ANNUAL REPORT 2019

FAITHFUL

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Cornerstone Families and Friends,

Year after year – in fact, for 30 years now – the mission of Cornerstone Christian Academy is advanced by the faithful support of parents, teachers, staff, volunteers, trustees, and donors from all across the country. This Annual Report recognizes and celebrates the faithfulness and generosity of our many partners. Words fail to express how grateful I am for those who generously share their energy, expertise, faith, love, wealth, and wisdom to help inspire hope in the hearts, minds, and spirits of the children we serve.

Because of the faithfulness of our many partners, in 2018 we continued on a path towards a stronger academic program that inspires a Christian world view in students’ minds and hearts, as well as being research-based and forward-thinking in preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s uncertain future. We partnered with AIM Academy to provide literacy coaching for our K-5 teachers to equip them with skills in evidence-based literacy instruction. We launched a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum for our K-5 students and Responsive Classroom Advisory for our middle school students to facilitate the teaching of skills for communication, collaboration, empathy, emotion-management, problem-solving, and relationship building. Our new K-1 Academy for kindergarten and 1st grade students, with 3 new teachers, is preparing our youngest learners for academic success better than ever before. And, with new iMac computers in our computer lab, a new coding program in our computer curriculum, and new tools and materials in our Maker Space, our students are becoming technologically proficient as well as challenged to be innovative and critical thinkers.

With a core commitment to be a place of hope for underserved children, Cornerstone is staying on the cutting-edge of educational programming that assesses and addresses the unique abilities, learning styles, and social emotional needs of each child we serve. By aligning best teaching practices and curriculum content within a Christian environment, we are preparing our students with the faith, skills, imagination and compassion they need to make a difference in the world for the glory of God.

Thank you to our parents, teachers, staff, volunteers, trustees, and donors for your faithful support of Cornerstone. Thank you for your investment in our students, the loyalty expressed by your generous contributions, and the zeal that we all clearly share for this remarkable school.

Gratefully,

Dick Ollinger, President/CEO rollinger@ cornerstonephiladelphia.com 215 724 6858 x232

Celebrating Faithful Teachers: Ms. Grant, Mrs. Lee, and Mrs. Harper

In this our 30th anniversary year, Cornerstone celebrates and recognizes the longtime loyal service of Constance Harper, Deborah Lee, and Natasha Grant. For more than two decades Connie, Deb, and ‘Tasha have served students at Cornerstone with compassion, dedication, energy and enthusiasm.

Connie was a parent volunteer when the school began in 1988. She was then hired in 1989 as the music and art teacher. Through the years she assumed a variety of roles, including her position today as School Chaplain and Parent

Liaison Assistant, but perhaps most dear to her is her leadership of the student choirs that she still provides today.

Deborah began her tenure at Cornerstone in 1996 as a 3rd grade girls’ teacher, then as a 4th grade teacher. In 2007 she was appointed Elementary School Principal and Reading Specialist. In 2008 she became School Principal, continuing in that position still today.

Natasha was hired as the Middle School Science and Math teacher in 1998, as well as serving as the 7th grade

homeroom teacher. She then became the Science and Social Studies teacher and has faithfully continued in that position to this day. In addition, Natasha serves as the 8th grade homeroom teacher, working closely with students and parents in the high school admission process.

The Cornerstone community honors the faithful service of these three longtime educators. Thousands of young lives have been influenced and inspired by their Christian faith, character, knowledge and wisdom.

CORNERSTONE REPORTS

CornerstonePhiladelphia.com

My first exposure to Cornerstone was when the school choir visited my church—St. Johns Presbyterian in Devon —about 6 years ago. I was so immediately taken by the children’s talents and composure performing in front of a new audience that I began to donate to CCA.

Following a few donations I was told that I had given enough to be considered a Teammate, which meant being assigned a student to meet with twice a year while my donations would go directly toward their tuition. Soon after, I enlisted my wife Carla to join me and we are now in our fourth year as Teammates.

Seeing these children mature and grow has been wonderful. My faith teaches me that we are all God’s children, while some of us are afforded more opportunity than others. I believe that if we can help some of the children in Philadelphia achieve a better education through Cornerstone, then I am fulfilling God’s plan.

Parenting Faithfully: Dominique Pratt

Former Cornerstone student, Dominique Pratt has now been a faithful Cornerstone parent for nine years, with her second daughter Sanai currently in 2nd grade. Her older daughter, Cianni, graduated in 2018 and is currently a dance major at The High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA).

“I love and honor the fact that every Wednesday is Chapel , giving children the time to honor God and acknowledging that we are a Christian school.”

Highest Form of Love: A Faithful Donor Story

Longtime donors Wally and Dot French share a love story that led to a 25-year philanthropic legacy with Cornerstone Christian Academy.

Philanthropy was always part of their lives but became more so during their marriage and following the birth of their three children. Wally and Dot co-founded Regulatory Research Associates, Inc. (RRA) in Jersey City in 1982.

“People ask ‘how can you?’ We say, ‘how can you not?’”

Wally recalls he and Dot attending speaking engagements where Tony Campolo gave enthusiastic sermons about the importance of charity and specifically noted Cornerstone and UrbanPromise. When they learned more about Cornerstone, with in-person visits to the school, they were moved to support it financially and have continued with generous support of the school’s mission for over 25 years. In addition, they have served as Teammates for several Cornerstone students. In fact, Dot was a Teammate before the program

even began, volunteering to sponsor and provide guidance to several students in the school’s earlier years.

Wally and Dot’s benevolent work and philanthropic efforts grew stronger through the years, extending to other organizations including Family Promise and Habitat for Humanity (where they participated in ten Jimmy Carter work projects).

After 58 years together, Dot was called to heaven in 2018. Her life was an inspiration for all who knew her. She modeled Christ’s love and call to service, humbly caring for the needs of others. Her example of service was evident in so many ways, including the traditional Thanksgiving holiday dinner she hosted each year for 20-25 extended family members. Although a great loss to Wally, he has never lost faith in God or the commitment he and Dot shared to help others.

When asked how could he spend his life giving to so many other people, Wally sums it up by saying: “People often ask ‘how can you?’ and we said, ‘how can you not?’”

Student Art Spotlight:

7th Grade Portraits

Led by our Artist-in-Residence, Julie Kring, Cornerstone’s 7th grade students recently produced self-portraits based upon the artistic style of Kehinde Wiley. Wiley, a contemporary African-American artist uses intricate backgrounds for his subjects. Using a colorful grid method, students designed a symbol similar to the Adinkra symbols of the Asante people from Ghana West Africa. Each student created a symbol that represented a value important to them. Then using a linocut printmaking technique, students imbedded their self-portraits over the personal patterned symbols.

The Art of Black History

As part of Cornerstone’s Black History Month celebrations, Mr. Loperbey’s 5th graders created linocut illustrations inspired by the James Weldon Johnson poem Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Written in 1900 to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, the poem has served as a reminder of the painful past of African Americans and as a call for faith, perseverance, and courage for the future.

Celebrating 30 Years of Service

We are having two celebration events to commemorate Cornerstone’s 30 years of service to children and families in southwest Philadelphia. We invite you to join us at both.

There will be an All-School Celebration on the evening of Friday, April 26th at The Common Place for students, families, and community friends. The evening will include a school history museum with students presenting brief Cornerstone historical tidbits, performances by the school choirs and dance groups, messages from school leaders, and good food and fellowship.

Then, on Thursday, May 2nd there will be a 30th Anniversary Celebration at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, PA. This special dinner event will feature students and alumni, honoree award presentations, a keynote message from Dr. Bruce Main (founder of Urban Promise in Camden and former Cornerstone leader), and the casting of an “Inspire Hope” vision by Richard Ollinger, Cornerstone President/CEO.

Inspiring Educators with Technology

Anup Somalwar, Cornerstone’s technology Integration Specialist, will be speaking in June at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference, one of the world’s largest educational technology conferences. Mr. Somalwar will demonstrate the ways Cornerstone’s innovative technology practices are fostering students’ ability to think

creatively and critically, build math and science skills, and connect their learning to the real world.

As Cornerstone’s Integration Specialist, Mr. Somalwar oversees our Maker Space and Genius Hour programs, helping teachers infuse technology into their curriculum. He has developed innovative programs that are helping our students and teachers engage in creative authentic learning experiences that leverage technology.

With a degree in Math from Temple University and a Masters in Teacher Leadership from Villanova University, Mr. Somalwar spearheads Cornerstone’s commitment to ensure all students have access to the technology and connectivity necessary for learning in today’s world.

It’s Safe2Say Something at Cornerstone

Cornerstone has launched the state mandated “Safe2Say Something” (S2SS) anonymous reporting system. The program allows students and adults to submit anonymous tips related to individuals who may be at risk of hurting

themselves or others. The S2SS program originated under the Sandy Hook Promise, a national non-profit violence prevention organization, and is now mandated under PA state law.

Coming Soon: The K1 Academy Library

As a way to honor the faithful volunteer service and support of Carol Haldy, a thoughtful donor has made a gift to establish the Carol Haldy K1 Library and Resource Center for our youngest readers in kindergarten and 1st grade.

The newly assembled classroom library will contain books and other literacy resources to help place Cornerstone’s most vulnerable learners on a positive path to literary success.

Launched this school year, Cornerstone’s K1 Academy provides a safe, nurturing and stimulating learning environment that promotes social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth for students.

If you would like to make a contribution for the Carol Hadly K1 Library and Resource Center, please contact Monifa Moore, Director of Advancement, at (215) 724-6858 ext. 234 or e-mail [email protected].

CHOP and CCA: Proud to be Philly’s First HeartSafe School!

Thanks to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Cornerstone Christian Academy has become the first designated Heart Safe School in Philadelphia!

Youth Heart Watch strives to create Heart Safe communities by assisting schools in establishing a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP) to place into action in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Now that Cornerstone has taken the steps necessary to safeguard the health of students, school staff, and community members, our school is officially designated a Youth Heart Watch “Heart Safe School” complete with certificate and Youth Heart Watch Heart Safe School Banner.

To commemorate this accomplishment, Cornerstone held the 2nd Annual Sudden Cardiac Arrest Drill on Wednesday, March 20 and run by Zane Schultz, Youth Heart Watch Coordinator, from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Why Give? Cornerstone Fundraising Overview

Every dollar donated to Cornerstone ensures that our students will receive a quality education that truly transforms their life. Your generous gifts make a difference for the students and the families who continue to choose our school for their Christian education.

Nearly 25 percent of our donor base has been contributing financial support to Cornerstone since 1990. We are

underway in our 30th anniversary year as an independent Christian school, and we celebrate those who have helped to inspire hope in children in southwest Philadelphia.

We have even more to celebrate! In a city where approximately 65 percent of public high school students graduate from high school in four years, 98 percent of Cornerstone alumni graduate high

school on time. Our children understand that there is a person in the Cornerstone family who cares about them, even if far away. YOU make a Christian education possible for our students who go on to receive high school acceptance letters to some of the region’s best schools. Through the years, I hope we have adequately communicated to you our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your generosity.

Volunteer OpportunitiesLast year, over 110 individuals provided 1,389 hours of volunteer service at Cornerstone in the areas of student support, facilities improvements, classroom activities, and office support. Volunteers are vital to Cornerstone by the support they provide for school operations without financial cost.

Consider becoming a volunteer by serving in one or more of these ways:

Mentor - build a relationship with a middle school student by helping them set and achieve personal and academic goals, including preparing for high school.

Classroom Assistant – support teachers by assisting with classroom activities and lessons.

Maintenance – help keep our buildings and grounds safe, clean, and in good repair.

Office Support – assist with mailings, materials preparation, and other light office duties.

Committees – serve on a board committee (Advancement, Education, Facilities, or Finance)

Tutoring – provide reading and/or math support to students.

There are year-round volunteer opportunities at Cornerstone. For more information please contact Maria Arrington by email at [email protected] or by phone at 215-724-6858, ext.233.
