There has been great input so far and its not too late to express your
concerns!Weytk-p! I hope that everyone has had a great summer and would like to wish the child
of our community all the best for the coming school year. It has been one of those uniquyears as far as our weather goes here at Tk'emlps. An extended, wet spring worked its
way well into our traditionally hot and dry summer and, as a result, the rivers have
remained at higher than normal levels (which should be good for the salmon runs) and th
berry crops have been stellar. Those salmon runs are now beginning to pick up andhopefully everyone gets their share. Kukstemc to Barry Bennett in Natural Resources w
has been hard at work with our communal fishery near Savona and getting salmon out to
our membership. It seems as though we have only had a couple of weeks of real summand now, hunting season is right around the corner. Time to jump in to the Sqilye hunt
Several of our members were involved with the Western Canada Summer Games (WCS
at the beginning of August and I find it commendable that the WCSG committee includeTteS at such high levels. Involvement included torch bearers, representation at the open
ceremonies and cultural displays at Riverside Park throughout the week long event.
Powwow weekend was nice and hot and the event was once again a great success. The
Bands new Eagle Staff was put to work for the first time at our annual celebration, after
almost a full year after retiring our previous one. This was a very important cultural eveand it is hoped that this will help us to look forward and envision a productive future for
our community.
The CCP planning team has been hard at work gathering more information regarding
community strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). We invited the
community to our first SWOT workshop at the end of May and, although we had minim
attendance, several issues were brought forward by those who were there. Since then, several sessions have been held within the organization. We have met with each

Celebrate Our RiversSeptember 25th
BC Rivers Day is held every year on the last Sunday of September. This year, celebrate our rivers on September 25th! Organize or
partake in a river clean-up, a BBQ, a nature walk, or take a quiet
moment by yourself to fully comprehend the significance and powerof the water flowing through our land.
Our community is fortunate to be located between the Thompson
Rivers, and to be serviced by a state-of-the-art water treatment plant(managed and maintained by band members Darrell Bennett, Todd
Coles and Mel Paul). This day gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation and acknowledge how lucky w
are. Not all communities are as privileged. As of July 31, 2011, 126 First Nations across Canada were under a
Drinking Water Advisory, thats close to 1 in 5 communities without safe drinking water.
BC Rivers Day was founded by Mark Angelo in 1980 with a volunteer river clean-up beside the Thompson Riv
In 2005, World Rivers Day was established based on the success of BC Rivers Day and is now recognized bymillions of individuals world-wide. For more information visit http://commons.bcit.ca/riversday/ or http://

department and a lot of information has been gathered. We are wrapping up this portion of our project very soand have begun to analyze and sort through the hundreds of responses collected to pinpoint concerns that need
be addressed as we move forward into the future. So far, community related issues such as health and wellness
culture and language, and community safety have been mentioned most frequently. Land related issues such as
planning and development, community infrastructure, sustainability, natural resources and traditional territory next with governance concerns following close behind. Community members are concerned with internal
governance in general, our leadership, and intergovernmental affairs. The last general topic dealt witheconomically based issues such as business development, employment and community economic developmentThere has been great input so far and its not too late to express your concerns! We encourage you to contact
to arrange an informal meeting here at the office, at your home, over the phone or by email. We would like to
hear what everyone has to say so that we can get fair representation and a broad range of opinions as to what ou
future can look like.

SWOT ANALYSIS:
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats
In order for Tkemlps te Secwpemc to move forward with Comprehensive CommunityPlanning (CCP) and for the community to realize a vision for the future, we can use a simple
process to identify internal and external forces that affect our everyday life. By recognizing the
positives and negatives inside and outside of the community, we can develop a full awareness of
our situation to plan effectively and strategically. For this, we will use the SWOT analysis.
SWOT can be broken down as follows:
Strengths Positive tangible or intangible attributes internal to the community that are withinthe communitys control. (Things within the community that are good for the community
now.)
Weaknesses Factors that are within the communitys control (internal) that are negative andcreate inability to function as desired. (Things within the community that are bad for the
community now.)
Opportunities Attractive external factors within the environment that have potential to allowthe community to prosper or advance. (Things that are good for the future.)
Threats External factors beyond the communitys control that can put the community at risk.(Things that are bad for the future.)
We held a session on Strengths and came to the realization that there are many positive forces
and things to be proud of within our community. These can be directly related to the weaknessesyet to be discussed and used to counteract them. Opportunities can also be used in this way to
counteract external threats that are real or perceived. In order for effective planning to proceedand to determine the direction the CCP will lead, we need to flush these topics out thoroughly.
Developing this understanding will also enable us to set goals, establish a vision for the future,
and constitute a solid framework for our completed CCP.
SWOT can apply to all facets (social, cultural, environmental, economic) that make up acommunity. Mixing these parts evenly and creating balance is what can make a community
function holistically, potentially making for a better, healthier way of life for everyone at TteS.For everyone involved, expressing the issues of the day are important, whether they are good, bad
or ugly; we need to collect all of this pertinent information.
By the end of this process, we should be able to get the BIG PICTURE of the most important
factors that influence our survival and prosperity, identify where we are strong and vulnerable, where we should defend and attack, reveal our advantages and disadvantages, and formulate an
action plan.
