    Community College Initiative (CCI) Program

    Scholarship awards for the 2016-2017 Community College Initiative (CCI !rogram

    are contingent on the appropriation of "ederal funding #y the $nited States Congress%

    Program Overview

    The Community College Initiative (CCI) Program seeks to foster mutual understanding between the citizens of

    the United tates and the citizens of !artici!ating CCI countries" The CCI Program !rovides !artici!ants with a

    non#degree$ academic#year !rogram at a U"" community college designed to build !artici!ants% technical skills

    in a!!lied fields$ enhance their leadershi! ca!abilities$ and strengthen their &nglish language !roficiency" The!rogram also !rovides o!!ortunities for !rofessional internshi!s$ service learning$ and community engagement"

    The CCI Program is a !rogram of the U"" 'e!artment of tate"

    &ligible fields of study for the 1*#1+ CCI Program include agriculture$ a!!lied engineering$ business

    management and administration$ early childhood education$ information technology$ media$ !ublic safety$ and

    tourism and hos!itality management" Partici!ants may earn an academic certificate in their field of study andgain first#hand !ractical e,!erience through internshi!s" -fter com!leting the !rogram$ !artici!ants return

    home with enhanced skills and e,!ertise to hel! them contribute to the economic develo!ment of their

    countries"

    ince the !rogram%s ince!tion in +$ more than $* students from 1 countries have received scholarshi!s

    for study at community colleges throughout the United tates"

    The CCI Program demonstrates U"" commitment to increasing access to higher education for international

    students from underre!resented and underserved communities in selected countries and highlights the learning

    environment offered at U"" community colleges" The !rogram also builds U"" community colleges% efforts todee!en international education !artnershi!s and !rogramming"

    Community colleges are !redominantly !ublicly funded$ inclusive institutions in local communities thatwelcome all who desire to learn$ regardless of wealth$ heritage$ or !revious academic e,!erience" Community

    colleges offer individual courses (credit and non#credit)$ certificate !rograms$ workforce develo!ment training$

    and -ssociate degrees" There are 1$1. !ublic$ inde!endent and tribal community colleges across the United

    tates" Community colleges are sometimes referred to as technical colleges or /unior colleges"

    Fields of Study Summary

    Partici!ants will work with their Program Coordinators at each host college to develo! an individualdevelo!ment !lan in their field of study" Courses and !rograms of study vary by individual colleges"

    Partici!ants should develo! their goals broadly within these fields of study" Through the a!!lication$

    !artici!ants are asked to describe their s!ecific areas of interest$ related e,!erience$ and long#term goals"

    The CCI Program offers the following fields of study0

    &griculture-griculture students learn how to use general !rinci!les of agricultural research and !roduction to a!!roach

    !ractical agricultural !roblems" These !roblems could range from soil conservation and animal husbandry

    to !lant cultivation and business management" Potential sub/ects that students may e,!lore includeagriculture business$ animal science$ farm management$ feed and fertilizer marketing$ or sustainable

    agriculture"

    -!!lied engineering students learn theoretical and a!!lied skills in a technical field" ome !rograms are

    designed to train technicians in fundamental skills for a trade and other !rograms focus on technicalbackground$ system design$ eui!ment troubleshooting$ and technology and management issues within a

    technical field" Potential sub/ects that students may e,!lore include automotive manufacturing technology$

    construction management$ electronics$ energy management$ engineering tech$ heating ventilation and airconditioning$ manufacturing maintenance$ and welding" -!!licants for a!!lied engineering need to have a

    solid foundation in math and should antici!ate taking a math !lacement test at their host cam!us"

    *usiness ,anagement and &dministration2usiness managers ty!ically !lan$ organize$ direct$ and oversee o!erations and em!loyers" They may

    become su!ervisors in a com!any or a de!artment or territory within a com!any%s o!erations3 they may

    seek to start u! a business of their own3 or they may seek to im!rove an e,isting small#scale familyenter!rise" &,act duties vary de!ending on the ty!e of business$ the com!any$ field$ and industry" Potential

    Information 'echnology (I'IT studies focus on how information and com!uting systems su!!ort business$ research$ and

    communications needs" Instruction ranges from the basics of com!uter hardware to the com!le,

    CCI Eligibility Requirements

    &veryone who meets the CCI eligibility criteria listed below is welcome to a!!ly regardless of race$ color$

    national origin$ se,$ age$ religion$ geogra!hic location$ socio#economic status$ disability (!hysical or mental)$se,ual orientation$ or gender identity" Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to a!!ly" Com!etition

    for the CCI Program is merit#based and o!en to anyone who0

    Is a citizen$ national or !ermanent resident ualified to hold a valid !ass!ort issued by a country

    !artici!ating in the CCI Program"

    Is currently residing in the eligible country"

    Is 17 years or older by the !rogram start date"

    6as successfully earned a secondary school di!loma"
