MOTTO

The process of acquiring wisdom alongwith knowledge is the most important component of

educationwhen the individual develops human values defined by our

ancients in three simple andbeautiful words - Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram - Truth, Love

and Beauty. Each is equated to God.

The fundamental aim of education is to provide students with a purpose in life. Education is initiation into the life of the Spirit, a training of human souls in the pursuit of truth and

practice of virtue.

Building complex

• The CEPT campus is located over 6 acres of land in Navrangpura area of the historic city of Ahmedabad.

• The school of architecture forms a part of the building complex formed by other buildings of the school of planning, the visual arts centre, the institute of interior design, art centre and community science centre.

• The planning of the building blocks has been done so as to distribute spaces amongst intensive landscape.

• The school of architecture was first built in 1962 with adequate facilities of expansion.

Page 7: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

The CEPT has four schools functioning under it, viz :

• School of Planning• School of Architecture• School of Building Science &

Technology• School of Interior Design

Page 8: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

Ideologies on which the institute has been designed

• There has to be a feeling of no restriction to the exchange of ideas and thoughts through an informal environment.

• A thrust has to be given on the provision of flexible spaces which can be used in a multifunctional manner.

• A strong interconnectivity amongst spaces is required, making the school an ‘open space with hardly any doors’.

• A proper working environment has been created which facilitates faculty and students to teach, learn and interact anywhere.

• Local materials have been used, essentially to reduce the installation and maintenance costs.

Page 9: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

CEPT, Ahmedabad is a good example of blend of nature with the built-up.There is a strong connectivity between the building blocks. The building essentially ‘merges with the surroundings’ to provide a unique ambience.

Page 10: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

A stepped section of the building helps in a smooth and effective airflow in the hot climate of Ahmedabad. The contours make the site very level oriented and one can see the

utilization of landform in the design.

Recessed windows provide protection from the hot sun, while angled windows assure that maximum light reaches the interiors.

• The faculty rooms are placed too far from the studios. This can be of advantage as well as disadvantage of the faculty and the students.

• Similarly, an interconnection between the library and the studios cannot be easily made out. The library is located far away from the studios and is not easily accessible.

• The openings provide glare-free sunlight.• There is a major emphasis on arts and culture, as

the paintings, murals and sculptures have been placed strategically around the campus.

• Considering the professional nature of the disciplines dealing with built form, a number of experts from the Industry/Profession, regularly teach at CEPT as visiting faculty.

• It’s hardly visible from the road due to the large setback and dense trees planted along the boundary.

• From the inside, no direct outside views can be seen as the windows have been placed at a height.

School of Planning and Architecture, School of Planning and Architecture, DelhiDelhi

• School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Delhi is one of the leading architecture institutes in India. The institute came into existence in 1942 as a part of the Delhi Polytechnic at Kashmere Gate. Today, School of Planning and Architecture is an autonomous institute and has been accorded the status of Deemed University.

Page 43: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

• School of Planning and Architecture had a modest beginning in 1941 as the Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic. It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi and then integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for training in Rural, Urban and Regional Planning.

• The School was subsequently renamed as School of Planning and Architecture, and was affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1959. This new status enabled the School to broaden its horizon by introducing new academic extension programmes, promote research and award its own undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral degrees. The location of the School in New Delhi, the national capital, offers opportunities for participation in the city's rich cultural life and for interaction with various national as well as international institutions, attracting students from all over India and from other developing countries.

Page 44: CCA, SPA & CEPT case studies

• The current campus is housed near ITO in Indraprastha Estate in New Delhi. The SPA residential Campus is located in New Friends Colony. A site of 20 acres (81,000 m2) has recently been acquired south of JNU for developing a new campus.

• The School has always been in the lead for extending education and research to new frontiers of knowledge. Human habitat and environment being the basic concern of the School, the spectrum of academic programmes is being continuously extended by providing programmes in new fields and emerging areas for which facilities are not available, as yet, anywhere else in the country.
