Imagine you traveled and sang with your entirefamily night after night—a group of siblingssinging songs written by your dad, managedby your mom, following in the footsteps ofparents who left their own legacy in the music

biz. Meet the Crabb Family. The siblings—Jason, Aaron, Adam, Kelly and

Terah—began their career performing as part of theCrabb Family with parents Kathy and Gerald. When the elder Crabbs decided to come off theroad in 2003 (Gerald to concentrate on hissongwriting, Kathy to manage the group andhandle their business affairs), the younger Crabbscontinued the family’s legacy. They’ve added asuccessful new chapter, winning Dove awards andearning Grammy nominations. In fact, at this year’sGMA Music Awards, they scored two Doves forSouthern Gospel Album of the Year and SouthernGospel Recorded Song of the Year (“Through theFire”). Oldest brother Jason has also been singledout for his powerful vocals, having been twice

nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year. While a favorite with gospel music fans for years,

the Crabb Family is intent on breaking down barriersthat seem to exist between Christian AC/Inspo,country and gospel music—three genres that theCrabbs have no trouble tackling. Kathy Crabbappropriately refers to this approach as “cross-pollination.”

And cross-pollination is exactly what the Crabbsare striving for with their new disc, Blur the Lines.Taking covers from various genres of Christianmusic, the Crabb siblings have managed to craft aunique offering that stylistically appeals to themasses. But take one look at the Crabbs, and youknow this isn’t going to be your grandmother’ssouthern gospel! Kathy surmises, “There seems tobe a lack of communication in a lot of the southerngospel world directed toward people under 30,maybe people under 40. [Traditional southerngospel culture is] very stiff with [its] expectationsfor dress code and presentation. And that is not

who we are, and it’s not who we’ve ever been.”Although their sound obviously fits like a glove in thesouthern gospel realm, the “look” of the group ismodern and hip with a flair of color that extends rightinto their music. Covering songs on their new albumfrom AC cornerstones, such as Avalon (“Can’t Live aDay”), Michael English (“Holding Out Hope to You”)and Nicole C. Mullen (“Redeemer,” “Call on Jesus”),and then jumping into gospel and country flavorswith songs recorded by Israel & New Breed (“Friendof God”) and Dottie Rambo (“I Go to the Rock”), theCrabbs are positioning themselves for crossoversuccess in multiple formats. And that is just what theywere going for on Blur.

Oldest twin-brother Adam and his siblings feel thiscollection of songs truly represents what the Crabbfamily ministry is all about. “If you come to a CrabbFamily concert, that’s really what we’re about. Welove to have church and worship God,” he says. “Welove to see people’s lives changed and souls saved. We’ve seen a lot of souls saved the past few months.”

The Crabb Family co-produced the album withveteran Christian producer Bubba Smith, and theystepped out and tried a few different things thistime around. Adam played harmonica, and theyeven recorded one song in Spanish, “Amigo deDios (Friend of God),” with Adam taking lead.Since he doesn’t speak Spanish, an instructor camein to teach him the song phonetically. They plan toperform the song at this year’s Expolit Latin festival.

Such genre-crossing activities are nothing newfor the Crabb Family, which recorded a DoveAward-winning rendition of its hit “Through theFire” with gospel great Donnie McClurkin and hasalso recorded a critically acclaimed project withthe Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Such is the life ofthe Crabb quintet. In fact, Kathy shares a snippetof the family’s busy schedule explaining, “I can giveyou an example of a week that we spent not all thatlong ago. They did a contemporary Christian showwith Steven Curtis [Chapman]; they worked theBrooklyn Tabernacle on Sunday; they worked theGrand Ole Opry the same week and, then, atraditional southern gospel [show].” Talk aboutcross-pollination!

The concept behind blurring the lines hascrossed over into the Crabb’s method of touring aswell. For example, this summer the Crabb Familyembarks on a tour that will be made up of two-dayevents, combining the music and ministries ofartists as diverse as Crossway, the McRaes, theMike Bowling Group, the Katinas, Julian Drive andNewsong. These events are designed to introduce

In 2002, the Christian community welcomed themusic of Matt Maher with his debut disc, The End andthe Beginning. Two albums later, Matt is now one of themost popular and critically acclaimed Catholic artistsin the country. His list of accomplishments andaccolades points to the fact that this categorizationfits like a glove. Matt’s “Litany of the Saints” was sungat World Youth Day 2002, where an average of700,000 pilgrims from around the world (includingthe Holy Father) sang the lyrics in unison. His songshave also been recorded by CCM legend KathyTroccoli.

Furthermore, in 2003, Matt earned the UnityAward for Best New Artist of the Year from theUnited Catholic Music and Video Association. Thefollowing year, Matt was the recipient of yetanother Unity Award, this time for Praise &Worship Song of the Year for “I Love You, Lord.”

His latest project, Overflow, released earlier thisyear and sets the tone for more accomplishmentsthrough ministry. With 12 new tracks plus twobonus songs, Overflow could be Matt’s mostcelebrated release to date.

With all of his success, Matt has no trouble stayinggrounded. You can still find him leading worship eachSunday night at his home parish, St. TimothyCatholic Community, in Tempe, Arizona. For tourdates and more information about Matt, log on tomyspace.com/mattmahermusic.

different types of music to fans of the Crabb Family.By going into markets where both radio formatsexist, Kathy explains, “We believe that we’veblurred the lines; and we’ve brought both worldstogether. And hopefully, at the end of the [event],nobody’s going to know who’s playing on whatstation—that the concerts flow so smoothly thatyou can’t even define where one genre ends and theother begin.”

“This tour has been a five-year dream for us,” Kathyadds, “to literally take the other genres and put themtogether on one stage and do it correctly. I believethat we all would win if we could cross-pollinate ouraudiences. And this is the only way I really know howto do that. We’re gonna give it a whirl!”

Another event that the Crabbs have initiated isCrabb Fest, a 10-year-long tradition held inKentucky each year attracting about 5,000 peopleper night over a span of four days. Kathy says, “It’skind of a buffet of music…something for everyone. It’s the event of events for us. It’s almost like ourfamily reunion kind of thing.”

Whether blurring the lines on their albums, attheir original two-day events or at Crabb Fest 2006,this family is as busy as ever. The ability to spanacross multiple genres is what sets them apart. Withplans to continue the two-day events well into thefuture, it seems the Crabbs are headed in the rightdirection. The concept behind cross-pollinationcould be the wave of the future.

18-year-old Jessie Daniels doesn’t need pressurefrom her peers to make her a cool teenager. Thisgal’s already got it goin’ on with acting credits anda record deal to boot. In fact, her first single, “TheNoise,” spent a mere six weeks at CHR radio beforereaching No. 9. At press time, her single is chartingin the Top 5, poised for a shot at becoming her firstNo. 1. Daniels’ pop/rock flavor is taking Christianradio by storm indeed!

Far from being a new kid on the block as far asthe entertainment industry is concerned, Jessie hasbeen working as an actress since the age of eight. Infact, Daniels has appeared in multiple independentfilms and commercials for both The LifetimeNetwork and MTV. Moreover, she was alsoinvolved in several print ad campaigns and heldroles in musical theater and off-Broadway plays.Growing up in New York gave Daniels primeopportunities to hone her skills as an actress, but asshe grew, she realized that her real love was foundin the form of music. Then, Jessie began torecognize that music was much more than a passionfor her as she grew in her relationship with Christ.

Daniels grew up in a self-described “very loud,Italian Catholic family,” and although she had

grown up in a Christian home and had attendedchurch her entire life, it was not until a friend invitedDaniels to church with her that Jessie discoveredwhat a true relationship with God meant. After thisencounter, Daniels realized that music was more thana love for her—it was a calling.

So, after taking the standard musician’s journey toNashville, Daniels recorded a six-song EP that sheindependently released exclusively through herwebsite. Eventually, her hard work paid off, andDaniels was offered spots at several Radio Disneyevents which ultimately landed her a deal with MidasRecords as the label’s premier faith-based artist.

Today, Daniels eagerly awaits the release of herhighly-anticipated self-titled debut slated to hitshelves June 6. Teaming with producer Scott Davis,Daniels shares writing credits on all 12 of the album’scuts, making this a personal album for Jessie. And thisis exactly the way she intended it. She says, “It’s mygoal for these songs to be ‘me’ in every way possible. It’s so important to me to find my own identity, andI’m getting to do that on this album.”

JESSIEDANIELSREADING MATERIAL: Well, I technicallycan’t read in a car, bus, etc. I get motionsickness, and it’s not pretty. But I guess if Ihad to choose, I would pick a novel or bookinstead of a magazine. Magazines are overtoo fast, and books—you could get wrappedup in the story and time would pass morequickly.

GAMES: I tend to like “UNO” or mini“Connect 4.”

MUSIC: Music is key to me on a trip. Iobviously can sit and sing for hours. If I was incharge of the CD player, there would be MatKearney, Joy Williams, Family Force 5, AshleeSimpson and Carrie Underwood.

SNACKS: I’m a honey wheat pretzel kindagirl. That and vitamin water (preferablythe focus flavor) are what a girl needs inthe car!!

BEBONORMANREADING MATERIAL: A little Freddy B andAnnie D (Frederick Buechner and AnnieDillard), and any good book on tape.

GAMES: A deck of cards will do for anygame I’m into.

MUSIC: Depends on the destination; but Iusually get nostalgic on road trips, so I tendto go for my favorite classics. If I’m headingto the mountains, I have to have thestandards: High Country Snows by DanFogelberg (his one and only bluegrassrecord) and James Taylor’s Greatest Hitsrecord...and you season those up with alittle Alison Krauss, Eastmountainsouth, andNickel Creek. I might even start whistlingsome old John Denver tunes! If I’m headingto the beach, I need August and EverythingAfter by the Counting Crows, maybe a littleJack Johnson, or even some old SherylCrow. Mix all of the above in with anycombination of David Gray, Patty Griffin,Damien Rice, Marc Cohn, Coldplay, and TheWallflowers’ Bringing Down the Horse fromback in ’96, and I’m good to go. Oh yeah, and please never leave out talk radio.

SNACKS: Just a bunch of bottled water andthe occasional RC Cola with a Moonpie.

Podcasting—noun. a web-based broadcast of music whichworks with software that automatically detects new files and isaccessed by subscription.

From the creators of CCM readers’ favorite annualfestival, Creation East, comes an innovative, interactive website hitting the World Wide Web thismonth called MonsterPod. Nick Kulb, who ishelping launch the site along with Harry Thomas,Creation founder, describes MonsterPod as “a sitedeveloped to feature many different types ofcategories of positive, enriching, entertaining and, inmany cases, Christian-based podcasting content.”The content on the site will be offered in variousformats including audio, picture, text and video.

Kulb adds, “The beauty behind MonsterPod isthat all content is designed to be downloaded.” Infact, downloads are available in three differentforms: podcasts, videocasts and RSS feeds.

Content will be available through one of twoways—either through a podcast subscription,

which allows consumers to watch the podcast attheir convenience, or through live content viewedexclusively with the MonsterPod player.

At press time, Walden Media, both CreationFestivals and major labels such as EMI, Tooth &Nail and Gotee are behind the MonsterPod project.Once the website is fully up and running, each labelwill be able to access its own sections of the site toensure that MonsterPod is constantly andconsistently updated.

This month, MonsterPod will disclose its newwebsite featuring artists’ music videos. However, this is only the beginning stage of whatMonsterPod hopes to accomplish. The full-on sitewill continue to grow into the fall when the entiresite will be unveiled featuring all-exclusive content. The information available on the site will be three-fold with podcasting, industry news and missionsupdates (a section focusing on the organizationsthat Creation partners with such as Compassion

International and its ministries in Morroco as wellas last year’s premiere of Friendship Fest), with theintent of expanding into other ministries in thefuture.

In addition, Kulb hopes that MonsterPod will bea place where music videos can be launched andmission-oriented projects can be promoted. In themonths ahead, look for content to include a privateinterview with the owner of Walden Media, anexclusive behind-the-scenes look at The Chronicles ofNarnia and an insider’s glimpse into the newCharlotte’s Web movie as well as exclusive contentfrom bands like Hawk Nelson and Thousand FootKrutch. Plus, be sure to log on for live podcastingfrom the Creation Festivals this summer.
