The characteristic behaviors ofautism spectrum disorder may ormay not be apparent in infancy (18to 24 months), but usually becomeobvious during early childhood (24months to 6 years).

As part of a well-baby/child visit,your childs doctor should performa developmental screening,asking specific questions about

your babys progress. The NationalInstitute of Child Health andHuman Development (NICHD) listsfive behaviors that warrant furtherevaluation:

Does not babble or coo by 12months

Does not gesture (point, wave,grasp) by 12 months

Does not say single words by 16months

Does not say two-word phraseson his or her own by 24 months

Has any loss of any language orsocial skill at any age

Any of these five red flags doesnot mean your child has autism.But because the symptoms ofthe disorder vary so much, achild showing these behaviorsshould have further evaluationsby a multidisciplinary team. Thisteam may include a neurologist,psychologist, developmental

pediatrician, speech / languagetherapist, learning consultantor many other professionalsknowledgeable about autism.

Aspergers Disorder was addedto the American PsychiatricAssociations Diagnostic andStatistical Manual of MentalDisorders (DSM-IV) in 1994 as aseparate disorder from autism.However, there are still manyprofessionals who considerAspergers Disorder a less severeform of autism. In 2013, the DSM-5 replaced autism, AspergersDisorder, and other pervasivedevelopmental disorders withthe umbrella diagnosis of autism

spectrum disorder.

What distinguishes AspergersDisorder from autism are the less

know several people who havemet him and say hes a very niceguy. Ozzie Smith is a Hall of Famebaseball player who went to CalPoly and would come back to thearea to help out his alma mater.One of the coolest professionalathletes that lived in our area wasChuck Liddell, who was an UltimateFighting Champion. I would see himwalking down Higuera Street andwould always be surprised by hisheight.

One of the worlds most well-known athletes who ever lived inour area was my mothers favorite,Jack LaLanne. As Morro Bays mostfamous resident, Jack would ofteneat at Dorns Restaurant. Thatswhere I met him for the first time,and noticed that everyone in the

restaurant loved Jack andthem. His wife was wand just as colorful as JaLaLanne was a true mohistorical figure, and the firsuperhero. When I was teMorro Elementary in the students parent that woJack had him sign an 8 x
