South Railway – Design for Renewal of Setubal Railway Station
Client Monte Adriano, Engenharia e Construção
Description Alternative design ordered by the contractor in order to simplify the
construction process.
The new underpass replaces the existing one at the same place, and it has
double span from the present one, allowing the enlargement of “Tebaída”
street on the crossing area. The structural/constructive solution adopted
was innovative comparing to the traditional process. Half of the works
were made outside the railway platform. This half underpass was placed
under the railway track by Hydraulic “slide”. The final columns are
concreted.
Afterwards the deck of the other half of the work is made over the existing
underpass. Deck’s longitudinal beams are prestressed. After that it is ”cut”
the frame provisory upstream, in order to minimize the hyper static effects
on the prestress. The existing work is disassembled and demolished. All
these works have been done with only a few interruptions of the train
circulation during the night (5h).
Construction accomplished with success in 4 months.

Road Buraca/Pontinha – Venda Nova Tunnel
Client EP - Estradas de Portugal
Description Road Tunnel inserted in an urban area which allows crossing the complete
CRIL road through a tunnel structure, situated in Venda Nova area, in
Amadora, Portugal.
The tunnel includes 3 roadways in both sides, with a total width of 34.10m.
Longitudinally it presents an extension of 235m.
It must be pointed out its complexity associated to the stage construction.
Being the tunnel’s lateral wall very close to a neighborhood, one was
forced to use “top down” inverted construction method. This proximity to
the existing structures was controlled through the risk analysis of the
nearby buildings by the “Burland” method, as well as with the use of a
proper instrumentation and observation plan intensified during construction
and which is still currently in use (with the structure functioning).
Date 2008 Construction Cost € 111.000.000
