6) No feelings- Computers are devoid of emotions Types of Computer:-a)Super Computer b) Mainframe Computer c)Mini Computer, d)Micro Computer or Personal Computer(PC) Hardware: The physical part of a computer, which we can touch or see. Ex- Keyboard, Monitor, etc Software : The programs through which we can operate a computer. Ex-Windows, Finacle etc Input devices : Input devices are basically devices that are used to give input to the computer. Ex-Keyboard,Mouse,Scanner etc. Process: is the brain of the computer Ex- CPU . Output devices: is used to get the result from the computer Ex-Monitor, Printer etc. Storage: Is used to store data, program and information for future use. Ex- Hard Disk, Floppy Disk, RAM etc Keyboard:-On most computer, a keyboard is the primary text input device. It uses the same key arrangement as the standard typewriter. The standard arrangement of alphabetic keys is known as QWERTY keyboard. Mouse: It is a simple hand held input device. It has three Operations: Click: select, Double Click: Open,& Drag: move Monitor:-Monitor is a specialized, high resolution screen, similar to a high quality television. The actual display screen is made up of red, green and blue dots that are illuminated by an electron beam from behind. Printer:-Printers are used to get a printout or hard copy of the data or result. Types of Printers: Dot matrix Printer, Inkjet Printers, Laser Printers Storage Device: There are two type of storage 1) Primary storage(or main memory),2)Secondary storage(or mass memory). Primary Memory: Primary memory is faster and expensive than secondary memory. Example of primary memory are: a)RAM(Random access memory)-Volatile in nature, b)ROM(Read Only Memory)-Non-volatile in nature. c) PROM-Programmable ROM, d) EPROM-Erasable PROM . Secondary Memory: It is used as mass storage device. It is very slow to read or write and less expensive. Example:a)Hard Disk,b) Floppy disk: stores 1.44 MB of data, c) Magnetic Tape(or Tar):stores 10 GB to 50 GB, d)CD(Compact Disk):- stores 700 MB of data e) DVD(Digital Video/Versatile Disk):-stores 4 to 17 GB of data Memory Units: BIT- It is the smallest unit of data used by a computer. Processor:-Processor takes the commands from the user and execute the commands and give the results to the user. It is called as the brain of the computer. It is made of up millions of transistors and electronic gates. It has two parts,1)CU-Control Unit-it sends only control signals to controls all the operations of CPU,2)ALU- Arithmetic and Logic Unit- It is responsible for all arithmetic calculations and logical operations Switch Mode Power Supply Unit (SMPS):It is used to convert AC to DC for running the computer. Computer Virus :A virus is a destructive program whose main aim is to destroy other valuable programs and data files. It spread by infecting files. Ex- Code Red , Melissa , Lion etc. Types of Virus: Trojan Horses: A Trojan Horse is a program which has some hidden, generally multi-functionality that the user does not expect or know about. One function could be to execute a virus. Trojans appear to be anti-virus software, but actually

Page 37: Cbs Mock Test

37themselves execute virus code. A widely accepted distinction between viruses and Trojans, however, is that Trojans do not self-replicate. Droppers: Droppers are programs that install viruses on computers. The purpose is often that the droppers is not infected with a virus, and thus will not be detected by anti-virus software. Some droppers also have a component which can connect to the internet and download updates to the virus. Backdoors: A backdoor is a program or a set of related programs that a hacker installs on the victim computer to allow access to the system at a later time. A backdoor's goal is to remove the evidence of initial entry from the systems log. But a "nice" backdoor will allow a hacker to retain access to a machine it has penetrated even if the intrusion factor has in the meantime been detected by the system administrator. Resetting passwords, changing disk access permissions or fixing original security holes in the hope of remedying the problem may not help. Worm: A worm is a specific type of virus that propagates itself across many creating copies of itself in each computer's memory. Spyware: Spyware and other unwanted software refers to software that performs certain tasks on the comuter, typically without user consent. This may include giving user advertising or collecting personal information about him. Adware: A software application that can display advertising banners while the program is running or via some other triggering mechanism is called adware. File Infector: This is the most common virus. It adds virus code to the regular programming code within program file. When infected program is run, other program files also get infected. Boot sector Virus: This virus attaches itself to the boot sector of the disk. This sector is the part of the disk where start-up instructions and the file allocation table are kept. This sector is read and loaded into the memory every time the disk is booted. This virus is also very dangerous. Symptoms of Virus Infection:-1) System slow 2) Increase in number of files in HDD. 3) Program taking longer than normal to load 4) Program or file corruption or disappearance. 5) Reduction in the amount of RAM available 6) Restarted automatically. Prevention :Use a good anti virus software(Norton Anti virus). Do not use pirated and other unauthorized software. Do not use floppy of cds without checking carefully for viruses. Do not leave the floppy disks unlocked. Do not use Internet in a network environment. Make regular backup of important data. Update your anti-virus software regularly. Do not open unknown E-mail attachments. For Internet use setup a firewall in your machine. Action to be taken in the Event of a Suspected Virus Attack: If a computer system begins to behave in a strange

manner, it is possible that the problem could be caused by an equipment malfunction, but it is also possible that the problem could be caused by a computer virus. If you do not know, assume the worst; assume it is a virus until proven otherwise. If a computer virus is suspected, do the following: (a) Plug out from the Network. (b) Stop using the computer immediately. Do not turn U off. Leave it so that the behavior which causes you to suspect a virus can be examined by an other support person (c) Take up with Regional/Zonal IT Team/Vendor.(d) Place a message on the affected computer to indicate that it must not be used. (e) Gather any floppy disk/CD-ROMs which may have been used on the affected computer, label them clearly and put them away f or subsequent checking.(f) Complete the Computer Abuse Report for Audit, taking guidance from IT Team at controlling Offices. (g) If a user receives an e-mail and suspects that, the same contains a virus, do no open it or any attachment. What is E-Commerce?:-E-Commerce (Electronic Commerce ) means buying and selling of goods or services though the Internet. Computer Network: In a computer network , two or more computers are linked together for communicating data and sharing resources.Advantages:1) Information sharing- We can share information among all the user in that network(Share file and folder ), 2) Resource sharing – We can share a printer or scanner with other Department., 3) Communication- We can communicate with other user by sending message to them, 4) Reduce cost- It make a paper less office as all the letters and information can be get electronically. Network Models: There are two types of network models:1) Peer-to-peer networks-All computers on a peer network are equal in terms of authority and usage. All can use others resources without any restriction. 2) Client Server Architecture - In client server technology one computer is server and others are clients. The server decide who can get the resource at what time. The clients can communicate with each other through the server. Types of Networks: There are basically three type of networks present,1)Local Area Networks(LAN)- A system of networked computers and other resources that are in a small geographical area (i.e. in one building), 2)Metropolitan Area Network(MAN) – This type of networking is restricted within one City, 3)Wide Area Network(WAN)- This type of network in with a country or around the World (Ex- Internet, Railway Reservation network) LAN Topologies: LAN topologies defined the manner in which network devices are organized. These are A)BUS,B)RING, c)STAR d) MESH LAN Hardware: In addition to computers , the hardware components needed to create LAN include a) Network cable, b) Network Interface Cards for each computer, c) Cable Interface Unit(HUB or Switch), d) Repeater Network Cable: The network cable can be twisted–pair cable ,coaxial cable, or fiber optics cable. Twisted-pair cable costs the least but is the slowest. This interface can destroy data. Coaxial cables are faster than twisted pair up to 100 mbps. Fiber-optic transmit data using light pulses with very high efficiency. Fiber optics can carry massive amounts of data.

Page 38: Cbs Mock Test

38Network Interface Card(NIC): The network interface cards convert the data on the computer’s internal bus to conform to the protocol standards of the network architecture. Cable Interface Unit(HUB or Switch): The cable interface unit , sometimes called a hub , sends and receives signals on the network cable. This unit is a box outside the computer. Hub is a central point in a network Hubs are used to create a physical star network while maintaining the logical bus configuration of the LAN INTERNET:- The Internet is a worldwide network of networks. Internet is a window to global information super highway. It is a collection of independent smaller networks and other connected machines spanning the entire globe. Internet Applications: (1)World Wide Web(WWW)- The www consists of web pages where you can find out any type of information you want. This is a large collection of graphical and text pages stored in different server in all over the world.(2) Electronic Mail(E-Mail)-You can send and receive electronic mail through Internet. Prevention: (i) Vaccines: - A type of programme that vaccinate computers against virus. ii) Password:- A password protected computer system require the user to enter a password which is usually a combination of alpha-numeric characters (A-Z and 0-9). If password is valid the computer grants access else access is denied to the unauthorized user. The longer is the password, the safer it is. Halting Trespassers: In order to restrict illegal access to a computer, some sophisticated defense is used instead of simple password. For example, special voice-recorders can analyze the voice of a trespasser and check it against a database containing the voice-patterns of valid users. COMPUTER SECURITY The computer security can be provided by use of physical methods and by use of logical methods. As regal physical methods, the banks can provide guards, video surveillance, biometric methods, locking up machines and terminals. The logical methods are user and password, use of smart cards, cryptography i.e. data encryption etc. Following are some security methods: Firewall technology: It is used for isolation of network of an organisation from other networks, by a combination of hardware and software. It uses proxy servers and packet filtering software tools, routers etc. IDS: An Intrusion detection system (IDS) is software and/or hardware designed to detect unwanted attempts at accessing, manipulating, and/or disabling of computer systems, mainly through a network, such as the Internet. These attempts may take the form of attacks, as examples, by crackers, malware and/or disgruntled employees. An IDS cannot directly detect attacks within properly encrypted traffic. Proxy Server: Proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as a go-between for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. A proxy server has two purposes: (1)To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security).(2) To speed up access to a resource (via caching). It is commonly used to cache web pages from a web server. Patch Management: The patch management process, introduces a high degree of accountability and discipline to the task of discovering, analyzing, and correcting security weaknesses of Operating System. The vendors of Operating systems, periodically releases the updates for operating system or the browser, which can be applied as a patch to the existing operating system or Browser. Encryption: The process, which, with the use of mathematical algorithms, transforms a message into an incomprehensible data, is called encryption. It is used to protect data in transit over the networks from unauthorized interception and manipulation. It can also be used to verify authenticity of a transaction or document. Decryption: It is the reverse of encryption. It brings the data into its normal form, where it can be used. Digital signatures: It is electronic signatures of a person in relation to a record in electronic form. It generated by transformation of the electronic records using cryptography and a hash function. It can ensure authentication, integrity, non-repudiation etc. . Public-Key Infrastructure: The infrastructure that supports the implementation and operation of certificate based key cryptographic system is called PKI. It uses pairs of asymmetric keys that comprise a private key and a public key. MISC TERMS IN COMPUTERSDigital Certificate (DC): A DC essentially consists of public key certification information, with information of the user such as name and ID . Hacking: Hacking means knowingly or intentionally concealing, destroying or altering or causing another, to destroy or alter any computer code used for a computer programme or computer system or computer network. Hacking has been made an offence as per the Information Technology Act 2000 and one will have to pay a fine upto Rs 2 lacs or undergo imprisonment upto 3 years for hacking. IT Act 2000: Electronic commerce (eCom), online transactions and digital signatures are legally valid in India wef 18/10/2000 as a result of Govt's notifying the rules under IT Act 2000. The act has legalized the electronic contracts to make them legally enforceable. The law also provided that keeping of electronic records will be tantamount of keeping of physical records for the purpose of compliance of any law. The act also provides for penalties to a person who accesses the computer without the permission of owner, copies or extracts any data, introduces computer virus, causes disruption to any
