On Monday, approximately 35 child- ren, accompanied by Directors John Hager and 'Betty Anderson, made a complete tour of Africa, USA, as guests of the manage- ment. Boys and girls from 6 to 16 were excited by animals and plants native to the "Dark Conti- nent". Prom the safari, which "Rinded through herds of animals roaming at will, to the boat ride down simulated tropical rivers, to a geyser spouting 100 feet or more through the air, there were many thrills and chills experi- enced by each individual. Tuesday, several mothers and friends provided transportation for 79 children to James Melton's Autorama. Beginning with the cyclorama of America the ^-^pautiful, continuing with a guided tour past the antecedents of the modern automobile, climax- ed by a ride on what is probably the world's oldest bus, the en- tire group was treated as royal guests by Mr. Holloway and his entire staff. On Wednesday, more parents friends provided transporta- tion and assisted Directors John Hager and Eetty Anderson in a afternoon at Storyland in _x>mpano Beach. The 74 children present relived their favorite nursery rhymes as simulated by Storyland, enjoyed their favorite fides and refreshments and mingled with clowns of fairyland. For the above entertainment, the Summer Recreation Program is equally Indebted to the manage- ments, the parents who provided transportation and assistance in trnaperoning the children, and the city fathers who financed the ex- peditions. Thursday, some 65 children enjoyed games, prizes, and re- freshments at the Annual Field Day of the Summer Recreation! Program held at the Boca : Raton School. Prizes and dofiStiofis were provided by Aifar Creamery, Kwik-Chek Stores, .Western. Auto Store, Dale's Pet and Garden Supply, Boca Raton Pharmacy, Clifford St. John, Boca Raton 5 & 10 Variety Store, and Dave's Grocery. Dorothy Parker and Dick Pool reigned as queen and king for the day. Last Thursday the Summer Recreation Program ended with a picnic and swimming at the Boca Raton beach pavilion. During the summer there were approximately 150 children be- tween the ages of 6 and 16 regis- tered in the Summer Recreation Program. The program averaged better than 60 children spending approximately six hours per day, in activities ranging from picnics and pet shows to educational tours and Red Cross swimming instruction. Individual people to whom the program is indebted are far too numerous to mention in this space, but the directors specifically want to emphasize the importance of such co-opera- tion to the success of this type program. Aside from the parents and friends the program is made possible through the joint co- operation of the Palm Beach Board of Public Instruction and the Town of Boca Raton. Direc- tors John Hager and Betty An- derson wish to take this means of conveying their thanks and appreciation for the above assis- tance and to hope that each par- ticipant e njoyed the Summer Recreation Program. classrooms for next year. Thebuildings will cost $4,800 peryear, but will provide six newclassrooms, a library and aclinic, and will make unneces-sary the building of four newportable classrooms, planned forBoca Raton this year.

The rental units may also re-lease two portable classrooms al-ready on the Boca Raton site, andWatkins mentioned the possibilityof moving these units to Carver,in Delray Beach, in order to avoiddouble sessions there next fall. After discussion, however, it wasagreed that it might be better tcleave them in their present loca-tion until after the start ofschool.

"They might need them rightthere," said Watkins. "Boca Ra-ton is growing so fast there is notelling what will happen downthere."

Watkins also reported that fold-ing tables, to be placed in thegymnasium at the Boca RatonSchool, will solve the shortageof cafeteria space for the pres-ent time.

Eleven persons were present,in addition to the School Board, for the public hearing on theschool budget for next year, butonly two questions were askedand no objections raised.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS-Newfound Gap, the half-way stop inthe drive across this beautiful national park, is a crowded placethese days.

Cars from throughout the eastern states fill the parking area andfar down the mountain side as their occupants get out to exclaimover the breathtaking beauty of the view. On a clear day they cansee great peaks 75 miles away rising out of the smoky haze that al-ways hangs over the mountains in this southernmost end of theAppalachian chain.

Traffic is much heavier in the Smokies this summer than ever be-»fore. Ascending'to the-Gap, there is a steady stream of automobiles 'coming down the mountain and it is almost impossible to go morethan 30 miles an hour upward, because of the long line of carsahead.

But who would want to go any faster? This is a deep forest ofgiant trees that rise up out of mountainous terrain, cut through bythe Oconaluftee and Little Pigeon Rivers as well as hundreds oflittle streams, all flowing down over rocky beds.

Fishermen try their luck in the clear, sparkling streams and atalmost every side road parking area (and they are numerous), pic-nickers stop'for lunch or supper. Some hardy souls even camp outovernight.

If they have any fear of a hungry bear paying them a visit in the # *night, they show no signs of it, although within a half mile, a bearmay be already raiding the trash cans holding the refuse of earlierpicnickers.

And no matter how often people are warned and how many signsare posted, they continue to treat the bears as if they were in thepark especially for their benefit to photograph and admire. Lastyear, only about 16 persons were injured by the innocent lookingbruins, and it is a wonder that the number was so small.

Every time traffic jams up or stops ahead, one knows that it isbecause a bear is out on the highway and he is being photographedand watched by as many as 50 or 75 people.

Travelers, who fail to cross the park, do not know what they aremissing. The panoramic views, the long drives through shadedroadway around sharp cliffs and the cool mountain air are highly re-freshing, especially to those coming from flat country.

For those who are timid about mountain driving, it may be com-forting to know that the highways are wide and well marked.'.
