Design Thinking Research Awards Design thinking has been described as “devising courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.” Toward that end, the CCTST and Live Well Collaborative (LWC) have joined forces to offer the Design Thinking Research Awards. Established by UC and Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 2007, the non-profit LWC specializes in research and development of products and services for Living Well across the lifespan. It is built around the open innovation model for moving translational research into the community.
Eligibility & Process The principal investigator (PI) must be a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) faculty member. Clusters of investigators spanning disciplines, programs and institutions are strongly encouraged. Faculty based at UC or the Cincinnati VA Medical Center are encouraged to collaborate with CCHMC investigators. CCTST membership is required. A letter of intent (LOI) consisting of an application face page and 2 additional pages is required for each funding round. Selected investigators will be invited to submit a full application. To better understand how design-thinking might address a healthcare challenge, the CCTST and LWC are offering a Design Thinking in Healthcare Workshop (http://cctst.uc.edu/funding/designthinking).
Grants Available This grant opportunity provides partial support for a design-thinking Studio project. You identify a healthcare challenge and the LWC forms a multi-disciplinary design team (UC faculty and students). The team utilizes design thinking tools and a “co-invention” model (e.g. patients) to develop innovative products or services n to address that challenge. The maximum allowable grant is $10,000 in support for a 14-week project which ranges in cost from $29,000-$78,000, depending on the scope of the project, staffing and supplies needed to complete deliverables. The applicant’ should have department/division or grant funds to cover the remaining costs.

• Target Population: All vulnerable postpartum women in Cincinnati.
• Project Aims: To identify and decrease on the amount of women who do not have a safe sleep arrangement after delivery.
• Methods: Community Health Workers (CHW)/Nurses (RN)/Social Workers (SW) will make home visits to postpartum women and provide education on safe sleep and ask moms to identify their safe sleep arrangement and strategies. Moms will complete a brief pre-test on safe sleep, watch a DVR on safe sleep and complete a post-test. The CHW/RN/SW will then provide them with a pack-n-play and schedule a follow up visit to evaluate compliance.
• Evaluation Plan: The evaluation will look at pre-test scores and post-test knowledge scores; track the number without safe sleep arrangements and evaluate compliance at follow up visit.
