An allergyAn allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system. Allergic reactions occur when a person's immune system reacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. A substance that causes a reaction is called an allergen. These reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is formally called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. Allergic reactions are distinctive because of excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). This reaction results in an inflammatory response which can range from uncomfortable to dangerous.Mild allergies like hay fever are very common in the human population and cause symptoms such as red eyes, itchiness, and runny nose, eczema, hives, or an asthma attack. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening reactions called anaphylaxis. Food allergies and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees are often associated with these severe reactions.A variety of tests exist to diagnose allergic

conditions. If done they should be ordered and interpreted in light of a person's history of exposure as many positive test results do not mean a clinically significant allergy. Tests include placing possible allergens on the skin and looking for a reaction such as swelling and blood tests to look for an allergen-specific IgE.Treatments for allergies include avoiding known allergens, steroids that modify the immune system in general, and medications such as antihistamines and decongestants which reduce symptoms. Many of these medications are taken by mouth, although epinephrine, which is used to treat anaphylactic reactions, is injected. Immunotherapy uses injected allergens to desensitize the body's response. Many allergens such as dust or pollen are airborne particles. In these cases, symptoms arise in areas in contact with air, such as eyes, nose, and lungs. For instance, allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, causes irritation of the nose, sneezing, itching, and redness of the eyes. Inhaled allergens can also lead to asthmatic symptoms, caused by narrowing of the airways (bronchoconstr ict ion) and increased production of mucus in the lungs, shortness of breath (dyspnea), coughing and wheezing.

CauseRisk factors for allergy can be placed in two general categories, namely host and environmental factors. Host factors include heredity, gender, race, and age, with heredity being by far the most significant. However, there have been recent increases in the incidence of allergic disorders that cannot be explained by g e n e t i c f a c t o r s a l o n e . F o u r m a j o r environmental candidates are alterations in exposure to infectious diseases during early childhood, environmental pollution, allergen levels, and dietary changes. If you or your family member have allergy symptoms, an allergist / immunologist, often referred to as an allergist, can help with a diagnosis. An allergist has advanced training and experience to properly diagnose your condition and prescribe an allergy treatment and management plan to help you feel better and live better.

Performance Appraisal: A roadmap for employee developement

-Preeti SinghPGDM- Fourth Term, CIIM

Mr. Manish SoniHOD-Department of Pathology,

Career College

The performance appraisal plays a vital role within the organization. It is a systematic evaluation of the job performance of an employee to understand the abilities for further growth and development. Performance appraisals is a part of career development & consist of regular review of employee performance within the organization. A key reason for the utilization of performance appraisal is performance improvement initially at the level of individual employees and ultimately at the level of the organization. Other fundamental reasons include “as a basis for employment decisions (e.g. promotions, terminations, transfers), as criteria in research (e.g. test validation), to aid with communication (e.g. allowing employees to know how they are doing and organizational expectations), to establish personal objectives for training” programs, for transmission of objective feedback for personal development, “as a means of documentation to aid in keeping track of decisions and legal requirements” and in wage and salary administration. Additionally, it can aid in the formulation of job criteria and selection of individuals “who are best suited to perform the required organizational tasks”. A performance appraisal can be part of guiding and monitoring employee career development. PAs can also be used to aid in work motivation through the use of reward systems.ObjectivesThe main objective of performance appraisals is to assess and improve the performance of employees and to increase their potential and value. Other objectives include providing feedback, improving communicat ion, understanding training needs, clarifying roles and responsibilities and deciding how to

allocate rewards.Ÿ Providing Feedback: Providing feedback is the

most common justification for an organization to deliver a performance appraisal system. Through its performance appraisal process the individual finds out exactly how well he/she performed during the previous twelve months and can then use that information to improve his/her performance in the future.

Ÿ Facilitating Promotion Decisions: Almost everyone in an organization wants to gain. How should the company decide who gets the brass rings? Performance appraisal makes it easier for the organization to make good decisions about making sure that the most important positions are filled by the most capable individuals.

Ÿ Facilitating Layoff or Downsizing Decisions: If promotions are what everybody wants, layoffs are what everybody wishes to avoid. But when economic realities force an organization to downsize, performance appraisal helps make sure that the most talented individuals are retained and to identify poor performers who affects the productivity of the organization.

Ÿ Encouraging Performance Improvement: How can anyone improve if he doesn't know how he's doing right now? A good performance appraisal points out areas where people need to improve their performance.

Ÿ Motivating Superior Performance: This is another classic reason for delivering a performance appraisal system. Performance appraisal helps motivate people to deliver superior performance in several ways. First, the appraisal process helps them learn just what it is that the system considers to be ''superior.'' Second, since most people want

to be regarded as superior performers, a performance assessment process provides them with a means to demonstrate that. Finally, performance appraisal encourages employees to avoid being stigmatized as inferior performers (or, much worse, as merely ''average'').

Ÿ Setting and Measuring Goals: Goal setting has consistently been demonstrated as a management process that generates superior performance. The performance appraisal process is commonly used to make sure that every member of the organization sets and achieves effective goals.

Performance appraisal is a means of validating both internal (promotions and transfers) and external (hiring new employees from outside) sources. Organizations spend a lot of time and money for recruiting and selecting employees. A proper performance appraisal finds out the validity of the various selection tools and so the company can follow suitable steps for selecting employees in the future. And by performance appraisal we can improvise the performance of the current employees.PA is reliable if it provides consistent data regardless of who conducts it. Such a system has a high degree of inter-rater reliability-that is, a strong likelihood that two separate raters appraising the same employee will give identical or nearly identical scores.

Business EcosystemA business ecosystem describes the structure and behaviour of a network of high-tech organisations that share a key technological platform and the ways individual firms can flourish in such an environment.Dr. James F. Moore was a Senior Fellow at Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society where he founded the Open Economies Project. He studied change in large scale social, economic, and technical systems and is the pioneer and originator of biological metaphors of organisation behaviour such as “business ecosystems”, “Internet ecosystems” and the ecological approach to alliances and alliance-based competition. His research is primarily based on case studies in the high technology sector where the PC and Internet technologies favoured network based competition. Moore's Harvard Business Review article "Predators and Prey: A New Ecology of Competition" won a McKinsey Award for best Harvard Business Review article in 1993.The essence of a business ecosystem is that networks between companies need to be analysed from a higher conceptual level rather than from the viewpoint of individual organisations. A business ecosystem's scope is the set of positive sum relationships (symbiosis) between actors who work together around a core technology platform. Irrespective of an organisation's individual strength, all actors in a business ecosystem are connected and share the success or failure of the network as a whole.Aspects of ecosystem are actors (species), relations between actors (network), performance (health), dynamics (evolution), strategies and behaviour of actors (roles). A business ecosystem has seven types of actors which are customers, markets, products, processes, organizations, stakeholders and government / society. The health (performance) of an ecosystem is defined by the following four factors:value (niche creation), critical mass (robustness), continuous performance improvement (productivity), co-evolution or the joint learning and optimization effects.Source:http://www.provenmodels.com

Diffusion of InnovationEverett M. Rogers is widely known as the inventor of the “Diffusion of Innovation” theory from his research on how farmers adopt agricultural innovations. Rogers reviewed the existing studies on diffusion of innovations from educational, medical and marketing domains and found considerable similarities among these different disciplines. His book, Diffusion of Innovations (1962), gave him academic fame and still remains the second most cited book title in social sciences today. Diffusion is defined as the communication process by which a new idea or new product is accepted by the market, while the rate of diffusion is defined as the speed that the new idea spreads from one consumer to the next. Adoption, similar to diffusion, also deals with the psychological decision making processes of the individual, rather than those of an aggregate market. Rogers showed that a diffusion process in a social system follows an S-Curve in which the adoption of a technology begins with slow change, is followed by rapid change and ends in slow change as the product matures or new technologies emerge. He also held that people adopt new technological innovations at different times and at different rates. He then used the varying rates of adoption to distinguish different phases in the diffusion process allowing practitioners to assess such things as the life of a new product or service and the application of the correct set of marketing activities at the appropriate time. The adoption process tracked through the diffusion curve is a decision-making process in which an individual passes from the initial knowledge of an innovation to forming an attitude toward the innovation, to a decision to adopt or reject it, then to its implementation and the use of the new idea, and finally to confirmation of this decision.
