Trustee Chair Dr. Cornelius J. Milliken ’75

Spring is a time of reflection – a time to celebrate student achievement and success, and an opportunity to applaud our community’s commitment to our students. The images and stories shared in this year’s Community Report illustrate just some of the ways you help CCC realize its mission to transform lives through learning. Each gift directly benefits our students, and as I reflect on those opportunities made possible by your gifts, I am humbled anew by your loyalty, your caring, and your personal generosity.

Thank you from Corning Community College’s Leadership

This College has a long history of educating students to help them create a life filled with promise and purpose. Access to all is fundamental to our mission, and we rely on public funding to assure that. However, in today’s world, private philanthropy is critical if the College is to continue to offer a truly transformative learning experience. As I have watched this synergy develop, I’ve come to profoundly appreciate how deeply committed our community members are to CCC. I am honored to be a member of that giving community.

While this report cannot feature every student impacted nor every donor who’s made a gift, it can illustrate how a giving community can make a difference. It gives me great pleasure to share some of the ways your gifts have enriched our students’ lives, as well as some of the inspiring reasons why people give to support the College. Please see for yourself what a difference your gifts have made. Each and every gift matters … and because I know I can never say these two simple words too many times: “Thank You!”

Foundation President Arie J. van den Blink CCC President Dr. Katherine P. Douglas

Thank you to the many alumni and friends who make annual gifts to benefit students and faculty at Corning Community College. The Community Report recognizes those who made annual gifts of $100 or more between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014. For a complete list of donors, please visit CCCDF.org.

Your Gifts at WorkYour gifts provide

professional development,

student scholarships, athletics, visiting speakers, student

activities, and more

Your gifts support new learning projects, academic initiatives, and student living and learning opportunities. More than 80%

of our students rely on a variety of financial assistance and scholarship support – many of those scholarships funded

with private gifts. CCC’s athletic program relies on gifts to ensure a robust, championship program that develops leadership skills in our student-athletes. Our faculty use private gifts to fund innovative teaching initiatives, enhance their professional development, and further challenge their students. Student Life taps gifts to ensure that learning happens 24/7 at CCC, including in Perry Hall. Please enjoy the following illustrative examples of learning opportunities made possible because of your gifts.

More than 80% of our students receive some form of financial aid, including scholarships. Our donors are our faculty, alumni, community supporters, and most recently one of our most notable local private philanthropists and his family. This fall, the Foundation will award the inaugural Amory Houghton, Jr. Scholarship. This scholarship was created by Amory’s children to honor their father, and to help a local student – a student who might not otherwise have access to a college education – attend CCC and fully fund that student’s education.

New Possibilities for AllAmong the many truisms often cited, one in particular applies to Tracy Nist and her daughter Lyric Boothe: there are multiple “right” ways to reach the end goal.

Tracy and Lyric are graduates of Corning Community College’s Class of 2015. In

addition to choosing very different paths to graduation, they chose CCC for very different reasons. Although Lyric was ready to enroll at Temple University, after graduating from Southside High School, she picked CCC because she couldn’t pass up

the opportunity to complete two years toward a bachelor’s degree tuition-free, as a Presidential Scholar.

Before Tracy said yes to CCC, she did some soul-searching. For 20 years, her life revolved around her children, and professionally she was already doing well. Earning a degree, though, was a personal goal.

Today, with their CCC degrees in hand,

the future is bright for both Tracy and Lyric. This fall, Lyric will enroll at Temple University far ahead of her peers, starting her junior year with no student debt and a deep understanding of her professional goals. Tracy graduated with honors,

a newfound passion for writing and history, and renewed vigor for her

future.

A Smart StartPresidential Scholar Nicholas Curreri wasn’t expecting any surprises

when he enrolled at CCC. His mom, Debra, is an alumna and studied business administration, the same subject area Nick was considering. So, Nick knew the professors were good … he knew CCC was a remarkable value, especially with the Presidential Scholars Award he had earned … and he was confident he’d get the same first-hand encouragement and academic support Debra had experienced.

“My personal expectations were more than met by the personal attention I got from my professors,” said Nick, an alumnus of Corning-Painted Post West High School. “Plus there were surprises … my faculty adviser helped create a career-defining internship with World Kitchen, and my professors shared a long

list of important life lessons.”

Nick graduated in 2015 and will spend his next two years at SUNY Geneseo

continuing to study business.

Tori Woodard found a variety of life-transforming opportunities at CCC, including an internship with the Disney College Program. Tori, a standout student at Thomas Edison High School, graduated in the top ten percent of her class in 2013, which entitled her to a Presidential Scholars Award. Tori smartly accepted the award, and after completing two terms at CCC, she spent a third term in Orlando as a Disney intern, returning to Corning in May 2015 to graduate with honors.

“Of course the scholarship money was important to me,” said Tori, “but having my hard work and academic standing recognized meant a lot to me too. CCC’s talented professors challenged me, they mentored and advised me, and they encouraged me to springboard to Disney where doors were opened that will set the stage for my career and my life.”

With your support, CCC is able to present events that range from panel discussions to cultural experiences. One of this year’s highlights was Year of Water, which illustrated the importance of water to every aspect of our lives. The series of events was launched with a kayaking trip down the Chemung River and

included other activities like Sacred Water, featuring original music and poetry.

Successful athletes, like CCC’s award-winning softball players, are dedicated, conscientious, and committed to continuous improvement. These life-skills will also serve them well in their careers. Annual giving support, as well as proceeds from the Foundation’s annual Red Barons Classic Golf Tournament, support needs across the athletic program – from travel to championship competition, to pride-building apparel and equipment, to eagerly anticipated and much improved athletic facilities and fields – your contributions make this all possible.

Visiting speakers challenged us to think differently about ourselves and our world. Dr. Arun Gandhi,

founder of the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute, and grandson of Mohandas

“Mahatma” Gandhi, discussed his views on justice and the opportunity to transform our opponents through love and suffering. Drs. Timothy Snyder and Philip Bobbitt, from Yale and Columbia Universities, respectively, offered thought-provoking viewpoints on current events and world issues. These visiting speakers were made possible through annual gifts, and our Visiting Scholar Series, a donor-funded lecture program, is largely underwritten by Professor Emeritus Walter R. Smith. Events such as these are open to the public, and all community members are encouraged to join the discussion and discovery.

Thank You!Capital Campaign Goal Realized, Maximizing Student-Learning Opportunities

Thanks to the generosity of donors and the leadership of Corning Incorporated Foundation, the Campaign for Corning Community College reached its milestone $3 million goal.

All told, this support provided critical resources to re-imagine the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library, rejuvenate the Commons, modernize the athletic complex, and redesign services to drive student success.

Students now have access to a technology-rich, 21st century library that is home to the Learning Commons, where students interact with tutors, professors, librarians, and each other, forming relationships that result in deeper and more authentic learning.

The transformation of our library is a milestone in our college’s history, and it was made possible by a new generation of friends, benefactors, and counselors who demonstrated their vision, their leadership, and their generosity by underwriting the cost of this transformation. To all those who made this transformation possible, thank you for your vision and your support.

Historic Partnership Continues ...Corning Incorporated Foundation’s challenge grant to the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Capital Campaign set the pace for one of the College’s largest fundraising initiatives in its recent history. Corning Incorporated Foundation agreed to give $2 million to re-build CCC’s library if members of the community committed contributions of an additional $1 million. Eager volunteers worked with inspired members of our local community to reach total contributions of over $3.2 million. These private donations enabled the College to leverage nearly $20 million from New York State and the USDA to fully renovate, remodel, and refresh not only the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library, but the Student Commons and Athletic facilities on Spencer Hill.

“Education is the cornerstone of a productive and engaged citizenry,” said Karen Martin ’78, President of Corning Incorporated Foundation. “Corning Incorporated Foundation Trustees recognize the tremendous and long-standing role that Corning Community College fulfills in the region, and they look forward to the growth and exciting transformations of the College as it continues to evolve in the 21st century.”

New Partners EmergeCameron Manufacturing & Design and CCC share a goal and a need for an educated citizenry, so when the opportunity to contribute to the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Capital Campaign presented itself, Cameron didn’t hesitate.

“At Cameron, we rely on each other to succeed so we seek talented people,” said Chris Goll, President of Cameron. “Nearly 10% of our employees got their start at CCC. It’s in Cameron’s best interest to make sure CCC has everything it needs to prepare highly qualified skilled employees for a variety of professions, from welding to machining to accounting.”

In addition to supporting the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Capital Campaign, Cameron contributed materials to the College’s Welding Program, which enrolled its first class in the Spring of 2015.

Hidden TreasuresTom and Barbara Blumer believe that Corning and the Finger Lakes region are treasures – treasures that must be nurtured and privately supported to ensure they’re available for generations to come. Luckily, Tom and Barbara consider the College one of those treasures. Tom has committed his time, service, and boundless energy in support of the College – he presently serves as a College Trustee; he’s immediate-past chair of the Regional Board of Trustees; and most recently, he gave tirelessly as co-chair of the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Capital Campaign. Yet together, Tom and Barbara, are also generous benefactors to the College. Aside from their unwavering service and community commitment, the Blumers have been loyal, long-term givers to the College’s

Annual Fund; they’ve established and endowed the Thomas and Barbara Blumer Scholarship in support of CCC’s Early Childhood Education Program; they’ve strengthened CCC’s future with a planned estate gift; and they’ve left their indelible personal mark on the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library. While their accomplishments and contributions are noteworthy … we’d especially like to say “thank you” for being an inspiration to so many.
