Recent SpeakersSeptember 14th: Jeb Blackburn, Youth Leadership Tallahassee

Youth Leadership Tallahassee was the idea of Leadership Tallahassee Class 20, who wanted high school students to get dual-enrollment credit at Tallahassee Community College, and is now in its 12th year. For 2 days in the summer, students are taken out of Tallahassee and have intensive immersion in leadership and teamwork.

Out of 150-200 applicants, 35 students are selected, focusing on a diversity of leadership experience and students who can build leadership. What is a leader? Situational leadership is a focus and students are encouraged to step back and be a follower sometimes. Why is leadership important to teach? Students have to learn and trained to be leaders at work. The program takes students out of their comfort zone, but not to the

point of uncomfortability. Minimum requirements include a 2.5 unweighted GPA and must have a number of volunteer hours.

September 21st: Jim Davis, Sustainable Tallahassee“Sustainable Tallahassee promotes environmental stewardship and economic vitality in our community through education and collaboration.” It has offices at First Presbyterian Church, which is big into the environmental movement with a solar panel array on its roof and has no investments in fossil fuel companies.

Sustainable Tallahassee encourages “reduce, reuse, recycle” by promoting re-useable water bottles with the city and county, hosts a “Trash Dash” 1 mile and 5 k run in November at the cross country track at the landfill, hosts a community calendar with environmental activities in the area, hosts “Green Drinks” – a monthly gathering so folks can exchange sustainability ideas, supports a Community Carbon Fund for local energy efficiency projects along with a Carbon Calculator to calculate personal carbon footprints, encourages new neighborhoods to set aside community garden space, and works with StarMetro to get free rides to downtown and promote the use of bicycles.

Club Satellite About to Launch

The CCKC Board authorized creation of a new special member category at the September meeting, launching a Club Satellite for CCKC.

Ellen Ann is a recent CKI alum (as is her friend Michelle) and wants to join the grown up version of Kiwanis but is early in her professional life with budget and time constraints. Sam Kerce is a young CCKC member who wants to involve more Tallahassee young professionals in community service. Jessica Lowe-Minor has a toddler and full time career and wants to keep active in Kiwanis but can’t commit to weekly luncheons. Amber Tynan wants to make CCKC more interesting and dynamic. Cole Tessier works all day as a supervisor in a veterinarian hospital and rarely gets away for lunch meetings. Emma likes the idea of allowing more young adults to share the Kiwanis Service experience. I want to build on the legacy of CCKC with younger members who can help assure we remain relevant and engaged in our community on behalf of kids and the families.

The CCKC Club Satellite model is based largely on the successful program in place in Lake Mary Florida under the guidance and leadership of Florida District Kiwanis Treasurer C. Todd Smith. The term “club satellite” differentiates the membership model from a “satellite club.” Our satellite members will belong to CCKC and will enjoy most of the benefits of membership but will operate with a lot of independence with a focus on community service projects. To the extent there is leadership within the CCKC Satellite, it will focus on projects not administration. CCKC members will be free to participate in all functions of the CCKC Satellite.

CCKC Satellite members will have lower dues (even lower if the Kiwanis International waiver of dues for former SLP members remains in place) about $120 per year. They will have to pay the new member (initiation fee) to Kiwanis International (but not to CCKC) about $75. They will be carried by KI on the CCKC roster as members and thus can participate in CCKC events, programs and projects. They will be able to vote but not hold office or serve on the Board without being full members of CCKC.

Emma Huddleston has agreed to serve as the Project Lead for the CCKC Satellite. A CCKC member will always provide the administrative and organizational links between CCKC and the Club Satellite. Others, including Ellen Ann, Sam and Jessica are invited to join Emma in crafting this new model for membership in CCKC.

Miracle LeagueCCKC provided the refreshments for the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association Miracle Athletes playing baseball at the Miracle Field at Messer Park on September 24th. Key Clubbers from Lincoln High and Florida High volunteered on the field and cheered on the athletes. Tasty snacks of homemade cookies and brownies were provided by Carolyn Pardue; bananas and muffins from Fresh Market; and sodas, PowerAde, lemonade, and water came from Coca-Cola.

After leaving the field, Howard & Carolyn then dropped off the remaining bananas and muffins to a grateful Kearney Center, the new 24-hour homeless facility in Tallahassee. Baseball continues each Thursday at 6:00 until November 12th.

Kiwanis Objects The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 International Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the decades, they have remained unchanged.

* To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.* To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.* To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.* To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.* To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.* To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

CCKC is proud to recognize its members’ support of the Kiwanis International & Florida Kiwanis Foundations.
